Society for Helpless Children , Sunsari, Year Report 2005

Introduction: Society for Helpless Children established in September 12, 2003 is running in the third year. It is located in Dharan city in the country Nepal. It is being operated by the 9 board members as a volunteer and has 12 paid members at present. It also has 25 life time members. Society for Helpless Children is basically focused in supporting the children Who do not have their parents (either mother or father or both; even if a child has one of them but unable to foster him or her). Who are differently able than the normal children.

We have reached up to such children with the help of three projects already in existence. The three projects are 1. Shree Saraswati Orphanage, Dharan 2. Helpless Children Welfare Mission, / Duhabi 3. Himalaya Mahayan Dichhen Chyonling Gumba, Dharan

We are supporting these children basically in the following headings: Nutritious Food (milk, fruits, eggs etc) Clothes, Education (admn. fees, monthly & exams fees; tutors in English, Math, Science, Computer) Stationery items, Health Insurance (in BPKIHS, Dharan), Medical support, Vocational training, Washing materials (soap, hair oil and brush etc.)

Apart from these direct supports, children are being supported with other indirect supports like: Renovation of old rooms in orphanage, Painting for the building, Construction of boundary walls, Water reservoir and sanitation facility, Sewing machines, Computers, Fuel (LP gas), Fridge etc, Support in school building construction, Creation of playground, etc

Home mothers, guards and a nurse are also managed in orphanages. 1 Year Report 2005 Society for Helpless Children, Dharan, Nepal

We are extending our supports to the 52 needy children through three different projects

And the office in Dharan, namely "Society for Helpless Children", manages the three projects, for the headings mentioned above. And its major source of fund is “Stichting Children’s Homes Dharan, Holland”. A small contribution is made from its lifetime members and general members also.

Additionally on the support of Stichting Children’s Homes Dharan, Holland, we have finished the construction of a new building in Duhabi and it was recently inaugurated by Mr. Henk Hooghuis, Chairman, Stichting Children's Homes Dharan, Amsterdam, The Netherlands. The building is basically being constructed for the disabled children.

And to give it continuity, every year we update their record along with their height, weight, educational status, photograph etc

