Hollard has had the pleasure and honour of restoring the villa, which has been granted Heritage Site status. The landmark building is used extensively by Hollard and its partners to host events and meetings, and also houses a significant collection of contemporary South African art. Legacy Built on a solid base, our wealth products offer long-term stability and security Villa Arcadia ABOUT THE HOLLARD GROUP Hollard has been around since 1980, providing pioneering insurance and risk solutions to South Africa (the old and the new) and countries abroad through innovative problem solving and rock-solid partnerships. Today, having survived 80’s hair, the millennium bug and the global economic crisis, Hollard is South Africa’s largest independent and privately-owned insurance group, and the third largest short-term insurer in South Africa. But that’s not all... Hollard is also a significant player in the life assurance arena, which means we’re able to combine the best of both worlds and provide cover to suit every insurance need, all under one roof. Our entrepreneurial approach to doing business, coupled with a love of working with like-minded people, has led to the formation of many collaborative partnerships with underwriters, brokers, retailers, affinity groups and other specialist individuals and organisations. Through these partnerships we’ve made many close friends and developed brand new ways of doing things. WHAT WE STAND FOR As a leading insurance brand, we know that if we want to make a difference, we need to do things differently. We need to be flexible, innovative, ahead of the curve and committed to world-class service. Big-impact, smart ideas get us up in the morning, and our entrepreneurial spirit, passion, commitment to innovation and desire to make a real difference keep us going. Because we believe in “relationships above all else”, we have access to a vast and diverse pool of creative and business minds. Security From humble beginnings we have forged ahead to become your gateway to a better future About The Hollard Group Uniqueness We offer matchless benefits that last a lifetime ON BEING INDEPENDENT Our independence as a family-owned, unlisted company is an enormous advantage. We are able to forge ahead in our own direction and adopt a long-term view, instead of chasing the pack or looking for quick returns. This allows us to attract the sort of partners with whom we want to do business, and to develop innovative products. Independence allows us to invest in our future by making sustainable choices for our partners’ businesses, as well as our mutual long-term success. THE HOLLARD BRAND The Hollard brand is the third most recognised insurance brand in South Africa according to Bateleur Khanya’s “Insurance Brand Equity Tracking Survey” (December 2011). The Hollard brand promise – We Get You – is our way of saying we understand the aspirations and needs of our brokers and policyholders. And, because we’re independent, we’re able to respond to those needs quickly and creatively. On Being Independent A PIONEERING INSURER • Hollard was the first “purpose-built” rent-a-captive company in South Africa • In 1981 we were responsible for setting up the first offshore rent-a-captive for a leading South African corporate • In the same year, we pioneered the concept of being the nominated repairer to a nationwide group (Imperial Motors) – the first serious attempt to control repair costs by fixing margins • In 1983 we became the first insurer to utilise capitalised preference share structures – which later became the classic cell captive structure – in the local market • In 1988 we launched the first credit shortfall / extended cover product in South Africa: WesBank Coverplus • In 1991 we launched LegalWise, South Africa’s first legal expenses insurance product • In 1992 PetSure was formed – South Africa’s first pet medical aid for man’s best friend (and other four- legged creatures that share our homes) • In 1995 we formed Zimisele, the first black-owned underwriting management agency (UMA) in the country • In 1997 Hollard launched the first fully fledged direct sales life insurance operation in South Africa • In 2000 we became the first South African insurance company to form a joint venture with a soccer brand when we teamed up with Kaizer Chiefs • In the same year, we developed the first impaired lives product range in South Africa together with Altrisk, including a new generation of life cover for people living with HIV/AIDS • In 2001 Hollard formed a joint venture with the Edcon group, the first time a retailer had entered the insurance environment on a significant scale • We also became the first company to sell an insurance policy from the top of Mount Kilimanjaro • In 2005 we launched Pay As You Drive, the first motor insurance policy to base premiums on actual kilometres travelled • In 2006, in partnership with the Pepkor group, we introduced the first range of over-the-counter insurance products • In 2006 the first tyre insurance in South Africa was launched with Tiger Wheel and Tyre • In 2007 Hollard became the first South African insurance company to have a Wikipedia page Expertise Our specialist team is committed to carving a great future for you, with care and precision A Pioneering Insurer Looking Ahead Constantly looking ahead of the times, we move across the globe but never forget our roots back home HOW IT ALL BEGAN When Hollard was born, times were very different from what they are today. Partnership, risk appetite, independent thought and “the long-term” were not generally accepted business concepts. And yet Hollard grabbed on to these notions with vigour, flying in the face of the grey suit brigade and adding a bit of colour to the local insurance industry. We sought smart solutions to ensure everyone came out a winner... and we’ve not stopped – setting trends, breaking conventions and revolutionising several sectors of the insurance industry. GOING INTERNATIONAL Afro-global: a term used to define Hollard’s approach to doing business outside the borders of South Africa. We think global, but our roots remain firmly planted right here at home. This is where our ideas develop; this is where our partnership philosophy was born; and this is where we constantly look for strategic guidance. The strength and diversity of our business model has allowed it to be tweaked and adapted to suit local conditions in countries across the world – from Africa to Asia and from the UK to the Pacific Rim. But at its heart Hollard remains proudly and positively South African and we will continue to “look local” for global direction. How I t All Began DOING WELL BY DOING GOOD At Hollard, we consider far more than the numbers in all our dealings. Naturally there have to be financial BalanceTo make everyone a winner we place equal considerations, but we also focus on making a positive impact in the social, human and environmental importance on financial returns, and on making realms.

Since then we have worked with our partners to define and continuously nurture our vision for employee benefits across the continent.

Mapping the Micro-Lending Landscape for Lumkani Protection Mapping the Micro-Lending Landscape for Lumkani Protection An Interactive Qualifying Project submitted to the Faculty of WORCESTER POLYTECHNIC INSTITUTE in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Bachelor of Science By: Kevin Guth T. Sam Lynn Riley McManus Paul Roberts Date: 9 December 2016 Cape Town Project Center Report Submitted to: Emily Vining and Paul Mesarcik Lumkani Professors Nicola Bulled and Alexandria Agloro Worcester Polytechnic Institute This report represents work of WPI undergraduate students submitted to the faculty as evidence of a degree requirement. WPI routinely publishes these reports on its web site without editorial or peer review. For more information about the projects program at WPI, see http://www.wpi.edu/Academics/Projects. Abstract and Executive Summary Abstract Growth of low-income housing around the world has resulted in overcrowded informal settlements at high risk of fire. The social enterprise, Lumkani, has developed a networked heat detector that alerts community members in the event of a fire. In an effort to expand distribution, Lumkani has partnered with Hollard Group Insurance and is seeking partnerships with micro-lending organizations globally. This project assessed the micro-lending landscape and developed an estimated monetary value model to quantify the expense of fire related defaults to lenders to identify viable partner organizations. We concluded that non-government organizations are the most viable global partners, while housing lenders servicing residents in high-risk communities are the most promising domestic partners. Executive Summary In 2007, one billion people lived in areas referred to as informal settlements or slums; this number is expected to reach 1.4 billion by 2020 (Lumkani Indiegogo, 2015).
