Apparel and Footwear “Teaser” Industry Report Apparel and Footwear “Teaser” Industry Report Industry Analysis Apparel and Footwear Q1 2012 Industry Overview Four girls walking down the streets of Manhattan wearing designer labels – Chanel, Dior, Gucci, Hermes, Louis Vuitton, Manolo Blahnik, Prada and Versace, among many other royalties in the world of fashion. The television series turned blockbuster movie Sex and the City (SATC) has undoubtedly nurtured the love for fashion and labels, not only of millions of American women, but also of those in other corners of the globe. As the show shot to popularity, women craved for Samantha Jones’ Birkin, Carrie Bradshaw’s Vivienne Westwood wedding dress, Charlotte York’s Prada skirts and Miranda Hobbes’ Louis Vuitton handbag. According to Sondra Grace, a professor of fashion design at the Massachusetts College of Art and Design, SATC has had a great influence on the fashion sense of the masses over the past decade. It also paved the way for more shows that centered on fashion – America’s Next Top Model, Gossip Girl and Fashion Runway. Mark Twain once said, “Clothes make the man. Naked people have little or no influence on society.” The love for fashion and the need to cover one’s self from the harsh impacts of the elements fuels the apparel and footwear industry. This industry gives each individual a chance to define himself before a word is uttered upon introduction. Clothes do indeed make the person. A powerful communicator, clothing is a primary component of one’s image. A piece of clothing or a pair of shoes can attract attention, command respect or inspire trust. The apparel and footwear industry encompasses manufacturers and designers of apparel, accessories, footwear, and textiles that are used for apparel. It includes makers of high-end apparel, accessories, and footwear, which are luxury goods such as handbags. Companies in this industry cater to two types of consumers: the practical consumer and the fashion-conscious consumer. For the first category, they provide sensible and affordable clothing whose styles will not change drastically from year to year. For the second category, the companies attempt to provide styles of clothing that keep up with the current seasons and trends. There are three categories of apparel companies: manufacturers, jobbers and contractors. Manufacturers perform the whole range of production, including designing, buying textiles and fabric, cutting,*Full sewing, report contains finishing, insurance and arranging-focused researchfor including: critical analysis, statistics, and qualitative sale. • Female Journalists in Candace Bushnell Novels
From Carrie to Nico: Female Journalists in Candace Bushnell Novels By Stephanie Wenger From Carrie to Nico: Female Journalists in Candace Bushnell Novels 2 Abstract This work examines the image of the female journalist in five novels by Candace Bushnell. Each novel features a female journalist who struggles to balance her demanding job and private life. This paper explores how the female protagonists in these modern novels differ and the ways in which they fit into the major stereotypes of female journalists. This paper will look at the characters’ professional lives, relationships with the opposite sex, and moral compasses. This paper also examines how the protagonists in the novels Sex and the City and Lipstick Jungle differ from their television counterparts. Lastly, this work will look at how Candace Bushnell’s images of the journalist fit into larger social theories about women in the media. From Carrie to Nico: Female Journalists in Candace Bushnell Novels 3 Introduction “Chick lit,” a pop culture abbreviation for chick literature, is a growing sector of the $23-billion publishing industry.1 This genre of books is considered to a subsection of women’s fiction and features “everyday women in their 20s and 30s navigating their generation’s challenges of balancing demanding careers with personal relationships.”2 These books made publishers $71 million in 2002 according to ABC News.3 Sessalee Hensely, a fiction buyer for giant retailer Barnes & Noble, explains, “The mega authors John Grisham, Michael Crichton, Tom Clancy all have had a fall-off in sales, but the chick lit is growing and they’re growing exponentially.”4 The increase in sales of these novels has made Hollywood take notice.

Knowing Good Sex Pays Off: The Image of the Journalist as a Famous, Exciting and Chic Sex Columnist Named Carrie Bradshaw in HBO’s Sex and the City By Bibi Wardak Abstract New York Star sex columnist Carrie Bradshaw lives the life of a celebrity in HBO’s Sex and the City. She mingles with the New York City elite at extravagant parties, dates the city’s most influential men and enjoys the adoration of fans. But Bradshaw echoes the image of many female journalists in popular culture when it comes to romance. Bradshaw is thirty-something, unmarried and unsure about having children. Despite having a successful career and loyal friends, she feels unfulfilled after each failed romantic relationship. I. Introduction “A wildly successful career and a relationship -- I was afraid…women only get one or the other.”1 That’s a fear Carrie Bradshaw just can’t shake. The sex columnist for the New York Star is unmarried, career-oriented and unsure if she will ever have a traditional family.2 Just like other modern sob sisters, she is romantically unfulfilled and has sacrificed aspects of her personal life for professional success.3 Bradshaw, played by Sarah Jessica Parker in HBO’s hit television show Sex and the City, portrays a stereotypical image of female journalists found in television and film.4 She and other female journalists in the series struggle to balance a successful Knowing Good Sex Pays Off: The Image of the Journalist as a Famous, Exciting and Chic Sex Columnist Named Carrie Bradshaw in HBO’s Sex and the City By Bibi Wardak 2 career and satisfying romantic life.

