Tropical Birding www.tropicalbirding.com [email protected] +1-409-515-0514 p. 1 Brazil Introtour October 2013 – Trip Report Introduction This was the first time for me guiding in Brazil and happily I had the most amazing time thanks to several reasons: first and foremost, all the participants were such great people that the group turned out to be superb, the synergy generated was difficult to match, laughter, jokes, and teamwork; second, were cooperative and responsive in the vast majority of cases, the same thing with the weather; and third, the places we visit on this tour offer a magnificent environment for birding and for enjoying ourselves while searching this species.

Itinerary:

13-Oct Rio to REGUA and birding the grounds /Night Guapi Assu Lodge 14-15 Oct Birding at REGUA/Night Guapi Assu Lodge 16-Oct Atlantic coast and REGUA/Night Guapi Assu lodge 17 Oct Sumidouro area, drive to Vale das Taquaras/Night Vale das Taquaras 18-Oct Vale das Taquaras/Night Vale das Taquaras Lodge 19 Oct Pico da Caledônia/Night Vale das Taquaras Lodge 20 Oct Vale das Taquaras, return to Rio/Evening departure from Rio

Narrative This tour is run at such an easy pace that it makes the complete experience very enjoyable. We managed to visit varied types of ecosystems and altitudinal belts and yet we only use two very welcoming and comfortable lodges to achieve this.

Lower elevation half The first part, which I call the “lower elevation half” and was based at the lodge within REGUA (Reserva Ecologica Guapi Assu). The lodge and the reserve surrounding are located on the northeast of Rio de Janeiro, just 2 hours away from the metropolis. This reserve has turned into an example of conservation efforts, not only for Brazil, but also for the entire continent due to the great results in terms of reforestation of areas and regeneration of wetlands that now are the most important of the region.

Tropical Birding www.tropicalbirding.com [email protected] +1-409-515-0514 p. 2 Brazil Introtour October 2013 – Trip Report REGUA protects forests from almost sea level to nearly 1400 masl, though we restricted our birding to as high as 500masl by birding different trails on the grounds that the lodge protects and continuously stretches by buying more and more land for conservation.

Highlights found in REGUA include Giant Snipe, Scissor-tailed Nightjar, Sooretama Slaty Antshrike, Masked Duck, Spot-billed Toucanet, Gray- hooded Flycatcher, Black-cheeked Gnateater, Pin-tailed and Blue Manakins, Russet-crowned Crake, Rufous-capped Antthrush, White- bellied, Brazilian, Green-headed, Black-goggled, Azure-shouldered, Golden-chevroned, Flame-crested and Yellow-backed Tanagers, Eye- ringed Tody-Tyrant, Yellow-lored Tody-Flycatcher, Long-billed Wrens, Swallow-tailed Hummingbird, Black Jacobin, White-chinned Sapphire, Southern Antpipit, Yellow-throated and Blond-crested Woodpeckers, Spot-breasted and Plain Antvireos, White-bibbed , White- flanked, Unicoloured and Streak-capped Antwrens, Scaled Antbird, White-shouldered Fire-eye, Sharp-billed Treehunter, Red-crowned Ant-Tanager, Yellow-green and Black- throated Grosbeaks, and a very responsive and beautiful Tawny-browed Owl. One of the best birds here was Red-billed Curassow, which being an endangered species was reintroduced to this area. As recently as a few years ago it was somewhat easy to find, but in the past 3 years it has become much more difficult. We were lucky with this , we actually saw a male on a trail outside the main reserve and a female on the 4x4 trail within the main reserve area. Both sightings were superb and for prolonged periods.

From REGUA we also did a day trip to a coastal area called Praia Seca located just an hour and a half east of Rio de Janeiro. We went there after the very local and endangered Restinga Antwren. We got this bird with ease once we reached the right ecosystem for it. We also saw Hangnest Tody-Tyrant in the same bushes. Other interesting birds we found that morning were Wedge-tailed Grass-Finch, Gray-necked Wood-Rail, Kelp Gull, Brown Booby, Chestnut-backed Antshrike, Royal Tern and a few more.