2 Year Report 2005 Society for Helpless Children, Dharan, Nepal 2) For the sponsor’s day (Feb 26), photos from our projects were sent to Holland; photos were basically focussed in the activities of the children. 3) Initially we were operating in two bank accounts which were at . One was the saving account (150100100 170 1001) for the project expenses and the next current account (150010100 420 0101) for the building expenses. Later as per recommendation of Mr Freek, (treasurer, stichting children’s homes Dharan, Amsterdam, the Netherlands) the two accounts at Himalayan banks were closed and a new account was opened in Standard Chartered (account no 01-1226274-01). This was done so as to have the fund transfer more quickly. 4) At the government level, SHC is directly concerned with ‘Ministry of women, children and social welfare’. So we registered our organization (SHC, Dharan) in the Social Welfare Council, , Nepal (SWC affiliation #: 17518). Now we are totally legalized and we are open to international NGOs. 5) BPKIHS, Dharan, a reputed teaching and service hospital of Nepal is tied up with few hospitals in the Netherlands so every month, student from there come at BPKIHS for approximate 2 months which is also a part of their education and during their visits they also visit our organization, know about us, and support us also. In due coarse, 7 abroad doctors took keen interest in our work and visited our three orphanages Saraswati home, Itahari & Children’s Home, Duhabi as well. Similarly Mr Sauren and his friends visited Gumba, Saraswati Home and Children’s Home, Duhabi during the month of December and supported our children with stuffs like sports materials, clothing, food stuffs etc 6) SHC was invited by different other organizations so we also visited the following places and gave our presence in the programs, seminars, and discussions related to children like : o CMSC (Complementary Minimum Standard for Care of Children) (Feb 1): the program was held at . A one day national level program related to discussion on minimum standards that any children homes should have to operate it. The program was represented by Mr Sansar Shrestha. o Program by ‘National Forum of Working Children’ at Dharan organized by Under Privilege Children Association (UPCA) in coordination with Save the Children, Norway. The program was related to the working children in the Eastern region of Nepal. It was represented by and Mr Manish Tamrakar and Mr Sansar Shrestha. o ‘Citizenship problem of orphans in Nepal’, program by SOS Children’s Village, Itahari & UPCA Nepal, at Itahari. It was represented by Mr Sudhir Tamrakar and Mr Sansar Shrestha. There is no legal provision in Nepal to provide citizenship to the orphans. However some have got and it’s mainly due to the personal risk taken by of some CDOs. Thus the program was mainly focussed in creating the pressure group and work towards to form the law to provide citizenship to the orphans in Nepal. o On the occasion of Lhosar festival, the greatest festival of Lamas, we were invited in Gumba so Miss Martine, Miss Yong Mi and Mr Manish Tamrakar and Mr Sansar Shrestha visited Gumba. o Visited the program organized by ‘District Education Office’ and ‘Seto Gurans’. The program basically focused in promoting supports to the children 3 Year Report 2005 Society for Helpless Children, Dharan, Nepal under 5 years of age. ‘Seto Gurans’ is basically working in the Early Childhood Development (ECD) sector. o Annual General Meeting of Shree Saraswati Orphanage was held during the month of December and in the program children were prized in the sectors like best disciplined, sports winner, best in studies, class first etc. We were also invited and Mr. Shyam Katwal, Chairman, SHC highlighted about our supports in the program. Mrs Tara Pradhan, Mr Sudhir Tamrakar and Mr Sansar Shrestha from SHC were also present in the program. o On December 24 th the Helpless Children Welfare Mission, Itahari had the Annual General Meeting. The meeting was represented by Mr. Sudhir Tamarkar and Mrs. Goma Tamrakar. However, we felt that the presence of any member from SHC was never expected in that program. 7) In the initiation of a field worker Mr Manish Tamrakar we tracked the blood group of 21 children from Duhabi orphanage. It was done in coordination with the Choudhary’s Hospital, a local hospital in Duhabi. Blood group of a person never changes and having information of it is very worthwhile for any individual throughout his/her life. 8) Account person (Mr Chandra Pradhan) was hired in SHC office in order to support office manager, Mr Sansar Shrestha in the accounting procedures. 9) Newsletter in our website ( www.kinderhuisnepal.nl ) is also important section for us to meet our goals and objectives. So we are also working in this section with great care. We promote the activities and expose the creations of our children through this section like we regularly publish the drawings from children, poems and stories and their feelings as well. 10) We believe in communication and co-operation so we are making our efforts to be in a network of similar fields by attending different programs, seminars, making formal and informal visits, inviting the related people into our organization and letting them know about or vision, structure and working procedures, organizing programs in co-ordination with multiple organizations, sharing the ideas and resources available (human and material both). 11) For the proper care of the children, to feed them with additional knowledge and make them aware of possible difficult situation in their life we organized 3 different programs in our projects during the year 2005 and they are: o One day HIV/AIDS orientation class : this class was conducted in Saraswati home on Aug 13 and in Children’s Home, Duhabi on Dec 31, 05. We attended the burial ceremony of Late Tom Hughes on February 10, at Dharan. The organization run by him is named as ‘HOUSE’, where people staying there are his sons, daughters in law, grand-sons, grand-daughters and so on. 21. In raining season, mosquito bits are major problem for all. So Itahari, Duhabi and Saraswati children were suffering from mosquito bits. Temporarily we solved the problem by purchasing the electric mosquito mat. And later the permanent solution was done by fixing the nets at windows and doors. 22. Provided the sample routine of nutritious food to Duhabi Home (like Sunday: eggs; Monday: milk; Tuesday: fruits etc) so that the duhabi home may go in a structured way. 23. In the absence of a nurse in itahari and duhabi, Mr. Manish as a field worker ocasionally reminded the children for maintaining their cleanliness and tidyness, checked the teeth and nails of the children from all the projects etc 24. The table below shows the percentage of passed and failed students out of students who apeared in their final exams in the year 2005

Total % projects passed Failed result to come examinees passed Saraswati 15 12 3 0 80.00 Itahari 13 9 4 0 69.23 Duhabi 11 6 4 1 54.55 Total 39 27 11 1 69.23 % 100 69.23 28.21 2.56

The above table shows that the 69.23% of the total students who appeared the final examination have passed and next year we hope to get it increased more. Later the result of one student from Duhabi came and she failed. So the net % of passed students is 69.23. 25. In the monthly meeting of May Mr Sudhir Tamrakar highlighted the past activities of the NGO. How a single person handled the whole activities, and now the NGO has a team of 14 paid members and 9 volunteers supported by a donor organization of Holland. He said that we have definitely progressed in the past few years and we hope to serve more to the children in needs. 26. Can’t the children still staying in Itahari be served? On this question Shyam sir gave the answer like this “We have provided a well furnished building, managed a home mother and a guard to look after all activities of children, managed tutors to support children in their education, provided nutritious food and other facilities like dining table for mass feeding and we will recently

