Sri Sathya Sai Seva Organisations Trichy District Annual Report 1st April 2018 to 31st March 2019

This report is dedicated at the Lotus Feet of our Lord and Master Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba

Foreword from the District President

Sri Sathya Sai Seva Organisations run on the divine guidelines of Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba. Its rules emphasizes that members must first practice what they stand for. This is the uniqueness of this Organisation. Only when man becomes better can the world be bettered. Only when the individual becomes good can society be happy. The mind of man has to be reformed.

Sri Sathya Sai Baba has emphasized that proper study of mankind is Man. His principles are based on five concrete pillars i.e Sathya, Dharma, Prema, Shanthi and Ahimsa. He regarded human beings as the supreme creation of God and that the human values are the essence of human being and each one should have opportunity not only to realize this inherent divinity but also the blossoming of human excellence.

Bhagavan’s mission is fulfilled only through His own divine will. He is the one who plans, executes and succeeds at everything. The binding force of all the activities performed is pure Love which is based on the dictum and powerful mantra of Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba – “Love All, Serve All”. He is the divine power that expresses itself through each of us. It is His divine energy and guidance that plays out as each of us trying to perform our duty as an offering to Him.

SRI SATHYA SAI SEVA ORGANISATIONS – AN INTRODUCTION

The Sri Sathya Sai Seva Organisations, founded by Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba in the year 1965, is a service organisation with a spiritual core and base to benefit all mankind irrespective of religion, caste, creed or sect. The Organisation serves as a platform for its members to undertake service and other activities motivated by an urge for one's own transformation with the aim of realising one's inherent divinity. Without any distinction of religion, nationality, race, socio- economic status, either for those who work in the Organisation or for those who are served by it, the Organisation transcends all barriers leading humanity towards the ideal of 'Fatherhood of God and Brotherhood of Man'. The concept of fees or membership subscription is alien to the Sri Sathya Sai Seva Organisations, for there cannot be any fee or subscription for one's journey towards his own self. The organisation functions through its primary units called as Samithis and Bhajan Mandalis of which individuals - from different strata of society, different ethnic groups pursuing different religions and faiths -are members bound by the dictum of “Love all, Serve All” and pursue their own sadhana towards self- transformation following the path of selfless service to humanity. At no point is an individual asked to follow a certain religion or rituals. On the contrary each is inspired to follow his own faith so as to ensure that a Hindi becomes a better Hindu, a Muslim becomes a better Muslim, a Christian becomes a better Christian and so on. In fact, this spiritual basis inspires everyone to pursue his own religion better by putting into practice Love and Selflessness. That is why the Organisation features in its emblem the symbols of the major religions of the world.

The Organisations named after Me are not to be used for publicizing My Name, or creating a new cult around My worship….They must render Seva (service) to the helpless, the sick, the distressed, the illiterate and the needy. Their seva (selfless service) should not be exhibitionistic; it must seek no reward, not even gratitude or thanks from the recipients. Seva is sadhana (spiritual exercise), not a pastime of the rich and well placed. You must have the firm belief that the aim of this Organisation is to remove the obstacles that keep man away from God, that separate maanavathwa (Humanity) from Maadhavathwa (Divinity).. This Organisation must elevate the human into the Divine.” Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba

SRI SATHYA SAI SEVA ORGANISATION - TRICHY

BRIEF HISTORY

Sri Sathya Sai Seva Organisation, Trichy was initially started in Tamil Sangam Building, Main Guard Gate in the name of “Sri Sathya Sai Baktha Sabha” in the year 1962. The first president was Sri. Nataraja Iyer and the Secretary was Sri. Govindarajan. Initially a Bhajana Mandali was started at headed by Clarinet Vidwan, Sri. A.K.C Natarajan. The Tiruvanaikoil Bhajana Mandali was headed by Sri. Thatha Pillai and Sri.Thangavelu Pillai. The Bhajana Mandali was headed by Sri. T.P.Kailasam and Parthasarathy. The Golden Rock Bhajana Mandali was headed by Sri. T.V. Bakthavathsalam and Sri Venkataraman. Later on many Bhajana Mandalis were started all around Trichy District which went upto 24 during Swami’s visit to Trichy in the year 1966. During this year, Sri Sathya Sai Baktha Sabha was changed to Sri Sathya Sai Seva Organisation, Trichy.

Sri. Manikka Vasagam Pillai, the then President of Tamil Sangam, Trichy who himself a Sai devotee, was instrumental in permitting Sai Bhajans to function regularly at Tamil Sangam Premises. Dr. V.K. Ranganathan, the then Chairman of Trichy Corporation, himself a Sai devotee was a great patron for all our organisation activities. In those days around 200 to 300 devotees used to attend regular bhajans.

Sri. Nataraja Iyer, the then President of SSSSO along with his son Sri. Gopal travelled all round the year conducting daily bhajans and Sathsung at various places in Trichy. They both play Haribol and Ganjira and were the pioneers who were instrumental in bringing many Bhajana Mandali’s and many devotees to Sai fold. Swami visited Trichy during the years 1948, 1964,1965,1966 and 1984. During his visit to Sri Renganatha Chettiar’s house in 1948, Swami was led in procession on elephants back in Big Bazaar Street. Each and every Sai Devotee of Trichy had their own experience to say about Swami, who had done many miracles in their lifetime. During the Year 1992, the Trichy devotees planned to construct a permanent building for SSSSO, Trichy. Sri. Ramalingam, who was running a primary school at Aruna nagar, , came forward to give his school ground free of cost to build Swami’s Building. He has also contributed many Building materials for the construction.

