JESSE SAUNDERS’ DJ sets are not only music to your ears, but a musical journey through the history and foundation of House Music and Hip Hop and their influences through popular music. House Music is known as a more underground sound, but its elements come from everyday popular music. Its origination is embedded in R&B, electronic Hip Hop such as "Planet Rock" (by Soul Sonic Force/Afrika Bambaata), Gospel, Jazz, New Wave and Classic Rock. So it's no wonder that with all these influences you can't help but love how Jesse manipulates the music to make it an experience that you won’t forget. It's more of a DJ SHOW than a DJ playing records. Stay tuned...

Jesse embarked on a cross-country journey to spread the love of House Music in 2008, which resulted in teaming up with long-time Billboard Reporter Andy K to present an incredible 2 nights of pure House Music to Charlotte, NC @ the incredible club Garden & Gun! Jesse’s 1st night was Halloween, October 31, 2008. The previous week there were only 20 people in attendance, on Halloween that was multiplied by 30!

Born and raised in Chicago, JESSE SAUNDERS felt the "groove to make people move" at the early age of fifteen. He boasts an extensive record, CD and MP3 collection dating back to 1974 from R&B, Classic Rock, Hip Hop & Rap, Disco and Alternative. He says DJing is in his blood “a true DJ never grows out

of it.” There's nothing like the rush of controlling the crowd and having them yell for more."

Jesse has played in and promoted clubs from America to Africa, Europe and Asia. He began his career in Chicago spinning at places like high school dances and house parties, then graduated to bigger venues and clubs such as The Blue Gargoyle, First Impressions, Maclenda’s, Sauer’s, The Mansion, The Playground and DaVinci Manor; all cornerstones in the history of House Music. Quickly he moved to the next level, playing at New York's auspicious Sound Factory, Tunnel, Danceteria, The Fun House and Palladium. The house phenomenon spread over the globe with JESSE SAUNDERS leading the way. He produces a syndicated radio show entitled "The Global House Show". The show features "live" broadcasts from clubs around the world including his "Real Story" History Mix" and is highly influential. He went on to headline the biggest festivals and events all over the globe such as Germany’s May Day, Love Parade and Nature One, Switzerland’s Rave On Boat, London’s Tribal Gathering and in America Love Parade, Love Festival, Ultra, Together as One and Cyberfest.

2009 brought 25 years since the origination of Chicago’s House Music phenomenon. To celebrate, Jesse, along with Red Stripe as a sponsor, th embarked on the 25 Anniversary of House Music Tour. The Tour consisted of Jesse mixing his Real Story documentary LIVE on Pioneer DVJ1000s, the 1st ever House Music Art exhibit and an awards ceremony which recognized the pioneer in each city that was most influential in making House Music happen in that particular city. The Tour hit over 25 cities worldwide including London, Johannesburgh, South Africa and of course Chicago! The Tour continues as a celebration to this day and if you haven’t witnessed it yet, be sure to be a part of it when it comes to a city near you!

Jesse Saunders Biography-2008 2 2010 has brought a philanthropic milestone for JESSE SAUNDERS. After the 25th Anniversary of House Music Tour and its overwhelming success in spreading the spirit and love for the world’s most endearing style of music, Jesse decided to build a shrine, tribute and art museum known as the Café (www.ElectronicMusicCafe.com), which houses the travelling exhibit from the tour and is the foundation for the first ever musically inspired art gallery. Jesse’s plan is to franchise the Art & Music Gallery/Café across the USA and abroad in the mold of the Hard Rock Café. The tour has already garnered rave reviews and plentiful video footage, which makes this project a hot commodity. Here are links which feature reviews and video coverage of the tour:

But Jesse didn’t stop there. He has instituted the Music Arts Society, Inc. whose goal is to preserve the historical and artistic foundation of today's pop music known as, electronic music; which has its roots in the prolific genres of yesterday (i.e. blues, jazz, rock & roll, new wave and disco) This supports the greater community by teaching the youth how to navigate the music and art industry through creative, educational and practical programs.

With Credentials such as these, to say that JESSE SAUNDERS is an icon is an understatement. His message of education, love, peace and harmony through feel good music has been recognized by the Mayors of Chicago, Seattle, San Francisco and Albuquerque with proclamations for his own day in those cities. As a matter of fact, he has received another from the city of Chicago and the state of Illinois as recently as August 10, 2005. Paul Allen’s Experience Music Project in Seattle, Washington has inducted Jesse into the musical archives of their museum. The Chicago Symphony Orchestra has done the same with his book. His book is required reading material for Colleges and Universities all over the world. With all these accomplishments, it's easy to understand why Jesse is recognized as not only the "Originator" of House Music, and various styles of Electronic and DANCE MUSIC, but its Ambassador as well...

"The Originator Of House Music" [edit]

House music first got its start within the walls of Chicago's nightclub, thus attaining its name. As the music moved to the wider community, the sound significantly changed and what developed is House music as it eventually came to be known. While one of his biggest influences, and another instrumental figure in the development of House, , confined himself to the gay nightclub scene (primarily that of the Warehouse), Saunders took the unique sounds of the Windy City to the masses. Instead of relying solely on disco and R&B like Knuckles, Saunders expanded his musical repertoire and fused it with the turntable trickery that remains a staple to this day. As a DJ he would accentuate desired moments in songs through loops and repetition, focusing on sections that were stripped down to just the drum or bass - a tradition he would carry on as a producer.

Early years [edit]

Saunders took an early liking to music, beginning with piano at age five and eventually making his

way through every instrument available to him. Amongst his early musical influences were , , Smokey Robinson and Earth Wind & Fire. He also became fascinated with sports, displaying his greatest strengths in baseball and tennis, winning multiple city championships with his team in the latter. Saunders was also an honors student, attending the same high school where the likes of Chaka Kahn and R.Kelly also attended.

