Contact Us VILLA ARCADIA

Villa Arcadia is a beautifully-restored Randlord’s mansion which was designed and built by Sir Herbert Baker just after the turn of the last century. Hollard has had the pleasure and honour of restoring the villa, which has been granted Heritage Site status. The landmark building is used extensively by Hollard and its partners to host events and meetings, and also houses a significant collection of contemporary South African art.

THE HOLLARD BRAND

The Hollard brand is the third most recognised insurance brand in South Africa according to Bateleur Khanya’s “Insurance Brand Equity Tracking Survey” (December 2011). The Hollard brand promise – We Get You – is our way of saying we understand the aspirations and needs of our brokers and policyholders. And, because we’re independent, we’re able to respond to those needs quickly and creatively.

On Being Independent

A PIONEERING INSURER

• Hollard was the first “purpose-built” rent-a-captive company in South Africa

• In 1981 we were responsible for setting up the first offshore rent-a-captive for a leading South African corporate

• In the same year, we pioneered the concept of being the nominated repairer to a nationwide group (Imperial Motors) – the first serious attempt to control repair costs by fixing margins

• In 1983 we became the first insurer to utilise capitalised preference share structures – which later became the classic cell captive structure – in the local market

• In 1988 we launched the first credit shortfall / extended cover product in South Africa: WesBank Coverplus

• In 1991 we launched LegalWise, South Africa’s first legal expenses insurance product

• In 1992 PetSure was formed – South Africa’s first pet medical aid for man’s best friend (and other four- legged creatures that share our homes)

• In 1995 we formed Zimisele, the first black-owned underwriting management agency (UMA) in the country

• In 1997 Hollard launched the first fully fledged direct sales life insurance operation in South Africa

• In 2000 we became the first South African insurance company to form a joint venture with a soccer brand when we teamed up with Kaizer Chiefs

• In the same year, we developed the first impaired lives product range in South Africa together with Altrisk, including a new generation of life cover for people living with HIV/AIDS

• In 2001 Hollard formed a joint venture with the Edcon group, the first time a retailer had entered the insurance environment on a significant scale

• We also became the first company to sell an insurance policy from the top of Mount Kilimanjaro

• In 2005 we launched Pay As You Drive, the first motor insurance policy to base premiums on actual kilometres travelled

• In 2006, in partnership with the Pepkor group, we introduced the first range of over-the-counter insurance products

HOW IT ALL BEGAN

When Hollard was born, times were very different from what they are today. Partnership, risk appetite, independent thought and “the long-term” were not generally accepted business concepts. And yet Hollard grabbed on to these notions with vigour, flying in the face of the grey suit brigade and adding a bit of colour to the local insurance industry. We sought smart solutions to ensure everyone came out a winner... and we’ve not stopped – setting trends, breaking conventions and revolutionising several sectors of the insurance industry.

GOING INTERNATIONAL

Afro-global: a term used to define Hollard’s approach to doing business outside the borders of South Africa. We think global, but our roots remain firmly planted right here at home. This is where our ideas develop; this is where our partnership philosophy was born; and this is where we constantly look for strategic guidance.

The strength and diversity of our business model has allowed it to be tweaked and adapted to suit local conditions in countries across the world – from Africa to Asia and from the UK to the Pacific Rim. But at its heart Hollard remains proudly and positively South African and we will continue to “look local” for global direction.

Financial and economic inclusion

One of our key focus areas is developing new ways of “doing insurance” that bring the right products to the right people at a price they can afford allowing everyone to participate in the financial services industry.

Enterprise development

Hollard actively helps to develop and sustain new enterprises, specifically in the motor repair industry.

Helping disadvantaged communities

Through the Hollard Foundation we assist in enabling vulnerable, disadvantaged children to realise their potential by providing access to care and education.

Youth development

Hollard actively participates in Harambee, a programme that facilitates the sourcing of employment opportunities for systemically unemployed young South Africans.

Skills development

Through the Hollard Academy we are 100% committed to building the talents and knowledge of all Hollardites and our broker partners. We spend on average 4.2% of our annual payroll on training and development. In addition, we are committed to reducing the skills shortage in the insurance industry and consistently achieve full points on our DTI scorecard for learnerships.