7 Year Report 2005 Society for Helpless Children, Dharan, Nepal manage studying environment and other facilities also. We have managed all these sort of things for the children and we want all our children to use these facilities. If they stay away from duhabi orphanage, they will be prohibited from getting these sorts of arrangements. So we can see all the children who will stay in duhabi; May it be 21 or 28 or more than that.” 27. Conducted an orientation class for the children in duhabi. Topics covered during the orientation class were: ‘value of education in life’, ‘education is the key factor for being a successful person’, ‘value of moral responsibilities in life’, ‘value of discipline in life’. Mr Shyam Bahadur Katwal and Mr Sansar Shrestha conducted this session in presence of Gita Gautam in Duhabi. 28. On the discussion in the meeting of June on the topic “ Alternatives for those who are not good in academic education ” our tutor gave different views like: o They have to give more time in their education. They should be loaded with more tasks. o We have to give them more home works in the summer vacation. o Spending on them is not fruitful o Let’s give them some kind of vocational training so that they could live their earnings by themselves. Some children are interested in the education but they are mentally slow like Bimala and Sima from Saraswati Orphanage. o Let’s give them trainings like art, crafts, making dolls, computer education, paper crafts, beautician training, cutting and knitting, hair cutting, electrician training, motor bike maintenance, plumbing, wood furniture training, electronics maintenance training etc. 29. The board-members of our society visited Duhabi to see the building and to see the children over there. During the visit, Mr. Shyam Katwal, Salma Joshi, Tara Pradhan, Kapesh Agarwal, Sudhir Tamrakar were present. That morning, we provided playing items to the children. And they were very happy to receive those indoor game items. 30. Children from Saraswati and Duhabi orphanage were shown the ‘Meena cartoon’. The serial cartoon put forward by UNICEF which basically focuses on girls education, equal rights to a son & a daughter, to tackle with small problems faced in life, raise voice against the dowry system, focuses on cleanliness for sound health, to stop the childhood marriage, a good education to a girl can bring great changes, and some points on HIV/AIDS. 31. Visitors from abroad remember our children by sending cards, balloons, key rings etc. they never forget to ask about children in mails also. So children have also created remembrance card in the name of the following visitors Mr. Hans Corbeek, Miss Martine & Yong Mi, Mr. Eric & Mrs. Tabitha, Miss Clara, Mrs. Jennifer, Mr. Michiel and Mr. Henk & Mrs. Bimala. This month Mr. Henk and Mrs. Bimala were here in Dharan. and Mr. Henk attended the meeting in various places like, SOS children village, Upakar Orphanage, ICT-Itahari, HCWM, SHC, Shree Saraswati Orphanage, with Gumba members 34. Our support to the Children's Home, Duhabi was published in the National Daily dated December 6, 05 35. Shyam sir and Sudhir dai are invited to Holland in the presentation program which is going to be organized during January and February, 06. So they are in visit to Kathmandu for processing works like visa confirmation, tickets confirmation etc 36. We made an attempt to create calendar 2006 but the work was not satisfied. It may be due to insufficient experience in this work. 37. Due to maoist attach, travelling stopped, schools closed, markets closed, worse political condition we have delayed much in our works and we feel that the effectiveness in our work had decreased. This caused great loss in the education sector also. In spite of occasional bands educational sectors, tutors never left their classes in the projects. They continued the children tuition classes. 38. We organize the monthly meeting every Friday or Saturday of the first week of the next month. In the meeting we collect reports from paid members, we discuss the monthly activities of the children and children homes and also discuss about the activities to be done in the coming month. We also pay the salary to paid members according to their working hour sheet. 39. We have suffered a lot in absence of the field worker from the month of august. So we have felt difficulties in performing our project activities. However the friendly ness and supportive attitude and behaviour of the SHC board members, our partner organization and that of the paid members has made our work easy. 40. Created an official e-mail address for the communication purpose. The email address is [email protected] later we updated our email address to the new one like this [email protected] 41. Total 9 meeting of Board of Directors were held during the year 2005. 42. Total amount spent in ngo office shc under the various headings are as follows : Headings Amount spent o taveling 18,661 o internet and phone 23,591.53 o salary 153,460 o assets 4,219 o stationery 11,655.21 o rent & electricity 23,840 o miscellanous expenses 33,883 o program expenses 15,476 o corrections -7,710.12 o total 277,075.62 Shree Saraswati Orphanage Dharan, Nepal 9 Year Report 2005 Society for Helpless Children, Dharan, Nepal