Career [edit]

At the age of sixteen, Saunders became exposed to Chicago's night club scene, enthralled by the sounds of Frankie Knuckles and others in the scene. It wasn't long before he became a nightclub headliner, and in 1982, he opened up his own nightclub, the Playground. Attendance figures soon outnumbered those of the Warehouse and Saunders used the opportunity to incorporate his original material into his sets. By 1983 he was producing his own music and in early 1984 he released the first official House music record along with Vince Lawrence, "On & On", on the label they made together, Jes Say Records. "Funk U Up" (the first House track to ever make it onto the Billboard charts), "Real Love", "Love Can't Turn Around" (the song that started the House music revolution in the UK) and "Dum Dum" soon followed. His group, Jesse's Gang was eventually signed to Geffen Records, releasing the album Center of Attraction shortly after, with the single off the album, "I'm Back Again" becoming a top ten club hit. By the late 1980s, Saunders decided to focus all his efforts on writing, producing and remixing instead of DJing. Throughout the 1990s, he made his way back to DJing, touring the world over, as well as trying his hand at producing music for television. His independent label, Broken Records, fully embraced the digital revolution by distributing music solely via the Internet. Since 1991 he has been involved in House Music Reunion Picnic, celebrated every Fourth of July weekend. The event brings together over 100 DJs and attracts upwards of 8,000 people. In 1997 he reunited with the other forefathers of House music to release Chicago Reunion Album.

Personal life [edit]

Saunders' mother, a University graduate in Early Childhood Education, was his primary carer and a great supporter of his sporting and music pursuits. His maternal grandfather, a funeral business owner, was voted "Mayor" of Bronzeville (then the Black section of Chicago) from 1937-1939. He also became heavily involved in the Civil Rights Movement and promoted the career of legendary gospel singer .

This is the second promo compilation that got from Broken Records, Chicago USA. ‘’Made 2 B Broken’’ last year was a great collection with new and back catalogue tracks of the label and this new one stands on the top too. ‘’Old Skool New Skool’’ compiled by Jesse Saunders again and the house legend plays excellently with the words like with the included trakcs. First of all we can hear old school sounds of Broken Records, older releases like last year’s Cannyrock & Alessia Kay’s ‘’Cube Ah Reloaded’’ touched by Didier Vanelli’s Soul Power – Gibson Brothers latin disco anthem ‘’Cuba’’ cover, Splash’s ‘’Nite By Nite’’ from 2006, Dj Ernan’s sexy ‘’Cum With Me’’ at its Gruv Mix from 2005 and Jesse Saunders own house stormers ‘’On & On’’ remixed – first ever house track from 1983’’, ‘’Feelin Me’’ on Gruv Vox version and ‘’In The Heat Of Passion’’ – the last one in two different remixes all ones closer to the disco sound. Old school on the other hand we can name the disco era of music and Calling All Boyz Remix on ‘’In The Heat Of Passion’’ cos sounds like italo disco, the sound that was popular in Chicago in the early 80’s and inspired Jesse Saunders to create something new, what we call house music now. New School represented here by the new sings of the label like Pablo Awad, Ron Jameson, Romano Giorgio and Ricky Teixeira. Ron Jameson’s ‘’I Was Born’’ is a bomb, an atari electro rock disco house funk weapon, Pablo Awad’s ‘’Esperanza’’ reminds me old italo house blend with ambient house smell, Romano Giorgio’s ‘’Just Kiss Me’’ is a big room monster and open air crowd pleaser and at last Ricky Teixeira’s ‘’Style’’ got a pumpin’ underground sound that sounds so 2010.

Aaron-Carl says: August 17, 2010 at 4:22 am

Jesse Saunders has one again managed to take the House music world by storm with this release… And I love how this entire EP tells a story. I gravitated toward Romano Giorgio’s “Just Kiss Me” and Ricky Teixeira’s “Style” initially — those were the two most “underground” tracks on the compilation, in my opinion. But THEN I gave the entire package another listen.. I appreciate EACH track as its own place in House music’s timeline. “Cum With Me”

— sexy. No other words to describe it. I know this isn’t a review in the formal sense, but I didn’t want to leave the one-line feedback that says “Great set!” OLD SKOOL NEW SKOOL deserves much more than that. A BIG thanks to Broken Records and Jesse Saunders for reminding us what REAL House music was — and thankfully, still is…

Love The Album..

Frank Ainsworth says: August 19, 2010 at 1:49 am

A nice package is this. Pick of the bunch for me: Cube Ah, Feelin Me, In The Heat Of Passion (funk dat), Come With Me and Don’t Cry No More.

records sunset ep Throughout February we’re celebrating Black History Month by interviewing some of the most important black electronic music pioneers and contributors, and we’re proud to tech tech house have him as our first interviewee. techno umek we know the feeling Ladies and gentleman, please stand for Jesse Saunders . More Tags What was it like during the early days of house? Advertisements The early days were spent finding the best, most soulful, and uplifting disco records out of New York and Philly. I’m talking the late 1970s. There was only one place that carried them and it was called Sounds Good, on the northside of Chicago.

When Frankie arrived, he would get them directly from New York although was already playing them at Den One before Frankie.

Lil Louis was also on top of things on the west side. A DJ by the name of Mike Ezebuku was doing it on the southside. I was 15 or so at this time, around 1977 to ‘78.

As we started to progress and bring A young DJ: Jesse Saunders this deep house music (as it should be called to differentiate it from the 1980s Chicago house) to the masses - teenagers and college students that didn’t go to gay clubs - the term house stuck because we would often associate it to the style that Frankie played at the Warehouse.

DJs such as myself, my brother Wayne Williams, and eventually Alan King, Tony Hatchett, and Andre Hatchett were in a crew called the Chosen Few.

We DJed every major event in Chicago from 1978 through 1984 when I made the first house record! DJs in those days had lots of love for each other - there was no fighting as to who was the best, except maybe Farley “Jackmaster” Funk!

We supported all the crews and parties that each other promoted.

So how would you compare it to today’s house I get people all the music scene? time coming into The camaraderie is back after suffering for many years the Electronic because of the competition. The only difference in Music Café in today’s scene is that we have better technology. amazement because they think I think that’s good and bad at the same time. Bad, because in the early days you had to be a musician a white person and understand song structure and songwriting to started house make music. music! All I can do is laugh… I feel that when we gave the ability for everyone to make tracks, we lost the essence of what music production is all about. On the other hand, I feel that allowing everyone the opportunity to be able to express themselves musically is a wonderful thing as well!

Why was house music important for black culture?

It was important because it once again showed that black music is always the catalyst for rhythm and musical styles that dominate pop culture.

Of course it’s a part of black history. I’m black – or at least the last time I looked I was! Although, I get people all the time coming into the Electronic Music Café in amazement because they think a white person started house music! All I can do is laugh…

You’ve been quoted as saying that there are some ‘misconceptions’ with the origins of house music. Please explain what you meant.

