Monday, May 31, is Memorial Day and it is a federal holiday when we honor and remember all those who died while in the Armed Forces. This holiday dates back to1868 and was instituted as the day on which flowers were placed on the graves of deceased soldiers. This day was originally called Decoration Day. Approximately one hundred years later, in 1971, Congress declared Memo- rial Day a National Holiday to be celebrated on the last Monday of May. There are several festivi- ties which claim to be the first observance of this holiday, but it was President Lyndon B. Johnson and Congress who named a 1966 celebration in Waterloo, New York, as the Official birthplace of Memorial Day. While Memorial Day is also considered to be the unofficial start of summer, Labor Day has become the unofficial end of summer and the beginning of autumn.

On Sunday, June 20th, we will celebrate Father’s Day when we remember and thank God for our fathers. Each year, the parish has a Father’s Day Novena consisting of nine Masses in which we can enroll our fathers whether they are alive or deceased. In fact, many people also include their brothers, grandfathers and godfathers, uncles and anyone who has shown the love, care and con- cern of a father. The Novena begins on Father’s Day. If you wish to enroll a loved one(s) in the no- vena, please return the enrollment by Father’s Day. If you did not receive an enrollment envelope in the mail, envelopes are available at the doors of the Church. If you wish to present a Father’s Day greeting and enrollment card to someone, these are also available at the doors of the Church.

The Catholic Ministries Appeal (CMA) is underway, and we are gradually making our way towards reaching our goal. Many thanks to all who have already submitted their gifts and/or pledges help- ing to support the various diocesan ministries. If you have not yet given a gift or made a pledge to be paid by December 31, 2021, please consider using the response form printed elsewhere in this bulletin.

During this coming week, you will hopefully receive a letter announcing the 2021 Spring raffle and asking for your support. The raffle is a 50/50 Raffle with the prize amount to be determined by the number of chances sold. The first prize will be 25% of the total received, second prize 15% and the third prize 10%. Chances are $10 each, 6 for $50, 12 for $100 and 24 for $150. The drawing will take place on Monday, June 28th in the rectory office immediately following the 9:00 AM Mass.

Thank you to all parishioners who returned your donations to help raise funds for the Life Center of Long Island.

As previously mentioned, the Parish Spiritual Life Committee would like to thank the nursing staff and related personnel at the three nursing homes we serve by creating some baskets of travel size toiletries as a way of acknowledging and thanking them for the care they brought to the residents over the past year. If you can help, please return the items by Sunday, June 6th. Likewise, if you have some free time and can help write some greeting cards for the residents as summer ap- proaches, cards are available for you to complete at home and return as soon as possible. For some of the residents, the cards and greetings they receive from us are the only greetings that come their way. Thank you for your help.

The staff at our three nursing homes have shown great dedication to the care of the residents meeting the challenges of the past eighteen months with grace, strength and perseverance. According to a recreation director, many of the staff suffer from post traumatic stress syndrome (PTSD). We thought we might recognize and thank the nursing staff for their contribu- tion to the residents, by offering them travel size toiletry supplies. If you would like to collect these travel size items, please place them in the box located in the vestibule by June 7th.

Celebrating Flag Day

As we still cannot visit our three nursing homes, we would like to send each of the Residents a postcard for Flag Day to cheer them up and let them know that we think of them often and pray for them every week. Since the three nursing homes combined have about 700 residents, this endeavor will need many volunteer scribes to write the cards. Each volun- teer will be provided with a page of messages to choose from and cards should have a greeting of Dear Friend (that can be written in the address section). Cards will be provided in packets of 10 and 20 (one with 11). Please pick up the number of packets that you are willing to write; packets of cards are located in the narthex. A box to place your completed cards will be left in the narthex; all cards must be returned by Jun 5th. If you take more cards than you can complete, please return them to the narthex where you had picked them up. Thank you

God of power and mercy, you destroy war and put down earthly pride. Banish violence from our midst and wipe away our tears, that we may all deserve to be called your sons and daughters. Keep in your mercy those men and women who have died in the cause of freedom and bring them safely into your kingdom of justice and peace. We ask this though Jesus our Lord. R/. Amen
