INDIAN INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY (INDIAN SCHOOL OF MINES) DHANBAD X L C O N V O C A T I O N Report of the Director Indian Institute of Technology (Indian School of Mines), Dhanbad was established in 1926 to address the need for trained manpower related to mining activities in the country with disciplines of Mining Engineering and Applied Geology. In 1967, it was granted the status of a Deemed to be University under Section 3 of UGC Act, 1956. Over the last nine decades, ISM has incorporated important core engineering disciplines and has acquired the status of full- fledged institute of global standing for imparting higher education in engineering, science and management. The Institute has been conferred the status of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) on 6th September 2016 by Government of India and has now been renamed as Indian Institute of Technology (Indian School of Mines), Dhanbad. The present report encapsulates academic, research and related activities of the Institute for the period 1st April 2018 to 31st March 2019. During this period, there have been substantial developments in all fronts such as student strength, number of research scholars, infrastructure development, research publications, external cash flow from projects sponsored by industries and national funding agencies. The campus placement continued to remain high with increase in the highest and the average pay packages. Further, the Institute was involved in several executive training programmes and industry sponsored projects from across the country and overseas organizations in bridging the gap between industry and academia. 1. AWARD OF DEGREES The degrees shall be conferred for the year 2018-19 on 1,988 students which includes 107 Ph.D., 669 M. Tech (Two year), 48 M.Tech. (Three year), 36 MBA, 13 Executive MBA, 103 M. Sc. Tech, 128 M.Sc., 62 Integrated M.Sc. Tech/ Integrated M. Tech, 45 Dual Degree and 777 B. Tech. 2. ACADEMICS Academic Programmes and Student Strength In the Academic year 2018-19, IIT (ISM) offered 65 programmes at UG and PG levels, apart from offering part time and full time Ph.D. in each department. The total student strength in 2018-19 has gone up to 8,354. Campus Placement The institute has maintained a sustained percentage of placement (approximately 70%), though the number of graduating students has increased significantly over the years. 3. RESEARCH AND INDUSTRY-INSTITUTE COLLABORATION Some more Major experimental facilities have been added under the Central Research Facility 1 X L C O N V O C A T I O N (CRF) and various other laboratories of all departments of the Institute in order to enhance the academic and research potential of students and faculty members. Research Publication in SCOPUS & Web of Science, USA Database One of the major outcomes of research and key parameter to project Institute's research activities is publications by faculty members in reputed journals that are globally acknowledged for Institute rankings. In the year 2018, total publications of the Institute in Web of Science, USA (SCIE/SSCI journals) database was 962 & similarily, 1741 publications were recorded in SCOPUS database. Sponsored Research/Industry Sponsored Projects The Institute continued its growth in R&D sanctioned projects and executed projects worth Rs. 2,810.39 Lakhs during the year 2018-19. In the year 2018-19, thirty eight organizations comprising government, public and private sectors have sponsored more than 180 sponsored R&D and Industrial projects. Consultancy Projects The Institute executed consultancy projects worth Rs. 2282.58 Lakhs during the year 2018- 19 sponsored by more than sixty six client organizations of high repute. Executive Development Programmes IIT (ISM) has been contributing to the up-gradation of knowledge and expertise of executives of different companies by offering executive development programmes in its core areas of competence. During the year 2018-19, a total of thirty Seven (37) Professional Development Programmes have been conducted for executives of various sectors viz. Government, Public and Private Companies with revenue generation of Rs. 797.55 lakhs. 4. INTERNATIONAL COLLABORATIONS International Student/Faculty Exchange Projects During this period, Academic and Research Collaborations were established with following foreign universities: Politecnico di Milano, Milan, Italy Instituto Superior Tecnico, Lisbon, Portugal University of Slovakia, Slovakia Membership of Indo-European Heritage Network: IIT (ISM), Dhanbad became the member of the prestigious Indo-European Heritage Network of 19 leading Technical Higher Education Institutions, who are jointly engaged in collaborations through their research and academic activities. 