Tropical Birding www.tropicalbirding.com [email protected] +1-409-515-0514 p. 3 Brazil Introtour October 2013 – Trip Report The day we moved from REGUA towards the other lodge we were going to spend the rest of the trip, Vale das Taquaras, we left really early and looped around to another birding location named Sumidouro. This dry area holds several specific birds that on this itinerary are found only here. The most important one is the very local and again endangered Three-toed Jacamar, which again we found without trouble. We also got many other things that kept us entertained all morning long. Among those the view we got of a Red-legged Seriema were outstanding. Other nice birds include Streamer- tailed Tyrant, Narrow- billed Woodcreeper, Blue- winged Macaw, Sapphire- spangled Emerald, Red- eyed Thornbird, Firewood Gatherer, Curl-crested Jay, Sooty Grassquit, Planalto Hermit, White-rumped Monjita, Gild-edged Tanager, and lots more.

Higher elevation half The second part of the trip it is what I call the “higher elevation half”. The lodge where we based our activities on this portion of the tour is located at 3300ft high and from here we visited some more locations. The lodge is owned by one of the pioneers birders of southeast Brazil, and the lady that created one of the very first bird field guides to this region, Lila Ferrez. It was a pleasure to stay there, being welcomed by a birder who knows all our needs and can share her knowledge and love for birds while having a beer or a wine on the gorgeous porch.

Tropical Birding www.tropicalbirding.com [email protected] +1-409-515-0514 p. 4 Brazil Introtour October 2013 – Trip Report The valley at this extremely beautiful lodge lays on is a quite famous birding site in its own right, the Macaé de Cima area. While birding the forest patches that this lodge protects we found plenty of new birds for us, and plenty of specialties. Among those, highlights were Half-collared Sparrow, Bare-throated Bellbird, Swallow-tailed Cotinga on a nest close to our rooms, Bertoni´s, Ferruginous, Ochre-rumped, and White- bibbed , Tufted Antshrike, White-collared Foliage-Gleaner, Greenish Schiffornis, Rufous Gnateater, Spotted Bamboowren, Rufous-breasted Leaftosser, Gray- hooded Atila, Large-headed Flatbill, Surucua Trogon, Brown Tinamou and plenty more.

The hummingbird feeders are very active around the lodge and always hold Frilled Coquette, Amethyst Woodstar, White-throated and Sombre Hummingbird, Black Jacobin, Brazilian Ruby, Scale-throated Hermit, Versicolored Emerald, and Violet- capped Woodnymph. The dirt road that comes from the highway to the lodge is about 15km long and is surrounded by forest. We walked portions of this well known road and got Plovercrests lekking just on the side of the road, Hooded Berryeater, heard Giant Antshrikes, and found inconspicuous Serra Tyrant-Manakin, Rufous-crowned Greenlet and several more.

One day from this lodge we visited a beautiful area called Pico de Caledonia, one of the only two spots where the rare and very local Gray- winged Cotinga can be seen. This is a high altitude species and it is found only by reaching nearly the top of this mountain, happily accessed by a good but super steep paved road. Once we found the rare cotinga (good views of it) we started looking for other species special to those altitudes and found Itatiaia Spinetail (Thistletail), Velvety and Blue-billed Black-Tyrants, Rufous-backed Antvireo, Mouse-colored Tapaculo, Bay-breasted Warbling-Finch, Diademed and Brassy-breasted Tanagers, Rufous-tailed Antbird, Highland Elaenias, and Green-winged Saltators. A bit lower on the same road we found a nice and responsive Sharp-tailed Streamcreeper and another of the special endemics, a male Black-and- gold Cotinga which together with its close relative (both in the genus Tijuca ) have the most beautiful super high-pitched metallic songs I have heard. We moved lower even and visited a spot were Dusky-tailed Antbirds are regular. Apart from that bird we also

Tropical Birding www.tropicalbirding.com [email protected] +1-409-515-0514 p. 5 Brazil Introtour October 2013 – Trip Report saw the subtly attractive Cinnamon Tanager, White-crested Tyrannulet, and Gray- bellied Spinetail among some others.

The trip ended on Rio’s international airport after 8 days of very enjoyable birding, getting tons of endemics and other specialties, sharing very funny conversations and chats and of course having great fun while doing it.