1. Shree Saraswati Orphanage was established 14 years earlier and it is located in Dharan – 3, Nepal. It is directed by 17 board members and 4 paid members. There are 17 children at present. 2. Mr. Tirtha raj rai is the chairman of Shree Saraswati Orphanage 3. Name of 17 Children (boys: 9; girls: 9) who are currently staying are boys I. Mr. Shyam Saraswati II. Mr. Surendra Saraswati III. Mr. Aitaraj IV. Mr. Manoj V. Mr. Ramesh VI. Mr. Mahesh VII. Mr. Umesh VIII. Mr. Dinesh IX. Mr. Ram

girls I. Miss Renuka II. Miss bimala III. Miss Sangita IV. Miss Seema V. Miss Asha VI. Miss Sabita VII. Miss Binita VIII. Miss Sushma IX. Miss Anita (Durga) 4. A new classroom was built in the Saraswati home and February month onwards, children are shifted from office room to the new ones. The new classroom was built by Mr. Yog Raj Maskey, Dharan. The previous class is now a library room and the office of the secretary (Purna sir's room) 5. Now a day, we decided to provide children magazine called “MUNA” to Saraswati children 6. Manoj, Sangita and Sima were treated by Mr.s Jeniffer also previously. We have come to know that she also suggested that they are to be treated individually. They need regular individual counselling. Mr. Bharat also came to the same conclusion after his study in them for a number of years. 7. It is difficult for Sangita, Manoj and Sima to perform the mental tasks. So they can be managed to perform the physical tasks like they can be trained in any sector and can work as a supporter and not as a head. 8. Mr. Manoj has the most expenses (approx. Rs. 500 per month) in comparison to the other children in the orphanage. Manoj is the best among others students in his school, mentally retarded school. In this school they provide the behavioural education like keeping the house and surrounding clean, properly arranging the clothes and other materials in the room, keeping things in the right place, solving simple puzzles, purchasing things 10 Year Report 2005 Society for Helpless Children, Dharan, Nepal from the market, communicating with each other and with normal people etc. Mr. Purna says that he is good at purchasing but he fails to recognize money. Exactly can’t calculate the return amount also. All the physical work can be done by him properly but he fails when there needs his mental ability. He can receive telephone calls and asks the caller to wait till he calls the concerned person. And if he does not find, tells him to call back again after a while. He does this in the school when he finds the telephone ringing for a long period of time. So in the school he has learnt what he had to learn and now onwards he will not benefit from the school adds Mr. Purna about Manoj. And we hope that in the open world after going out from the orphanage, he cannot live his earning alone. So the orphanage should also think about his forthcoming days. Or the orphanage can keep him there as an employee for doing any kind of physical work in the orphanage like we see Manoj is always busy doing some small works like watering plants, cleaning the fallen leaves, and fixing petty tasks etc. 9. The children from Saraswati home visited circus. There children enjoyed much by playing rotating swing, some played horse riding, some car driving, they also saw the magic and had an ice-cream and fully enjoyed the day, 10. Yoga class in the Shree Saraswati Orphanage was started from December 31, 05. Every Saturday Mr.. Nabin Kafle visits the orphanage and teaches physical yoga to children over there for two hours from 7 am. Mr. Kafle is also engaged in BPKIHS as a yoga specialist in Life Style Clinic. 11. Construction work of Boundary walls at Saraswati home is done. Total length of it is 205 ft, the height of wall is 7 feet (including base) and width is 10 inches at the top. The total cost amounted to NRs. 113,856.62 12. Children who are not good at academic sectors will always lag behind if nothing is thought for them so in order to make them sustainable and self dependent some occupational trainings are to be given so this year as a part of vocational training 6 children from Saraswati home are provided with 1 month ‘Sewing and Cutting Training’ by Dobhan Sewing and Cutting Training Center, Dharan. During the program 15 items were taught. 13. With a view to involve our children in different activities at the outer level 4 children from Saraswati Home were taken to participate in the drawing competition organized by the REIYUKAI 19 th Branch Dharan. The competition was held in the city level. 14. The following children were adopted from Saraswati Home by people from outside : Mr. Rajesh Saraswati Mr. Saroj Saraswati,

