Many events in the articles have been meeting: funded through a grant from the Community Committee. 10 November 6pm Worsley Road North Methodist Commemoration of World War 1 Event The Commemoration was organised in response to a piece of intergenerational work developed through the Health Task Group. It was held at Brierley House Day Centre on the 14 August 2014. The theme was to remember those who gave their lives during the conflict. Local knitters provided us with knitted poppies and young people from Salford Community Leisure, made bracelets and broaches from loom bands. They also presented a very moving interpretation, through art and drama, of young soldiers’ experiences of the War. A brilliant display of photographs and stories of the armed forces from the area was loaned from Lauren Thomas Sullivan. A local Artist Stephen Critchley, also provided a display of his artwork. The event was attended by The Right Worshipful Ceremonial Mayor of Salford and her Consort. Tesco provided the attendees with a cream tea. The event was hugely successful due to the partnership approach from all agencies involved. Did you know over 500 people in Salford die each year as a result of smoking? Make that first step to quitting today. - 2 - Cycle and pedestrian route improvement works to the Loop Line The Roe Green Loop Line between Monton Green and Bolton is a 7.2km traffic free cycle and pedestrian route along the former Tyldesley and Roe Green rail line. The route forms part of the National Cycle Network (NCN) route 55 that links Manchester and Bolton via Salford. The route is well used by pedestrians and cyclists and is a strategic route within Salford’s cycle network, linking the surrounding residential areas to employment and education sites. The Salford stretch between Clegg Lane, Little Hulton down to Monton Green has already benefitted from improvement works, and this investment in cycle routes will continue with the next phase of planned works. Phase 6 and 7 improvements, of approximately 2.4km, will begin at Worsley Station (the original railway station) in Worsley, passing under the motorway bridge towards Roe Green and under the East Lancs Road to Mesnelea Primary School. This 600k project will link the existing improvements from Tynesbank through to Monton Green and will include re-surfacing works, the construction of access paths and steps, as well as the installation of benches along the route. Please find below map indicating the extent of the currently proposed works: - 3 - Improvement works to the Loop Line …. The saying ’when coal was king’ certainly was true of Walkden and Worsley. We look back and celebrate our industrial history with three talks, illustrated by slides, and presented by experts in their field. Friday 24 October 2.00pm The Story of Worsley Green with John Aldred Worsley, a picturesque hamlet with a traditional English village green, right? Wrong! All is not what it seems at Worsley, for here was one of the busiest, noisiest and smokiest centre of mining operations for miles around. It was truly a cradle of the Industrial Revolution. unusual crane at Worsley Delph 1760s From the eighteenth century, industrialists, writers and even royalty were drawn to come and marvel at this amazing place where weird and wonderful machinery was being employed in a setting the like had not been seen before. Worsley was at the cutting edge of the modern industrial world. Then, in the early twentieth century, all was transformed to what we see today. The incredible story of Worsley Green is full of surprises and is sure to change your ideas of ‘picturesque Worsley’. Worsley Green when works yard Worsley Green now Friday 7 November 2.00pm Walkden Yard: a community grows up around an industrial powerhouse, with Alan Davies Whilst Worsley Village was being given a rural makeover, the centre of coal mining operations moved to Walkden and Little Hulton. Find out how this remarkable undertaking impacted on and shaped the Walkden that we know today. Fred Dibnah Walkden town centre 1930s Friday 21 November 2.00pm Did you like that? Remembering Fred: local legend, steeplejack, historian and TV presenter Fred Dibnah, with Alf Molyneux. Fred Dibnah had the gift of the gab. Not only could he describe and explain industrial machinery, buildings and operations in colourful, everyday language, but he was able to popularise what had been considered a rather specialised subject of industrial history. Enjoy stories and memories of the colourful character that was Fred from one of his closest friends, Alf Molyneux, in this conclusion to our industrial heritage series for 2014. All at Walkden Gateway, 2, Smith St., Worsley, M28 3EZ. £3.50 per ticket. Book at any Salford library, phone 909-6518 or email [email protected].