[laughs] There are lots of misconceptions. Most of them are due to people taking credit

when they weren’t even around to witness what is was all about! Others are because people feel the need to embellish their role in the evolution.

Why did you decide to produce ‘On & On’ in 1984?

My records got stolen, which contained the original bootleg ‘On & On’ (which was my moniker). I used the bassline from Space Invaders and I wrote original arrangements around it to produce and write ‘Fantasy’!

‘On & On’ is the DJ track version of ‘Fantasy’!

Back then, had the term ‘house music’ been coined yet?

House music had been coined, but it wasn’t really associated with what we were doing. People were shortening the term Warehouse to house as early as 1978.

It was a term used to describe the style of disco that Frankie, Ronnie, and Mike were playing. Since I was capturing the essence of the style with my On & On tracks, it was a great marketing tool to utilize when we released ‘On & On’ in 1984 on Jes Say Records.

What were your musical influences at the time that you produced the track?

Electronic records such as Dr.’s Cat ‘Love Is The Drug’, anything by Kraftwerk, and the bootleg mix of ‘On & On’. It was because this record was stolen from my collection that led me to make ‘On & On’!

What is the track an ode to?

The bootleg version of ‘On & On’ was my signature record. I was the only one to play it at the time. No one knew what it was, and I wasn’t telling. What it actually was, was the B side of a Mega Mix record, which is like a mix or podcast today on vinyl.

Vince and I were basically talking nonsense on ‘On & On’! Just random things about how the music makes you feel.

http://www.beatportal.com/feed/item/black-history-jesse-saunders-and-house-music/xx[9/8/2010 2:04:31 PM] Black History Month: Jesse Saunders and house music | Beatportal

So it was all pretty innocent then?

I just wanted another version that I could play in my DJ sets. A guy by the name of Frank Sells, who worked at the Importes Etc. record store told me that he could sell lots of ‘On & On’ if I released it. That’s when the light bulb came on…

Did you imagine back then that ‘On & On’ would lead to the explosion of house?

Nope! I had no idea of the magnitude because in those days there was no internet to gauge it by. It caught me completely by surprise!

What kit did you use to produce the track?

A Korg Poly 61 keyboard, a Roland 808 , and a TB 303 Bassline machine.

Do you have any other unreleased productions It made me feel from those early days? very accomplished! I have a few actually. When I listen to them I realize Chicago never that I’ve come a long way, but I understood what it recognized took to make a hit record even at the beginning of my anything that we production career. did in the ‘80s and

I plan to release them soon on Broken Records so stay early ‘90s tuned.

In 1997, Mayor Daley named July 17th Jesse Saunders and the Pioneers of House Music Day for Chicago. How was that?

It made me feel very accomplished! Chicago never recognized anything that we did in the ‘80s and early ‘90s. House music had become a mainstay around the world, but Chicago didn’t really appreciate it in my eyes.

So when Mayor Daley signed and presented that proclamation to me it felt like 14 years in the making had finally come to fruition. He later signed another one eight years later. Now, we have the full support from the city to host our annual House Music Reunion every 4th of July weekend in Hyde Park.

Last year over 40,000 people came out to testify and celebrate. This year we expect over 50,000! For more info check: ChosenFewDJs.com.

Who do you consider are the true ‘chosen few’ pioneers of house music?

First and foremost, I must give tribute to the man, the innovator, and the reason why we continue to blaze new trails, Ron Hardy.

If it were not for Ron Hardy, there would be no Frankie Knuckles, Jesse Saunders, Steve Hurley, Marshall Jefferson or Farley “Jackmaster” Funk!

Frankie Knuckles brought the New York soulful disco sound to Chicago.

Robert Williams had the gusto to formulate, build, and run a club that everyone else considered to be nothing more than a gay joint, which influenced Jesse’s Gang the foundation to build what we know as house music today - The Warehouse!

Wayne Williams encouraged me to DJ and he had the foresight, and the drive to take this ‘Warehouse’ music into the mainstream crowd (with my help).

Lil Louis held it down on the west side while myself, Wayne, Michael Ezebuku, Frankie and Ronnie did it respectively. It was a concerted effort on all of our parts that made house music a household name in Chicago.

His record ‘French Kiss’ was a ground-breaking release worldwide that led to the explosion of house internationally.

Paul Weisberg took the initiative to bring those hard-to-find records to his store,

Importes etc., and he understood that the new underground movement of house needed a retail outlet.

Marshall Jefferson provided an anthem for our cause and took the production value to new heights with his work on the Ten City and more.

Graham Armstrong and Lee Michaels took a chance and put house music on major Chicago radio stations WGCI and WBMX, which spearheaded the revolution and eventual takeover of radio in the ‘80s.

Vince Lawrence showed me the way to put house on wax and co-wrote most of the early hits with me!

Chip E was a good understudy and took the reins when I left for Hollywood.

Larry Sherman saw a young entrepreneur’s spirit - me - and he guided me in the right direction to make a business out of house.

Rocky Jones was a visionary, and not only promoted the first house record through his record pool Audio Talent, but he built the foundation for ‘Love Can’t Turn Around’ and ‘Jack Your Body’ to become No.1 hits on Top Of The Pops in the United Kingdom.

DJ Pierre twisted our traditional house music into acid.

And Fast Eddie, Mr. Lee, Kool Rock Steady & Tyree Cooper fused rap with house to create the hip house sound.

Who are your black heroes or mentors?

http://www.beatportal.com/feed/item/black-history-jesse-saunders-and-house-music/xx[9/8/2010 2:04:31 PM] Black History Month: Jesse Saunders and house music | Beatportal

My hero is my grandfather, Robert H. Miller, who was an integral part of the Civil Rights movement of the ‘50s and ‘60s, who put his money where his mouth was and actually financed the march on Selma and walked with Martin Luther King. He was also the first black man elected to the electoral college and the only man to serve two terms as the Mayor of Bronzeville (the black section of Chicago).

My mentors are Ernie Singleton, former head of MCA (Universal Music) Black Music, and Benny Medina who guided me to become the producer that I am today by taking me under his wing when I first signed to Geffen/Warner Bros. Records in 1986.

