  • Check out 8 Songs Musical Artists Have
Search TRAILBLAZERS IN MUSIC: CHECK OUT SONGS MUSICAL ARTISTS HAVE SAMPLED FROM WOMEN OF MOTOWN By Brianna Rhodes Photo: Classic Motown - Advertisement - The Sound Of Young America wouldn’t be known for what it is today without the trailblazing Women of Motown. Throughout its 60-year existence, Motown Records made an impact on the world thanks to music genius and founder, Berry Gordy. It's important to note though, that the African- American owned label wouldn’t have reached so many monumental milestones without The Supremes, Martha Reeves & The Vandellas, Mary Wells, The Marvelettes, Tammi Terrell and Gladys Knight. The success of these talented women proved that women voices needed to be heard through radio airwaves everywhere. As a kid, you were probably singing melodies created by these women around the house with family members or even performing the songs in your school’s talent show, not even realizing how much of an impact these women made on Black culture and Black music. This is why it’s important to acknowledge these women during the celebration of the label’s 60th anniversary. The legendary reign of the Women of Motown began back in 1960, with then 17-year-old musical artist Mary Wells with her debut single, “Bye Bye Baby.” Wells, who wrote the song herself, helped Motown attain its first Top 10 R&B hit ever. Wells continued to make history with her chart-topping single, “My Guy” becoming Motown’s fourth No. 1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 and the company’s first major U.K. single.

  • Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE MARCH 22, 2010 RIVER ROCK CASINO RESORT PRESENTS FRANKIE VALLI & THE FOUR SEASONS FRIDAY, JUNE 25 Richmond, BC – Best known as the front man for the Four Seasons, Frankie Valli scored a total of twenty-nine Top 40 hits with the group and nine Top 40 hits as a solo artist. It was in the summer of 1962 when Valli and the band released the song, “Sherry” which was penned by songwriter, Bob Gaudio in just fifteen minutes. The song moved slowly until the group performed on American Bandstand … the very next day, it sold 200,000 copies catapulting Frankie Valli & the Four Seasons into superstardom. With “Sherry,” they had crystallized a distinctive musical style … the popular doo-wop music of the 50’s inflected with the rhythm & blues influences that would come to define much of the music of the 60’s. With Valli’s amazing falsetto as its trademark, the Four Seasons’ sound would become one of the most enduring in all of rock & roll. Over the next few years, they released numerous hits including “Big Girls Don’t Cry,” “Walk Like a Man,” “Candy Girl” and “Rag Doll.” In 1966, while remaining steadfastly devoted to the Four Seasons, Valli decided to branch out with his own solo album which featured the hit, “(You’re Gonna) Hurt Yourself.” That same year, he and the Four Seasons reached the #3 spot on the pop charts with “Let’s Hang On!” The following year saw Valli’s “Can’t Take My Eyes Off Of You” rise to #2 while “I Make A Fool Of Myself” and “To Give (The Reason I Live)” both became Top 40 hits.

  • Florida Studio Theatre to Hear Frankie Valli Tribute
STUNNING WESTIN L I V I N G E A C H M O M E N T “Who Loves You?” Apparently, lots of people! Sold-out shows at the Florida Studio Theatre to hear Frankie Valli tribute Booking nostalgic music in an area that skews older just makes good business sense. Well done, Florida Studio Theatre: The run of “Who Loves You”--featuring the music of the Four Seasons--was extended to keep up with demand. I love the concept: Have a nice meal, dab your chin and swivel toward the stage while you sip your coffee. Perfect. Or show up in time to just enjoy the show, your call. I’ve heard comedians joke about early start-times in Sarasota (“Bartender, bring me a coffee!”), and when I heard the curtain goes up at 6pm, I had to smirk. (Granted it was the first of two shows of the evening and both were sold out.) Erin and I were seated at a four-top directly in front of the stage, about 15 feet back where we met two nice women in their seventies. ** The Broadway musical, “Jersey Boys,” brought Frankie Valley and the Four Seasons back into the mainstream. I already like them, in fact I saw Frankie himself at the Van Wezel a couple times even before the success of the Broadway show. I was looking forward to this performance at FST. ** The show started strong with songs that gave me the chills: “Let’s Hang On,” “Sherry,” “Big Girls Don’t Cry,” “Walk Like A Man,” “My Eyes Adored You,” and “Rag Doll” began the first set until they veered off into songs by Bobby Darin, Dion and a few others.