15. The following children are the new intakes in Saraswati Home Mahesh, Umesh, and Dinesh

11 Year Report 2005 Society for Helpless Children, Dharan, Nepal 16. Plantation has been done in some parts of bare land of the Saraswati Orphanage. Initially the broom plants have been planted and later they are went for seeds and other seasonal plants. 17. Saraswati children are still continuing the trend of ‘party day star prize’ started by Mr.s Jennifer (volunteer, Peace Corps). Each individual child is prized according to the stars they receive, by teachers in a month, as per the activities they perform. 18. Similarly Sangita Saraswati, she is still unaware of her physical growth. Though she is mentally not normal, she looks is beautiful. And she is sometimes prone towards some kind of misbehavior from external males like physical touch, wrong looks towards her, dirty talks etc. She cannot think of being attacked; and cannot protect herself from such attacks. 19. Mr.. Purna Phuyal, office secretary of Saraswati was looking weak. He went to hospital many times during the month of June but also attended the office. He also fainted many times in market. 20. Children from Saraswati orphanage were taken to the Pindeshwor temple leaded by Mr. Manish TaMr.akar 21. The insurance facility of 18 existing children and 4 staffs (Mr Purna, Mr Khyamu, Miss Sarita and mrs Urmila) of Saraswati Orphanage have been renewed. 22. Renowned actors and actress of Nepali film industry visited the Saraswati orphanage on July 12. They had a program in Dharan and wanted to meet with Saraswati children. So they made visit and talked with children for about half an hour. 23. Made contract with the chairman about the budget for the year 2005 amounting to Nrs 409,640. 24. total amount spent in Saraswati Home under the various headings are as follows: headings amount spent o food 15,249 o party day 2,000 o medicine 4,287.75 o health insurance 12,710 o clothes 8,745 o edn & stationery 19,105 o washing 6,770 o gas refilling 15,675 o salary 163,800 o miscellaneous exp 102,574 o total 350,915.75

Before Sita Baral started her duties in Children’s Home, Duhabi, she was provided a 15 days training on ‘home mother skills’. The training was provided to her through SOS Children’s Village, Itahari. During the training period, her staying and feeding cost were met by SOS Children’s Village, Itahari. 11. The following Inventory materials were managed in Duhabi Home like computer, fridge, curtains, bed sheet/covers, pillows, mattress, blankets, kitchen rack, step beds, cupboards, iron, cooker, gas, sports materials, ceiling fan, wall clock, white board, plastic tank/water reservoir, desk bench etc. There are stills more things in budget to purchase and it is in process. 12. During the initial days, it was quite awkward to deal with Gita Gautam. We faced enough problems even in very small matters. However we have found few changes in Gita Gautam’s concept of handling the organization. We can say that it is the result of

13 Year Report 2005 Society for Helpless Children, Dharan, Nepal our patience for years. But we are not sure whether she goes on improving in the same way. 13. Children from Duhabi/Itahari never came in-front of a visitor; rather they ran away, some children hide under the beds and some back of cupboard. They were seen laying on the open floor, slept on the bench of a classroom, hands and legs were not clean, had their meal on the improper place; but these days, children are coming in track, we seen them on their own bed, uses desk and bench of the classroom for reading, takes their meal on the dining table and of course do not run away when they see any new visitor. Their behaviours have changed and have progressed in few of their activities and we hope that in short period of time they will be able to grasp what they will be taught. 14. Miss Malika Rai started to go to Duhabi from Itahari to teach children. However Mr Sushil Choubey denied going there and Mr Sushil Giri replaced him at Duhabi. 15. Mrs Ratna Prasai as a nurse, generally checked the children for cleanliness of cloth, gave advice on personal grooming, one should take good care of individual hygiene, took children to the hospital etc. i. Duhabi building is completed and children from Itahari have shifted over there from the month of May. There are altogether 21 children in Duhabi Orphanage 16. The names of the 21 children listed below are given by Gita Gautam. And they are the children who stayed at Duhabi Orphanage from the month of May . I. Lushi II. Jayanti III. Shila IV. Arun V. Shambhu VI. Raju VII. Kailash VIII. Chandra IX. Toyaj X. Bhola XI. Bipana XII. Dipesh XIII. Santosh XIV. Hemant/Pappu XV. Bimal XVI. Reju XVII. Sapana XVIII. Sita (jr.) XIX. Arbin XX. Rekha XXI. Ambika/ Arjina

17. And the following 8 children will stay in Itahari Ashram I. Ravi II. Brinjali III. Lichen 14 Year Report 2005 Society for Helpless Children, Dharan, Nepal IV. Laxmi V. Sabita VI. Sita (sr.) VII. Mandira VIII. Kaushila

18. The following children are studying in govt. school in Duhabi . Bimal Pappu/Hemant Rekha Jayanti Santosh Dipesh Sapana Sita Ambika/Arjina Shila Arun Chandra

19. The following children are studying in the boarding school in Duhabi . I. Reju II. Bipana III. Arbin IV. Lushi V. The following students are studying in itahari schools: VI. Shambhu VII. Raju VIII. Kailash IX. Bhola Note: i. Out of 21 students, 20 are admitted in schools and 1 is too young to go to school. And out of 20 children, 12 are admitted in govt. Schools (Duhabi), 4 in boarding schools (Duhabi), and 4 in Itahari schools.