It was with his guidance and later his trust that I was able to become the go-to guy when they needed a project finished at Warner Bros.. Some of these projects included Jermaine Stewart, Club Nouveau, Karen White, Simple Pleasure, and El DeBarge.

Have you yourself been involved in the Civil Rights Movement?

My mother was involved; my grandfather was involved, so therefore I was involved. It was a family thing and I had a major legacy to uphold. I rode on the bus that my grandfather hired to recreate the march on Selma that he did with Dr. King.

The Ku Klux Klan marched against us and we had major opposition from the police in Alabama, but at the end I was proud to be a part of erecting the statue in front of the church commemorating this historic event.

Z Factor’s 1984 LP, which featured Jesse Saunders, is considered to be the very first house music album. 24 years later it has been reissued and this article looks at the stories behind it’s standout track, ‘Fantasy’, and the track that came after it, ‘On & On’.

I’ve previously written about a couple of early Citinite projects, when I was just thinking of ideas to get my label started, but one of the earliest projects that I had planned was a reissue of the best tracks from the Z Factor album. Z Factor was Vince Lawrence’s group and they had recorded the classic new wave track, ‘(I Like To Do It In) Fast Cars’. (Lawrence went on to found Trax Records with Larry Sherman.) House music pioneer Jesse Saunders joined the group a little while after ‘Fast Cars’, and http://citinite.wordpress.com/2008/07/03/jesse-saunders/[9/7/2010 1:23:41 PM] Jesse Saunders « Those City Nights

together they released what was to arguably turn out to be the first house track ever written, ‘Fantasy’.

Back in late 2003 I got in touch with Saunders and he was up for doing the reissue; we were also going to include ‘On & On’ on the record, both the original and an unreleased version from 1984. The original version of ‘On & On’ was written and produced by Saunders just after he wrote ‘Fantasy’. Eventhough ‘Fantasy’ was produced first, ‘On & On’ can claim to be the first house track actually released.

Unfortunately, Saunders didn’t possess any good quality masters of any of the Z Factor album tracks so I tracked down a copy of the original vinyl release, in the hope of using that as a master source. I eventually found a copy on eBay and after an intense round of bidding, won the auction. The auction ended up being talked about on a number of music forums due to the high price that I eventually paid… $615! I think I inadvertently made a bit of history there.

Well, when I eventually got the record it was a bit of a disaster; the quality of the pressing was typical of a lot of the early Chicago records – a thin sound with lots of surface noise – due to the pressing plant’s habit of grinding down old vinyl to re-use. We tried cleaning it up but with little success. Saunders also sent me the unreleased version of ‘On & On’, and whilst this track was pretty amazing, the master also had some kind of interference which would have made it impossible to release without editing it.

I was unwilling to try to track down another copy, so all things considered I decided to drop it and sold my copy of the album (for $600). I kept a recording of it so it wasn’t a complete washout, and shortly afterwards I signed Robert O’Dell to the label, and so Citinite was eventually launched.

Well, today a friend of mine sent me an email; it seems that the Z Factor album is being reissued by another label. The weird part about it is that the label is called Cititrax. When I saw the details of the release, for one or two seconds I thought I’d fallen into some parallel universe, where Citinite was called Cititrax, and I’d released the Z Factor album after all. (And I literally mean that – I actually thought I was in another dimension… I’ve obviously been listening to too many science programmes on the radio.)

Looking at their label’s website it looks like they’ve done a good job, pressing it on 160gsm vinyl, and they’ve even gone to the trouble of printing an insert sheet with the below band photo. The Citinite incarnation wouldn’t have been the full album, only the best tracks, so it’s nice that Cititrax have gone the whole way.

I’d actually gotten as far as putting together a press release with the help of Saunders, mainly consisting of the following interview which was done in 1994 and originally published in Jonathan Fleming’s book, What Kind Of House Party Is This?

Fleming asked Saunders how house music started: Well, there are two ways to translate that. If you wanna speak of house as the movement, the sounds and the music that we know today, we’re talking about 1983. If you’re talking about what was the catalyst to make it grow to what it finally grew into, then you’ve got to go back to the disco days. But see, there’s a very thin line between what was disco and truly what house is today.

So starting from the beginning, it all transcended from the Warehouse basically, because if my step-brother Wayne Williams hadn’t gone there and heard that music, in turn he would never have taken me there, and we wouldn’t have been able to grow as a company and as a force to forge this music on people and make them listen and believe in it. All I did in 1983 was actually embellish that whole thing and kinda put it together. What we did was gather all the right ingredients, and luckily I was just http://citinite.wordpress.com/2008/07/03/jesse-saunders/[9/7/2010 1:23:41 PM] Jesse Saunders « Those City Nights

fortunate enough to be able to take all of that and make it into the sound we know today as house.

I mean, I had to have a vision in order to make something, but really what I was doing was just taking a little o’ this and a little o’ that, a little creativity, and making that one sound that became the first record, which was ‘On & On’. But I can’t take credit for the ingredients, you know, it’s just like making a recipe – you can’t take credit for basil or salt & pepper because they have always been there, you’re just using them to create your recipe, and that’s exactly what I did with disco to make my ‘On & On’, besides the original ‘On & On’ record that already existed.

We’re in 1983, I’m at The Playground DJing, and I mean we open at nine o’clock and we don’t close until the last person leaves which sometimes was seven, eight, nine o’clock in the morning, and when you’re playing that long, you get into a groove but it’s kinda redundant, because there’s only so many things that you can play and you have to kinda keep it going. So what I would do is I would take different kinds of rhythm tracks that I made at home with my 808 drum machine, and basically I would put other records on top of ‘em. A lot of the time I would take the drum machine to the club and just leave it playing the same beat the whole time and just mix things in and out, so it was always constantly the same beat underneath to keep the crowd going, but I would play a different song on top.

There was one record in particular that I used to do this with a lot, which was the original ‘On & On’, which was basically this bootleg record where someone had taken the bassline from ‘Space Invaders’, the “toot-toot, hey, beep-beep” loop of Donna Summer’s ‘Bad Girls’, and the little horn thing in ‘Funky Town’, and looped them all together to make a constant loop for a whole record. This was the b-side of the record. The a-side was a big megamix of ‘Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough’ by , and that was the side that everyone played.