During the year 1993, Swami blessed the Foundation Stone at Brindhavan, Whitefield and the New Building named “SRI SATHYA SAI SPIRITUAL CENTRE” at Aruna Nagar, Srirangam was inaugurated on 22-09-1993 by the then State President, Maj Gen Mahadevan. Separate room for Swami was constructed in the first floor, for Swami to stay during his visit to Trichy. From this day onwards, this centre was projected as the Headquarters of SSSSO, Trichy.

DIVINE VISIT

1. In 1948:

Swami visited (Late) Ranganatha Chettiar’s house in Big bazaar street, Trichy, an account of which has been published in Sathyam Sivam Sundaram. (Part-1, Page- 68)

2. In 1964 February:

On the occasion of Gruhapravesam of Sri.A.K.C.Natarajan, clarinet vidwan, Swami arrived along with Sri.Kasturi, alighted at Traveller’s Bungalow at Mukkombu Anaicut. Previously, A.K.C had announced that Swami will be coming only at 10.30 p.m so that the crowd will be dispersed a little. But the crowd waited patiently to have a glimpse of Swami even in that late night. A.K.C. received Swami at the bungalow and brought Him by car to his residence.

Swami came to the residence exactly at 10.30 p.m. when Sri Embar Vijayaragavachariar was performing Kadhakalakshepam. Swami was escorted safely inside with difficulty due to the huge unmanageable crowd. It was partially due to the advertisement in Daily Thanthi, a Tamil newspaper, that Baba is coming to Trichy and a civic reception to be held by Tiruchi Municipality. Swami rebuked A.K.C.Natarajan for having invited such a crowd. Thereafter, Swami instructed to conduct Sai bhajans and announce that He will give darshan to the waiting devotees. Accordingly, Swami came out and gave darshan and announced that He will be staying for 3 or 4 days and devotees will be given darshan in the morning & evening. In the mean while, the Chairman of the Tiruchi Municipality with a group of councilors waited to invite Swami for the civic reception to be given to Him. Swami told that this had not been obtained prior approval and He had no objection to receive the same in the pandal itself since, the Municipal hall will not suffice the entire crowd. In the council meeting held afterwards, it was approved and the civic reception was given. On 3rd February, Swami addressed the gathering at the pandal. (Sathya Sai Speaks Vol.III-Pg.150-154).

Photo Taken in 1965 In 1965:

On behalf of Bhajan mandalis functioning at Trichy, delegates under the leadership of Sri.A.K.C. Natarajan went to Prashanthi Nilayam to invite Swami to Trichy. Swami blessed them with an interview and instructed them to start a samithi similar to the one started at Bombay. Swami inaugurated the Samithi in the interview room itself on their prayerful request. Swami elaborated on the objectives of a registered Samithi in promoting spiritual values. Later, they went to Parthi after the samithi was formed and requested Swami to give suitable dates for His Trichy visit. Swami gave them dates tentatively but the visit was postponed due to Hindi agitations. Finally, Swami came along with Sri.Raja Reddy and Maharaja of Sandur. A huge pandal was erected at K.A.P.Viswanathan High School grounds. Ramayana was depicted as paper cuttings and huge cut-outs of Swami were placed. Swami appreciated the arrangements and was very happy with the works of the artist Ramnath and blessed him. Swami was even willing to take the cut-outs to Parthi. On the invitation of Sri S.N.K.Sundaram, Director, Pandyan Bank, Madurai, Swami visited Budalur and inaugurated a Shiva shrine. Swami left Trichy the next day by car.

3. In 1966, December

Swami came along with Sri Kasthuri to inaugurate Prasanthi Vidwan Mahasabha on 16th December, 1966 . Swami gave darshan at specially erected pandal in the K.A.P.Viswanatham High school grounds. Vedhaparayanam by 32 vedic pundits went on both morning & evening. Swami sat along with Vedic pundits and enquired their welfare and instructed to open a Veda patashala for which He promised to provide monetory help. About 1 lakh people were assembled there. Dr.V.K.Renganathan, Vice-Chairman, Trichy Municipality gave the welcome address. The honorable speakers were Sri Arumuganavalar from Ceylon and Sri.K.V.Jagannathan, Editor Kalaimahal Tamil journal. Swami gave His Divine discourse on a special platform which was translated by Prof.C.S.Kamalapathi to Tamil. (Sri Sathya Sai Speaks, Vol .6, page 215 to 218). The professor was a devotee of Shirdi Sai Baba and did not believe Swami and felt that He should prove His Divinity. But Swami Himself gave the Professor’s residential address and beaconed him to translate. Then the professor became an ardent devotee of Bhagawan. A commemorative pamphlet edited by Sri.Kasturi was distributed on that occasion. During this visit, Swami stayed at Sri.A.K.C.Natarajan’s house for 5 days. Swami posed for group photographs with gents and mahila sevadals separately. This was eventful visit of Swami to Tiruchi, when 24 bhajan mandalis were functioning.

4. In 1984 (12th January)

The next visit of Bhagawan was in 1984, when He came along with the State President Maj.Gen. S.P.Mahadevan from Chennai by plane and was received by former State-Coordinator K.Govindarajalu at the specially erected pandal at the Railway parade grounds, , Kallukuzhi, Junction. He also blessed Dr.V.K.Ranganathan at the dais. At that time Swami opened a small exhibition arranged by BHEL samithi headed by Sri.A.G. Chandrasekaran. Sarees were given to blind school inmates. Bhajan was conducted and Swami gave darshan to devotees gathered there. Then, Swami went by car to Madurai.
