In 2013, project partners decided to focus on helping community members with chronic illness (CI) improve their self-care. In 2016, we received a grant from the National Institutes of Health to develop and implement a randomized controlled intervention trial of a program with 200 members of the Apsáalooke community. The resulting program is titled Báa nnilah, which translates to advice or instructions for life that are received from others. The program method is centered on Crow cultural strengths and includes 7 group meetings (gatherings) led by community members (mentors) who are doing well managing their CI. The program encourages and supports Apsáalooke people with CIs to take positive steps to manage their illness, to support each other, and to be an advocate for themselves to improve their health while staying true to Apsáalooke traditions and values. The different panel presenters will provide an overview of the Báa nnilah program and describe the specific parts of the program for which they are responsible including participant recruitment and retention into the program, development of program content such as working in a positive manner with healthcare providers, mentor training and support, and program evaluation. One important preparatory aspect of the program is to provide opportunities for scholars to share their research and creative projects at regional & national conferences such as today. Researchers since have taken evolutionary theory to new realms of understanding, explaining everything from the vast diversity of organismal forms to how cancer develops and spreads within the human body. The MSU Macroevolution Lab aims to carry the torch of evolutionary theory to better understand our world. Our research applies computational methods to test hypotheses concerning cellular, genomic, organismal, and cultural evolution.     ~ ~ WISCONSIN DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES A Survey of Rare and Endangered Mayflies of Selected RESEARCH Rivers of Wisconsin by Richard A. Lillie REPORT110 Bureau of Research, Monona December 1995 ~ Abstract The mayfly fauna of 25 rivers and streams in Wisconsin were surveyed during 1991-93 to document the temporal and spatial occurrence patterns of two state endangered mayflies, Acantha­ metropus pecatonica and Anepeorus simplex. Both species are candidates under review for addition to the federal List of Endang­ ered and Threatened Wildlife. Based on previous records of occur­ rence in Wisconsin, sampling was conducted during the period May-July using a combination of sampling methods, including dredges, air-lift pumps, kick-nets, and hand-picking of substrates. No specimens of Anepeorus simplex were collected. Three specimens (nymphs or larvae) of Acanthametropus pecatonica were found in the Black River, one nymph was collected from the lower Wisconsin River, and a partial exuviae was collected from the Chippewa River. Homoeoneuria ammophila was recorded from Wisconsin waters for the first time from the Black River and Sugar River. New site distribution records for the following Wiscon­ sin special concern species include: Macdunnoa persimplex, Metretopus borealis, Paracloeodes minutus, Parameletus chelifer, Pentagenia vittigera, Cercobrachys sp., and Pseudiron centra/is. Collection of many of the aforementioned species from large rivers appears to be dependent upon sampling sand-bottomed substrates at frequent intervals, as several species were relatively abundant during only very short time spans. Most species were associated with sand substrates in water < 2 m deep. Acantha­ metropus pecatonica and Anepeorus simplex should continue to be listed as endangered for state purposes and receive a biological rarity ranking of critically imperiled (S1 ranking), and both species should be considered as candidates proposed for listing as endangered or threatened as defined by the Endangered Species Act.

ABSTRACT. A taxonomic key for the genera of Elmidae (Coleoptera, Byrrhoidea) occurring in Goiás State, Brazil, including new records and distributional notes. Despite their great diversity and high abundance in Neotropical aquatic environments, the fauna of Elmidae remains practically unknown in some areas and even entire biomes in this region. In this work we bring, for the first time, faunistic data for the Elmidae of central Brazil. The aim of this work was to inventory the Elmidae fauna in central, southwestern and southeastern Goiás State, Brazil and to produce a taxonomic key, at genus level, for adults from the studied region. The taxonomic key presented herein offers means for the identification of all the 13 genera known to occur in Goiás, 11 of them being new records for the State. Moreover, the number of named species registered for Goiás increased from one to nine. KEYWORDS. Cerrado biome; Insecta; Neotropics; Riffle beetles.

    2016 STUDENT RESEARCH CELEBRATION GRADUATE ABSTRACTS *Sorted by Student Major* COLLEGE OF AGRICULTURE Madison Hoffman: Animal & Range Sciences Mentor: Emily Glunk, Megan Van Emon -- Animal & Range Sciences Evaluating Hay Feeding Methods on Heifer Performance, Hay Waste, and Economics The objective of this project was to compare the Cattle System by LS feeder, a new feeder on the market, to a popular alternative, a cone feeder. Our hypothesis was that due to the design of the new Cattle System feeder, this treatment would result in decreased hay waste compared to the traditional cone feeder. This study was a replicated crossover design, with four periods lasting five days each. A single large round bale (50/50 legume grass mixture) was provided to each pen every 5 days. Bales were individually weighed prior to feeding. Each feeder was placed on concrete in separate pens for ease of hay waste collection. Heifers had ad libitum access to water and minerals throughout the duration of the trial. Measurements taken included beginning heifer weights and final heifer weights, weight of hay waste, beginning bale weight, and final bale weight. Hay was weighed on day 1 of each period before being placed into the feeders, and hay orts was collected at the end of each five day period to calculate period pen intake. Hay waste was defined as any hay outside the feeder that had not been weighed, and was collected on days three and five of each period. Hay core samples were collected from each bale to ensure uniformity and will be sent to a commercial lab to determine forage quality.

Fossil data currently exist for one third of the Swedish red-listed beetle species. All the red-list conservation classes are represented in the fossil record, which may allow for comparative studies. We found significantly different representations in the fossil records among taxonomic groups and ecological traits, which may depend on the fossil depositional and sampling environments and variation in how difficultspecies are to identify.

SGMA seeks to achieve sustainability, which is defined as the absence of several undesirable results, including “depletions of interconnected surface water that have significant and unreasonable adverse impacts on beneficial users of surface water” (Water Code §10721). The Nature Conservancy (TNC) is a science-based, nonprofit organization with a mission to conserve the lands and waters on which all life depends. Like humans, plants and animals often rely on groundwater for survival, which is why TNC helped develop, and is now helping to implement, SGMA. Earlier this year, we launched the Groundwater Resource Hub, which is an online resource intended to help make it easier and cheaper to address environmental requirements under SGMA. As a first step in addressing when depletions might have an adverse impact, The Nature Conservancy recommends identifying the beneficial users of surface water, which include environmental users. This is a critical step, as it is impossible to define “significant and unreasonable adverse impacts” without knowing what is being impacted. To make this easy, we are providing this letter and the accompanying documents as the best available science on the freshwater species within the boundary of your groundwater sustainability agency (GSA).