Now people like Frankie Knuckles, although he had the keenest ear for music and could break records that way, in terms of a real DJ, he couldn’t mix really. His mixing was kinda all over the place. But it wasn’t about the mix with him, it was about the records that he played. But I was all about doing stuff backwards, cutting’ and scratchin’ and the whole nine yards; so basically I was mixing and re-editing records right on the turntables without using tapes and things like that. What I was doing basically was taking the music to a whole different level and a whole new experience of listening to three or four things at one time rather than just one song.

Anyway, like I was saying, everyone was playing the a-side of this record and I just happened to flip it over wondering what was on the b-side, and when I listened to it, it was like “doom doom doom dibi doom doom doom doom, doom doom doom dibi doom doom doom doom” and I was like, “aah damn, that’s a nice groove”. So I was like, “okay, cool, this is cool. I’m gonna try this cut on my crowd”, and when I put it on, they didn’t clear the floor – everybody kinda got into the groove. Then I played it again a little later and more people got on the floor, then I played it again and people started requesting it, so I was like, “cool”. So I had a drum machine going, ‘On & On’ going on one turntable, and I’d be bringing in another record like ‘Planet Rock’, when that came out, on the other turntable.

By this time, I’m doing a lot of guest spots, an hour here, an hour there, and so on and so forth, and also doing like a mix show on WGCI with Herb Kent who got me on the show to begin with. So whenever I played, my first record on the turntable would

http://citinite.wordpress.com/2008/07/03/jesse-saunders/[9/7/2010 1:23:41 PM] Jesse Saunders « Those City Nights

be this bootleg ‘On & On’ record because that was like my signature tune. When I put that on, everybody knew that I was in the place because nobody else was playing that side but me, no one even knew what it was, and I wouldn’t tell anybody, even though there were a few people that had it. When I would go up on stage I would make sure that security cleared it so that no one would know what it was that I was playing. It was amazing to me that they hadn’t flipped that record over and found it themselves.

Anyway, after about nine or ten months, we had an incident at The Playground where someone broke in and stole some of my records, and ‘On & On’ was one of them that they stole. I was so pissed off ’cause now I didn’t have my signature record and I couldn’t make the crowd go wild the way I used to when I came on. So I was like, “well I’m gonna make one myself”.

You see, my mother is a music major, a music teacher, so I had taken music lessons all through my life. She started me off playing piano. I had flute lessons, trumpet lessons, guitar lessons, drum lessons, the whole nine yards. So basically, DJing to me at that time was just playing records and breaking records, I hadn’t really associated the fact that someone actually writes a song, goes in the studio, records it and then presses it on a record – that never really occurred to me at that time. But by the time I got a drum machine I was thinking maybe I can do a record, because I knew I could play.

That was when those Mattel Synsonic drum machines came out. When I heard about those, that was the first thing I went out and got, so that I could make a beat and do some things with it, and that’s when I wrote this song called ‘Fantasy’, which basically was a concoction of the bassline from the ‘Space Invaders’-'On & On’ thing and the bridge from one of Ronnie Griffith’s songs. The lyrics were all original and I did the string arrangements at home on the piano. I got my mother to go out and get a Korg Poly-61 keyboard and I just kinda used the feel from a lot of the songs and records that I played that were hits to kinda concoct them and embrace them into this one thing, ‘Fantasy’.

I just used to sit up in my den and create songs and different things, and that’s when ‘On & On’ was done, on that Korg Poly-61 keyboard, an 808 drum machine and a TB- 303 bassline machine. All of this was recorded on a four track cassette recorder, the same as the original ‘Fantasy’ and all the other stuff that we recorded at Jes Say Records.

Anyway, I was getting ahead of myself; that was the time that I ran into Vince Lawrence. Actually, I had known Vince prior to this from back in the days at Sauer’s when Craig Thompson (who had the finance) and I were promoting parties there. Because Sauer’s was becoming the hot spot, Craig had somehow formulated a deal with the owner and had booked up every Friday and Saturday there for a year. Now, how I met Vince was when he came up to me and told me that he was part of a group that was renting Sauer’s prior to Craig monopolising this deal, and he said to me, “yeah, you all were slick booking up that place – now no one can get in there”. That was our first encounter. After Craig and I had our stint at Sauer’s and we went on to running The Playground, Vince started coming there. http://citinite.wordpress.com/2008/07/03/jesse-saunders/[9/7/2010 1:23:41 PM] Jesse Saunders « Those City Nights

This was about the time that Vince had his ‘Fast Cars’ record. He’d hangout at first, and then he’d try and get me to play his record, but it wouldn’t fit – it just wasn’t the kind of record that I could play… not to say that it was a bad record. I mean it was the first record that he had ever made so naturally a lot of things were loose, but overall for a first attempt it was good and I still worked it and tried to get it into the set and help promote it and the whole nine yards.

Then Vince came to talk to me about this and that and how to make a record – he just had all this knowledge of, like, making records because his father Mitch, had a record company and had already pressed some other blues type records and things, before he’d even put out ‘Fast Cars’, so Vince knew about the independent record company thing. And like I said, I wanted to kinda make a record myself, so I was kinda pickin’ his brain to find out what it took to do that. I thought it was like this big involved process, but he’s like, “no, no maan, it’s easy – you just do this, there’s a pressing plant over here, you do that, you do the labels…” and so on and so forth. So I was trying to find out through Vince how I could do that, but I got kinda side-tracked in the interim because he had heard ‘Fantasy’ and he was like, “this is the stuff that I’ve always wanted to do but I don’t know how to do it”.

Now Vince is one of these nerdy type of guys, but he’s pretty smart, he knows how to finagle his way into situations, and to this day he never ceases to amaze me in the things that he gets himself into. I mean, this guy could talk his way into the presidency and everyone will be asking, “how did he get there?” – that’s the kind of guy he is. So because he had the group Z Factor and he knew I had written ‘Fantasy’, he was like, “would you be interested in being a part of Z Factor?” At first I was like, “no, I’m not interested”, because they had made ‘Fast Cars’ and that wasn’t something that I wanted to do. But as I thought more about it, I was like, “well, maybe this is the way that I can get his father to put out ‘Fantasy’”, because his father had the record company. So then I was like, “okay, I’ll try it and we’ll see”.

When I joined Mitch, he was ecstatic about ‘Fantasy’ too because he knew, first off, I was like the man in town – the big DJ – that I was playing it in the clubs, that I gave Frankie Knuckles a tape of it before the record came out, and he was actually playing the reel-to-reel tape. The Warehouse and everybody knew the record, so it was almost like he had a built-in promotion network and all he had to do was press it and sell it. But what happened was, it took him a long time to actually press the record and get it out.

