9 MEDICAL INFORMATION

Medical care in the United States can be quite expensive. The following information will help you manage your insurance and personal expenses for medical care. The American Health Care System can be very confusing and complex. Listed below is information that will get you started. All information has been checked for accuracy. But it is always a good idea to go to the listed website to be sure that the information such as hours that they are open and location has not changed. Some of the websites also have the services they provide listed which can be helpful in deciding where to go.

Here is some general information that is important to remember as you seek health care.

1. Before seeking medical treatment at any given facility, ask if they are “in network” with the insurance you have. Many times they may say they will accept your insurance, but if they are “in network” you will get the best price and pay the least amount out of your own resources.

2. If your child/children have Medicaid, be sure to ask if the medical facility accepts Medicaid before you seek treatment. Not all health institutions accept Medicaid.

3. If you have uncertainty about any insurance or medical issues, be sure to ask questions. It will not be considered impolite to ask for further explanation.

4. If you are not certain whether to pursue an appointment with a doctor listed on pages 12-13, you may first call one of these nurse help lines on page 11. They may be able to help advise you.

5. It is always the most cost effective and helpful if you begin with your Primary Care Physician or with Olin Health Center. A Primary Care Physician is a doctor who provides the basic medical needs for most issues and the doctor you first attempt to see. http://www.olin.com For Olin Health Center, contact: www.olin.msu.edu

10 6. Going to the Emergency Room at a hospital is always the most expensive way to receive medical attention. Use the Emergency Room only for health issues that are very serious and cannot wait until you make an appointment with a doctor. There are urgent care centers that you may go to for issues after the regular office hours of doctors. These will be more expensive than your Primary Care Doctor, but less expensive than an emergency room at the hospital.

7. It can be helpful to become familiar with your insurance and with a doctor before a serious illness arises.

8. There are many more health services available than listed below. We are giving you the ones that we know about or think are good ones to begin with. You may find additional information from friends or online.

If you have MSU Insurance: MSU 24-Hour Nurse Phone Information Line Need medical advice about whether you should go to the ER (Emergency Room), or have questions about your general health or a specific condition, this 24-hour nurse line can help. www.olin.msu.edu/services/pin.htm 517-353-5557