The success of the series that led to her award is a direct correlation to the large crowds that the film attracted when it made its debut in 2008. What is astounding, is that in 2007 only five of the fifty top grossing movies in American had a woman as a lead character , so not surprisingly critics throughout the nation were stunned at the great success the film Sex and the City had on its opening weekend. While critics were astounded, loyal fans predicted the success. The popularity of the film may perhaps be indicative of the times . This film came three years after the season finale of the HBO series also titled, Sex and the City . The series began at the peak of an ambitious female generation, empowered by third wave, and post-modern feminist movements. It may be that the emergence of a series that features the lives of four New York City women whose motto is to “do it like a man,” is the reason for the incredible following the series has had since its public debut.

  • The Representation of Gender Roles in the Media
The representation of gender roles in the media - An analysis of gender discourse in Sex and the City movies Therese Ottosson Xin Cheng Supervisor: Fredrik Sunnemark Examiner: Ann Towns Bachelor’s thesis in Political Science 15 ECTS Department of Economics and Informatics University West Spring term 2012 Abstract Media is a big part of people‘s everyday lives. It influences both how we see ourselves and the world to some extent. There are many different types of media, for example: television shows, movies, the radio, news papers, advertisements which are placed in random places and the internet. In these different forms of media, there are images of men and women, which are represented in different ways and with different characteristics. Research has been made on a lot of movies and television shows and this thesis will be adding to this vast amount of research by analyzing gender representation in the movies Sex and the City 1 and 2. By using discourse analysis, the results show different types of gender representation and whether the characters in Sex and the City challenge the patriarchal privilege. Assuming social constructivism, we believe that these images of gender representation in movies affect our perception of what a man or a woman is. Our results suggest that the characters do still follow the patriarchal privilege but some characters do on occasion challenge them. However the outcome is rarely successful. • 0Best Law Firms
BEST LAW FIRMS FOR 0WOMEN Sensible lawyer Miranda Hobbes (Cynthia Nixon) was always the most balanced of the Sex and the City foursome. The hard-driving, Harvard-educated lawyer put in long hours to make partner, bought a swank condo and still had time for countless brunches with Carrie, Samantha and Charlotte. Miranda’s life was pretty much on track—that is, until she had a baby and watched her organized, fabulous existence swiftly unravel, leaving her little time even to brush her teeth. For real-life female lawyers, and millions of working moms in other high-pressure fields, balancing work and family may be the toughest part of the job. Law firms are starting to recognize the hard choices their female attorneys face. In this, our inaugural Working Mother & Flex-Time Lawyers Best Law Firms for Women list, we salute those firms with groundbreaking programs to help women strike a better work/life balance and climb to the top. Our winning firms have taken the lead in implementing penalty-free flex schedules and mentoring, networking and leadership programs. Despite these advances, there’s still work to be done. Though almost half of law school grads over the past 15 years have been women, they make up only 16 percent of equity partners (those who share in a firm’s profits). The good news is that our winning law firms prove that a dramatic shift in thinking, as well as in policies that benefit women, is under way and gaining momentum. Miranda would be proud. Though derided by critics, this newly minted genre had two notable features: broader narratives within which sex occurred, and an insistent focus on the visual display of male pleasure. Plotting Sex claims that, by embedding sex within a story, sex itself takes on narrative qualities. To support this claim, it teases out small shifts in the twentieth century’s episteme that collectively contributed to the early 1970s emergence of what it terms pornography’s performatistic screen, or the base, plotted structure of bodily performance and engagement underpinning sexual displays as enacted over time in orgasmically-oriented hard core film. This project starts with the twin Foucaultian poles of law and “human sciences” as represented by the metonyms of American obscenity jurisprudence and sexology, finding in both a late 1960s pivot to issues of social construction and utility as tethered to narrative.