In the meantime I was playing all over the place and I had been playing my own ‘On & On’ track now, and because I had gotten so frustrated with Mitch taking so long to get ‘Fantasy’ out, I was like, “well shoot, I’m gonna put out my own ‘On & On’ thing and make some money off of that”.

Another reason I wanted to put that out so fast was that we were getting requests from the record pool I belonged to called IRS that was a part of Importes Etc, although it was in a different building. Whatever I would play at The Playground that night, people would run to Importes Etc the next day trying to find it, and this is one of the ways the record pool gets its information on what the buzz is on a record from the streets. The original ‘On & On’ they couldn’t find, because that was a bootleg. Then, when I was playing my version, they couldn’t find that either because it wasn’t even a record yet. But the people knew who was playing it, because I was the only one who had it. So when I went to the record pool the guys there said, “people are requesting something we don’t know anything about – why don’t you make a tape so we can hear http://citinite.wordpress.com/2008/07/03/jesse-saunders/[9/7/2010 1:23:41 PM] Jesse Saunders « Those City Nights

It?” So I made a tape, they played it, and sure enough someone said, “yeah, that’s it”, and they’re like, “what is it?”, and I said, “well, that’s my track, that’s ‘On & On’”. Then they were like, “maan, if you can get your hands on two or three hundred copies of this, we can sell ‘em in the store like that!”, and I was like seeing money lighting up in my head.

All of a sudden I thought back to Vince again, because he could get the record pressed. I went downtown to a little studio that the group called Omni had; that’s where it was recorded to a quarter-inch tape for mastering, and then we pressed the record at Larry Sherman’s place on the Jes Say Records label, which Vince named and did the logo for. I took the last thousand dollars I had to my name and invested it into pressing these records ’cause I knew I was gonna be able to sell them already.

Within ten days I had five hundred records and we sold them for four dollars when the actual rate back then was only two dollars and fifty cents, so Importes Etc was selling them for six ninety nine. We used a hundred for promotion, I made six hundred dollars profit off of the first batch and Importes Etc wanted two or three hundred more records, so we went back to Larry to press some more. But by this time places like Loop records and all these other places were calling, saying they wanted the record because they heard it was selling like hot cakes. So I was like, “well shoot, we need to press a thousand this time”, so we went in and pressed a thousand, and those were gone in like a week, and it just like started snowballing.

http://citinite.wordpress.com/2008/07/03/jesse-saunders/[9/7/2010 1:23:41 PM] Jesse Saunders « Those City Nights

‘On & On’ actually came out in January of 1984, beating Mitch out with ‘Fantasy’ because his didn’t come out until a month or so later, but he capitalised off of that whole thing. ‘Fantasy’ got on the radio on WGCI and he ended up selling records that way, and to this day I have never seen royalties, publishing or anything for that record. But it really wasn’t a big deal either because I was making all my money from my own label, so I really didn’t care so much at that point.

So then I started thinking, “if that happens with just like a track, I wonder what would happen if I do a real song”, and that’s when we wrote ‘Funk U Up’. That came about because Duane Buford was having problems with his girlfriend, and he was like, “maan, I ain’t never going out with no more pretty girls, they’ll just fuck you up”, and we’re like, “hey, that’s the name of a song”, but we couldn’t use “fuck” so we used “funk” instead. That was the first song that was recorded on twenty-four track.

When we put that out, that became an instant hit, because back in those days Farley was the man on the radio, he was like the leader of the Hot Mix 5 and if he played your record, it was a hit. So the whole Hot Mix 5 embraced ‘Funk U Up’ and it just became this big mega hit. Then I did ‘Real Love’ and that did ten times better than ‘Funk U Up’ did. In between those, I was doing Wayne’s record, ‘Undercover’, which was like a huge underground hit that was probably one of the first records to expand us out of the Chicago area, because we started getting calls from Detroit. So we went http://citinite.wordpress.com/2008/07/03/jesse-saunders/[9/7/2010 1:23:41 PM] Jesse Saunders « Those City Nights

up to Detroit to see what the club scene was like and they just embraced us. Then we went to Milwaukee, Indianapolis… then New York started getting our records and we were getting orders from there. The next thing we knew, guys from England were coming in wanting to license our product.

And that’s how it all started.

What Saunders doesn’t really mention in the above account is just how ground- breaking his ‘On & On’ track truly was. The reason why other DJs clamoured to buy his record wasn’t because he had recreated the ‘Space Invaders’ groove, but because he had forged a uniquely futuristic sound that could no longer simply be described as “disco”… it was something else. As genre-inspiring as ‘Planet Rock’ was for electro, ‘On & On’ was the first record to marry the synthetic stripped-down sounds of new electronic instruments with the spirit and heat of black dance music. There can’t be many other tracks that are this important… and to think it was only made because a thief stole his bootleg record.

There, it will host the most important elements of the Music & Arts Society. They include: a comprehensive visual exhibit called Spin: Evolution of the DJ, which was partially unveiled last Thursday; the "Art of the DJ" clinics, where various teachers, including Saunders himself, will give pupils hands-on lessons behind the ones and twos; and instruction on how to navigate and interact with the music industry. Again, Saunders, also the author of House Music ... The Real Story, would seem like a natural to helm this project.

What's not natural is his move from Los Angeles to Las Vegas. The Chicago native is co-credited with creating the first-ever pressed and distributed house track, 1984's "On and On." Since then, his credits for producing, writing and remixing dwarf those of most of his peers. He's also remained a fixture in the international club scene, watching it mutate for more than two decades -- and not necessarily for the better. Some of the degradations he's witnessed run rampant on the Strip.

Saunders hates how clubs have been run since they became so obsessed with bottle service, celebrity hosts and expensive production. "[The club owners] thought, 'Oh everybody follows the celebrities so let's charge $100 to see Paris Hilton!' And that's how we got where we are now," he says. On top of that, he accuses

As a result, Saunders wants to include a lesson about copyright in the M&AS curriculum. "Everything [the new DJs] are doing is copyright infringement, and they don't even know it." he says. More Jobs "That's a big problem that needs to be addressed as a part of the art."

