On behalf of my administration and City Council I am proud to announce the arrival of our traditional festival. Welcome to the 24th Annual Unity Days! Unity Days is an event where the community comes together to enjoy long-time friends, food and family activities.

Everyone will enjoy the rides and games and of course the wonderful food selections from area restaurants. Those that enjoy a little competition can partake in the international bocce tournament. For your enjoyment we will have live music daily.

Saturday evening at dusk there will be a fi rework display guaranteed to impress. On Sunday be sure to grab a spot on Mayfi eld Road to watch the parade which will begin at 1:00 p.m. from Mayland Shopping Center and travel to Golden Gate Plaza.

An enormous gratitude of thanks is extended to the city employees, commission members and a host of volunteers whose endless hours of work help make the event possible. We also appreciate the continued generous support from festival sponsors and local vendors. Thank you to our community who support the festival year after year. All the efforts and support help make the event a true success!

HailingH from New York, from a place that produced coaching legends Vince Lombardi and Joe Paterno, and beingb known as a riverboat gambler, , former coach of the , will forever be rememberedr by fans for his gutsy call in the “” game played by the Kardiac Kids. However, Coach Sam,S who chose to stay in Cleveland because ‘this is where he wants to live’, has seen a lot during a lifetime ofo coaching across the world, beginning in the high school ranks in New York and Connecticut, and spanning alla the way to the NFL Europe. Even with the vast coaching resume, Clevelanders will most remember his relationshipr with and those Kardiac Kids, and overseeing his greatest accomplishment, the Inner CircleC – an anonymous support group to help players with substance abuse issues. While his overall record withw the Browns was 47-50, he was one of only four Cleveland Browns coaches to win the NFL Coach of the YearY award, once in 1979 & again in 1980. 22017017 CCitizensitizens ooff thethe YearYear Cecelia & David Paponetti The Citizen of the Year award is bestowed upon individuals to reward and recognize a noteworthy contribution to the community. The award will be presented on Sunday, June 25th, at 6:30 P.M. under the Main Tent.

AccomplishmentsA come from all angles and from all walks of life. Some are in the fore front, while others remainr planted in the background, recognition not being the motivating factor. Sometimes just the result is enough.e Sometimes, when the timing is right, your community has a family that is a perfect blend of both. TheT City of Mayfi eld Heights is honored to have that perfect blend with Cecelia and David Paponetti.

DaveD and Cecelia have been residents of this community for 50 plus years, raising their family ok fi ve children hereh and due to their civic accomplishments have made our community one that has prospered and grown. The Paponetti’sP began volunteering on the Oakville Park Committee, which ran from 1994 to 1999, transforming theth Oakville Park property into what you see today; a beautiful play area and still blossoming park.

FromF 2001 to 2013 Cecelia was an integral part of the Parks and Recreation Commission. She helped raise the bar on holiday parties, fund raising, and donation soliciting – gathering over 150 prizes per year as part of the Unity Days Prize Committee. She created the Taste of Italy fund raising dinner, an event that she cooked and baked for, an event that is still going strong today. While currently not on the committee, she still helps with bakery items for the event, and does so with perfect precision that would rival any professional. With all her help and the monies raised through her efforts, we have seen our parks go to the next level.

Like every good spouse, Dave has always been in lock step with Cecelia, and while not an actual commission member, our events would not have ran as well as they did without his precision craftsmanship and cooking acumen. Dave also has been behind the scenes making sure that the parade during Unity Days goes off without a hitch, acting as one of the Parade Marshals for years.

In addition to all the exceptional additions to the City of Mayfi eld Heights, the Paponetti’s also helped the students of Mayfi eld enjoy prom festivities by being a part of the After Prom Committee; building sets, creating fun events and ensuring patrons were safe and having fun.

Like all accomplishments, those that made them come to fruition often go unnoticed. In the Paponetti’s case, with all they have done, it would be an impossible task.