2 X L C O N V O C A T I O N 5. IIT (ISM) ALUMNI AFFAIRS ISMAANA Awards for the year 2018-19 were finalized for twelve (12) meritorious students in the disciplines of Mining Engineering, Petroleum Engineering, Applied Geology and Applied Geophysics. These awards were instituted by ISM Alumni Association of North America Chapter. Each student is awarded with a merit certificate and a cash prize of Rs.41, 000/-. Inder Mohan Thapar Resarch Award has been finalized with six (06) research awards and conferred to the students of UG and PG programmes and Research scholars in Mining Engineering, Petroleum Engineering, Environmental Science, Fuel & Mineral Engineering, Applied Physics and Humanities and Social Sciences branches. ISMAA and IIT(ISM) Dhanbad jointly organized Industry Institute Interaction 2019 on the topic “Role of Academia towards Innovation, Incubation and Entrepreneurship” on February 02, 2019. The event was well-attended by hundreds of renowned Industrialists, Executives, Faculty Members, Students and Alumni of the Institute. A total of 333 participants (internal and external) registered for III – 2019. A panel discussion on “Synergising the Industry Academia Partnership for Furthering Excellence” was also organized in this event. Alumni Reunion BASANT-2019, was organized on February 03, 2019. Golden Jubilee Batch of 1969 participated as special guests during the event. The event received all the praise from the golden jubilee batch. General Body meeting of IIT (ISM) Alumni Association was also held during the event. Basant Samman and distinguished alumnus awards were conferred on the distinguished alumni who achieved milestones in their respective fields. Alumni Connect programs: IRAA office connected with alumni of Bay area USA (San Francisco) through a video conferencing event in January 2019 Annual alumni meet event of Middle East Alumni Association was held on Feb, 2019 in Dubai. The Director and Dean (IRAA) participated in this event. ISMAA Mumbai Chapter organized annual get-together on 20th Jan at Mumbai. ISMAA Kolkata organized MINI BASANT 2019 on 27th January, 2019 at Kolkata. ISMAA Delhi Chapter organized its annual get-together on February 10, 2019. ISM Alumni Association – Bilaspur Chapter organized its annual re-union on 7th April, 2019 at Bilaspur. The Bengaluru Chapter of ISMAA has been formed. 3 X L C O N V O C A T I O N 6. STUDENTS' ACTIVITIES Students were involved in organizing various academic and extracurricular activities in association with International Societies viz. Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE), Society for Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration (SME), Society for American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG), Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), Society of Exploration Geophysicists (SEG), Society for European Association of Geoscientists and Engineers (EAGE), Optical Society of America (OSA), International Society of Optics & Photonics (SPIE), Society of Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) and American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). The institute organized various co-curricular activities such as NCC, NSS, NSO, Yoga, etc. The students are involved in organization of Technical, Cultural and Sports events, viz. Srijan, Concetto, Parakram, Annual Sports, etc. Students were encouraged to manage their campus affairs through various Students' Societies in a democratic manner. 7. AWARDS AND RECOGNITIONS Twenty Three (23) nos. of instituted awards and recognitions were achieved by faculty members and students at IIT (ISM), Dhanbad during 2018-19 sponsored by different reputed Organisations/ Industries. 8. DEVELOPMENT OF MAJOR INFRASTRUCTURE The Institute witnessed major infrastructural growth during the period as listed below: Central Library (G+7) building (having an area of 21,260 sq m) was taken over by the institute from CPWD and the same was made fully functional and accessible to the students, research scholars and faculty members. The Central library is centrally air-conditioned with all state of the art facilities to fulfill all academic and research requirements. Rosaline girls hostel (with 600 rooms and having 1000 seater capacity) was taken over by the institute from CPWD for coping up with the increasing strength of girls students in the IIT(ISM) campus. Boys Hostel (G+10) with 1000 Rooms (2000 seat) is under construction stage for taking care of the increasing strength of the students at IIT(ISM) campus. Faculty quarters (120 Type V and 60 Type VI) (G+15) are under construction for catering to the increasing faculty strength at IIT(ISM) Dhanbad. Central Research Facility Building (G+7) is under construction for housing the most advanced and state of the art instruments and research equipment for aiding the academic