You could say educating the DJs of tomorrow is Saunders's new calling, the reason he's sticking to Vegas instead of finding a city with a scene in touch with its musical roots. To be sure, his curriculum can be pretty subjective. "All these DJs are putting all their tracks up [on the Internet]... and they're terrible," Saunders says. "There's just so much crap up there and anybody can do it. ... What I'm trying to do is get people to do things the right way."

Still, his opinions and practices come from more than 30 years of experience. If his Music & Arts Society reflects Saunders's own resistance to where DJ culture has evolved, it's also an embrace of tradition -- and a commitment to an artistry that used to be the catalyst of nightlife instead of its mere soundtrack.

A 'Movement' forward

Las Vegas clubs aren't known for outwardly promoting diversity, the occasional Latin night aside. But the recently opened Crown Nightclub -- also known as Crown Theater, and formerly Club Rio Whiskarino and Prince's old Club 3121 -- has a different approach: Book an Helldorado Days brings the internationally respected DJ, promote difference and repeat bi- annual Whiskarino competition, where... monthly -- while aspiring to avoid the elitism of other clubs.

"We're going after the everyday person that comes to Vegas and is looking to have a good time -- and we're looking to provide them with that," says Darin Feinstein, Crown owner and operator. High Rollers Lali Outhommountry is trying to bring bank track... To do that, Crown's launching "The Movement," Las Vegas's first club night specifically promoted to Asian-Americans and musically spearheaded by resident DJ Qbert. Debuting June 23, the San Francisco-based scratch master will spin mostly hip-hop alongside various special guests like the Far East Movement and Knucklehead An Interview with Zoo. Qbert is the sixth major non-local resident signed to a major Vegas nightclub, following Paul Oakenfold, Z-Trip, Kaskade, Steve Imagine Dragons Aoki and DJ Skribble. Las Vegas based band Imagine Dragons talks about... But Crown promoters understand their marketing methods can't be so cut and dry. "Throwing an Asian-American event is kind of difficult because when labeling Asians, there are so many different types," says Airuzz Barroga, Marketing Director at Next Events, the group behind "The Movement." "You have Korean, Japanese, Filipino, etc."

Signing Qbert helps broaden the audience. "We're like the U.N. -- we cater to everybody," Feinstein says. "On Wednesday nights, it's catered toward an Asian theme. But everybody that enjoys [his] style of music is gonna want to hear Qbert because he's one of the most well-known DJs out there."

And for good reason. Born Richard Quitevis, the 40-year-old Filipino-American turntablist has played an integral part in shaping the American hip-hop scene through founding the Invisibl Skratch Piklz, the first turntable crew that applied a band philosophy to their shows, each DJ taking the place of different instruments. With and without them, he's pulled down a pile of awards, including the Disco Mix Club World DJ Champion four years straight.

Qbert sees his new residency as a way to bring people together through the art regardless of race. "I never even considered that ["The Movement"] was an Asian thing," he says. "I'm just doing it for the love of the art. If a bunch of Asians want to come out, then fine (laughs)." It isn't like he's never been asked to play for this specific group -- because of his heritage, he's propositioned for it all the time. "[It's] not my focus," he adds. "It's like they're saying,

According to discogs notes this is based on Laid Back's White Horse but from my Translate This Blog understanding and Jeese Saunders interviews and the track itself it's based on Mach - On And On which samples On And On. The mix contains the following songs: Chinese Munich Machine - Get On The Funk Train, Playback - Space Invaders. This Jesse Saunders - On And On is the first house record but there is debate on that some French people site Z-Factor Featuring Jesse Saunders - Fantasy as the first house record, but German according to Jesse Saunders and lots of people Jesse got his On & On pressed Italian first. There is a interview about 15minutes long where Jesse explains this and how he helped Vince Lawrence and Screamin Rachael on Z-Factor Featuring Jesse Saunders Japanese - Fantasy and he goes in complete detail about it. I need to find the link I think I Korean saved on my computer and if I do I'll do on update to this post, cause It's really worth Russian the listen. But on the other Hand I believe in my opinion Z Factor - (I Like To Do It In) Fast Cars is the first house record pressed.I will post 4 other links underneath Spanish this. The first being Mach - On And On.The second which Mach - On And On is based on among others is Playback - Space Invaders. The third is a short interview by Jesse Powered By about this record. And finally a link from youtube so check'em out.And hopefully I can find the full interview with Jesse.

He wrote, produced and released the first documented House record titled "ON & ON" through his own label Jes Say Records. His next hitz "Funk U Up," "Real Love" and the platinum selling single "Love Can't Turn Around," served as the foundation for a funky and soulful new sound in electronic music. Jesse Saunders reigns as the ambassador for the global house craze SEARCH ARCHIVES BY http://www.langstoncarson.com/news/view.php?id=155[9/7/2010 1:15:25 PM] BasementSoul.com :: News :: FEATURE: Jesse Saunders - Legend of House

through his work as a DJ, producer, filmmaker and author. After a TOPIC: lifetime of influential and innovative work, JESSE SAUNDERS continues to break new ground. Select Topic

2004 marked the beginning of his legacy. "ON & ON" was created and conceived in the summer of 1983, released in January of 1984, and 2004 marked the 20th anniversary and re-release of the world's most famous and enduring House record. The ON & ON world TOUR hit every hemisphere and brought the spirit of feel good music to all! The “Real Story” documentary is available for sale with the original tracks [Your Ad Here] as well as remixes on Enhanced CD, DVD.

JESSE’S legacy thrives. In the July, 2001 issue of Harper's magazine "Love Can't Turn Around" and "ON & ON" are mentioned as a building block in the history of dance music. Jesse has been featured in the Channel 4 (London) film special "Pump Up The Volume" and the award winning "Modulations". In June, 2,000, he released his third mixed CD Disco Royal (Sony Music Germany) with the hit single "Body Music." His previous 2 "Jail Mix” and “Rave On Boat” (Warner-Switzerland), sold very well. Jesse is currently working on a new Greatest Hitz album, which features 2 new cuts "GET SOME" and "FEELIN ME.". JESSE is also completing work on his next Mixed CD "MADE 2 B BROKEN" for his label BrokenRecords.us and DJ Divas 2, a unique compilation of the world's top female DJ's "in their quest to compete and win in the battle of the turntables."

