Newsletter 50 Autumn 2007 Cylchlythyr 50 Hydref 2007 Carmarthen in the Springtime The Spring meeting in 2007 was held on on 12 May in Carmarthen. The members assembled in Heol Awst chapel at 10.30, and after a brief Annual General Meeting at 11.00 were treated to a fine, concise illustrated lecture on ‘Carmarthen - Great Centre of Nonconformity’ by Thomas Lloyd. Mr Lloyd is a specialist on the buildings of South West Wales, and one of the editors of the recent ‘Pevsner’ architectural guides to Pembrokeshire and to Carmarthenshire and Ceredigion. This was followed by a video of Heol Awst Chapel with an introduction and commentary by the minister, the Rev. J. Towyn Jones. For more than The wine glass pulpit at Heol Awst forty years in the nineteenth century, the minister of Heol Awst had also been principal of the Academy next door, with which the chapel building was linked. After lunch at the nearby Falcon Hotel we proceeded on our customary tour of the chapels within easy walking distance, visiting the Welsh Presbyterian Heol Dǒr, the Baptist Tabernacl and the English Presbyterian Zion. We then moved on to Tabernacle Baptist Chapel view the site of the former Quaker Meeting House, the former Unitarian chapel Parc y Felfed, and the burial ground of Ebenezer, once a Welsh Wesleyan chapel. A new Methodist chapel now stands nearby. The tour ended at about 4.30 with tea. Capel AGM 2007 Minutes of the Annual General build in the traditional TinTabernacle Meeting style. Sigh, Heart, Break not', composed by Kate A. Mellersh[?] to words by [John Byrne Leicester Warren,] 3rd Baron de Tabley (1835-95). A selection of printed books from a particularly extensive collection of material relating to folk-lore (Dept of Printed Books). The testator, whose volume The Lakes of Wales, published in 1931, is now difficult to obtain, was at one time a regular visitor to the Readers Room and this bequest is a reflection of his esteem for the Library. Apart from a number of books entirely devoted to folk-lore there are also several local histories, long since out of print, which contain much pertinent material for the folklorist. Most of the collection has considerably enriched the Duplicates Section, more especially because they were originally issued in very small editions and copies are now almost impossible to acquire.

Donate £1 to “Save a Pediment in Peril” campaign has been launched to raise the £15,000 needed to save one of Wales’s most important historic chapels. The aim is to hit the target so that renovation work on the pediment can be completed in line with current plans to repair the roof. eniel Chapel is located at the southern gateway of the planned town of Tremadog. PIts innovative gable front and auditorium plan proved highly influential in the evo- lution of Welsh chapel design whilst its pedimented portico with Tuscan columns has made it one of Wales’ most iconic chapels. Tremadog was the project of London entre- preneur, William Madocks, who bought the marsh land in 1798 and envisioned it as a settlement on the trade route between London and Ireland. The Calvinistic Methodist chapel was finished in 1810, and when enlarged in 1849 to the original designs, it was possibly the most iconic chapel in Wales, its temple front loosely based on Inigo Jones’ St Paul’s, Covent Garden. Madocks himself was not a dissenter but allowed the build- ing of so large a chapel, observing that “the church is built on rocks, the chapel is built on sand.” 136,000 of grants have provided the funds needed to carry out most of the reno- £vation to the roof, but £15,000 are still needed to finish paying for the vital process of repairing the pediment.

(^apel CYMDEITHAS TREFTADAETH Y CAPELI THE CHAPELS HERITAGE SOCIETY CYLCHLYTHYR 38 HYDREF 2001 NEWSLETTER AUTUMN 2001 News from the Royal Commission Last year CAPEL and the Royal Commission on Ancient and Historical Monuments of Wales signed a Heads of Agreement for cooperation in the study of chapels and chapel history. One of the points was that a report on chapels related work undertaken by the Royal Commission would appear regularly in the Capel Newsletter. The Chapels Recording Project Members will be aware of this project and indeed many will have contributed to it by photographing and recording information about chapels throughout Wales. We are most grateful to all those who gave such unstinting and generous support. The first stage of the project was to identify and create basic records for as many Nonconformist chapels and Sunday schools as possible and this has largely been achieved. The database now contains over 8000 records of buildings, more than 2000 more than previous estimates of this stock of building. The results may be viewed on the Royal Commission's web-site at www.rcahmw.org.uk where they are incorporated in CARN, the database for archaeology and historical buildings in Wales. A more detailed listing is being prepared for the web. This will tabulate chapels and Sunday schools by pre-1974 county, giving details of dates, architects etc. Other data will be added later. At present Ceredigion / Cardiganshire is available although as yet no details of architects are provided. It is our intention to add further counties in the near future. Many of the dates and details of architect or builder will be drawn from the companion database compiled by the Board of Celtic Studies with their kind permission.