2009 brought the 25th Anniversary of the world's 1st House record and Jesse released the 25th Anniversary of House Music Compilation to rave reviews and a tour which has brought a celebration of the world's favorite music to dance to! The tour featured the 1st ever House Music ART Exhibit which is now housed in Jesse's project known as the Electronic Music Cafe in Las Vegas!

Jesse has been featured in hundreds of books including the bestseller "What Kind Of House Party Is This?" by Jonathan Fleming (MixMag) and his own semi-autobiography "House Music...The Real Story." He has co-starred in over 10 documentaries including the Sun Dance award winning "Modulations," the Channel 4 (London) mini-series "Pump Up The Volume," the BBC audio documentary "The 2nd Summer of Love" and currently the award winning "Put The Needle on the Record." He has had hundreds of features in every major industry magazine including Rolling Stone, MixMag, Urb and Keyboard. Jesse has lectured at top conferences, schools, colleges and universities throughout the world including The Red Bull Academy, Oxford University, Boston University, The Winter Music Conference (Miami), Popkom (Germany), The New Music Seminar (New York) and the Amsterdam Dance Event (Holland).

In addition to keeping his skills sharpened in the studio and with constant touring, JESSE says, "I educate musical history and philosophy through music as well as print history, which is the [Your Ad Here] foundation and most important part of music." He has written an authoritative book House Music...The Real Story that nails down the House phenomenon. In 2001, Broken Records/Journees Music released the musical counterpart to JESSE’S book providing an auditory encyclopedia of sounds and styles.

In August of 2001, JESSE was also a keynote speaker for the Experience Music Project in Seattle, Washington. Also in the works is a documentary that will be released through JESSE’S film company Just Say Productions. “The Real Story Documentary” will include footage from the annual Old Skool Reunion in Chicago (July4th weekend) with the original Pioneers of House Music among others.

With the turn of the century, law officials in America have attacked dance music and culture. In response to this problem JESSE SAUNDERS founded Rave Secure. This organization acts as a mediator between promoters, artists and government legislature to ensure that clubs and raves do not become extinct. Jesse promotes good will and education, giving Rave Secure the power to hammer through the red tape and discrimination that the scene often contends with.

Born and raised in Chicago, Illinois JESSE SAUNDERS felt the "groove to make people move" at the early age of fifteen. He boasts an

extensive record collection dating back to 1974. He says DJ'ing "is in his blood a true DJ never grows out of it. There's nothing like the rush of controlling the crowd and having them yell for more."

JESSE’S creativity found additional outlets when he attended University of Southern California. There he laid a cornerstone studying Film, Television and Recording Sciences. Later, JESSE formed his own label Jes Say Records, and production company Just Say Productions.

Jesse has played in and promoted clubs from America to Europe and the U.K. He began his career in Chicago spinning at places like The Playground and DaVinci Manor. Quickly he moved to the next level, playing at New York's auspicious Sound Factory, Tunnel and Palladium. The house phenomenon spread over the globe with Jesse Saunders leading the way. He produced a syndicated radio show entitled "Global House". The show featured "live" broadcasts from clubs around the world including his "Real Story" History Mix" and was highly influential.

JESSE worked for a variety of record labels and studios including Jive where he broke top selling artists like Mr. Lee and DJ Pierre. In the late 1990's Jesse turned his expertise into a lucrative business of his own. The Just Say family of companies made a home for everything House and Mainstream from remixing and tracking to film and video, and even print. JESSE continues in his quest to educate and influence through his AVTalentSearch foundation and web site: AVTalentSearch.us and sponsored seminars for ASCAP and BMI plus he has been a featured speaker at the Red Bull Academy, Amsterdam Dance Event and Winter Music Conference. He has worked beside and influenced other DJs including Grammy Award winner Roger Sanchez, Marshall Jefferson, DJ Pierre, Farley "Jackmaster Funk," Steve Hurley and Frankie Knuckles.

The mayor of Chicago declared July 17th, JESSE SAUNDERS and the Pioneers of House Music Day in 1997, and he has received similar recognition by the mayors of San Francisco, Seattle, and Albuquerque, NM. He is featured in Jonathan Fleming's book What Kind of House Party Is This? (Mind In U Publishing, U.K.), and has been interviewed as the house authority for many films and magazine articles, including the award winning “Modulations,” “Pump Up The Volume” (London), "The 2nd Summer of Love" and currently "Put The Needle On The Record." Countless successful singles, albums and production credits behind him, JESSE SAUNDERS maintains his status as the head of the House.

JESSE believes in "breaking new ground and my music must have a message and a meaning". He opened wide the doors to his House and invited the world in. With programs like Rave Secure and AV Talent Search he ensures that his heritage will live on. He continues to tear the roof off with slamming sets and forays into the world of film and publishing. Whatever JESSE SAUNDERS does, one thing is certain, HOUSE is where his heart is.

By Jason Bracelin

Jesse Saunders is here to set the record straight, and as he traces the genealogy of house music on a recent Wednesday afternoon, he speaks with the fiery air of a parent whose offspring has become an orphan.

"Everybody and their mother and father said, 'I did it, I started it, I made this,' " Saunders says of house's now-muddy lineage. "That's what really motivated me to say, 'You know what, there's too many stories, and most of the people talking about it don't even have a clue, because they weren't even around when it happened.' "

But Saunders was.

A native of Chicago, where house was first popularized, Saunders is credited for producing and releasing the first house single, "On and On," on his own Jes Say Records label.

The seeds for the now-widespread dance were sown at Chicago's legendary Warehouse nightspot, where an underage Saunders first visited when he was 16.

There, house began as an even more buoyant strain of disco.

"The disco that everyone else knew was more poppy, it was 'Saturday Night Fever,' the Bee Gees, stuff like that," Saunders recalls. "But the stuff that was being played at the Warehouse, in the underground, was very, very uplifting, very, very groovy. It was sped-up R&B more than it was disco. There was a different subculture there, and that's really what spawned what we know as house music today."

Now residing in Las Vegas, Saunders has taken it upon himself to trace the origins of house with both a book coming out this summer and a visual and musical display that had a sneak peek at the Steve Wyrick Theatre. The show uses documentary footage projected on a pair of video screens to detail the history of house and where the music sprang from while Saunders mixes both the audio and video in a DJ set.

Jason Bracelin's "Sounding Off" column appears on Tuesdays. Contact him at 383-0476 or e-mail him at jbracelin@ reviewjournal.com.