20. Itahari orphanage was not managed well and we do not want to repeat the same process in Duhabi. We are focused towards better management in duhabi and we want whole activities to be performed in a systematic manner and in an organized way. For that Gita Gautam has to change her concept of working. And this is the difficult most things to do for any one who knows her. But we are trying well from our side. And we take that the construction of duhabi building also as one of the attempts to change her. 21. Gita Gautam has lifted children from the street; somehow the children have got the better place. But we say that much is not enough, we are trying to raise her standard. And for that she should herself be ready first of all. 22. Mr Choubey says, “Lets give them the technical training also. I love them, provide them chocolates to motivate them again after if they don’t come in track, what to do? 15 Year Report 2005 Society for Helpless Children, Dharan, Nepal Stick! Stick is the solution, but I don’t like to use the stick. And for how long? After the use of stick, they’ll be ok for 8-10 days and again same manner. So it’s not easy to treat Itahari children. Anyway I am still trying to bring them in discipline”. 23. Gita Gautam should not use children as the source of income (like singing and dancing of the children plays the major role in bringing the fund in Itahari Ashram) rather those activities should be developed as the extra-curricular activities of the children. 24. Children from Duhabi frequently visited Itahari but later they were controlled. If they want they can visit in holidays and in some special occasions. 25. The procedure of giving and clearing amount to Gita Gautam is coming in track. She now uses demand form if she requires the monthly budget 26. Sita Gautam was appointed as a cook in Duhabi Orphanage. Unfortunately she could not continue there for even a month. Rather she ran away by taking away a child in an Orphanage named Toyaj (her own son, previously not known officially). She was trying to hand over the child to marwadi family for a certain amount with the help of third person in Itahari. Later they were found and now Toyaj is with Gita Gautam. 27. The cook (Sita Gautam) stayed in some others house as a helper and Toyaj with Gita Gautam in Itahari Orphanage. The marwadi family who was supposed to adopt Toyaj denied adopting him. They did not want to go through the legal process. So we have come to know that the child would not be treated as a son rather he would be treated as slave in his later life by the marwadi family if he had been taken by them. 28. Most of the children in Duhabi orphanage had the habit of giving straight answers, going out of the orphanage without telling to the concerned person like home mother and now these habits are improving in the duhabi children. 29. The Nepalese law can secure the adopted child. On a free consent of a child together with that of an Orphanage the other family can adopt the child. The local committee (ward) provides the reference letter stating that the child is an orphan and staying in the Orphanage. The letter is then taken to the municipality to provide legality to all the documents. And the letter should be registered to the office of the property controller (mal pot office), where the person who adopts the child agrees on a legal document to mention his heir as the adopted child. Then only the family can be said that he has adopted a child. This is a safe process and can secure a child’s future. By doing this a child cannot be misused and he/she can fight for his/her rights if anything wrong happens by the family with him. After adoption we can check whether the child is being properly cared or not. If not then on the basis of above documents, the family can be protested and called up to the court to secure the child’s future. 30. Intake in duhabi home And Miss Bipana Pokhrel was accepted by Duhabi Home. Gita Gautam made some changes in the placement children in duhabi like after the death of Mr Chandra Gautam (Sep 17), Miss Kaushila is placed and in place of Mr Bhola, Mr Devendra Gautam is placed. So the number of children in duhabi is not changed but only few children are exchanged by her. 31. Made contract with the Chairman about the budget for the year 2005 amounting to Nrs 407,440. 32. total amount spent in Children's Home, Itahari/Duhabi under the various headings are as follows : headings amount spent 16 Year Report 2005 Society for Helpless Children, Dharan, Nepal washing 11,438.00 education & stationery 13,405.00 health insurance 0 medicine 7,760.80 nutritious food 11,306 clothing 7,741.00 gas refill 6,900 salary 104,860 misc/Inventory/proj. exp 203,881.75 total 367,292.55

Other reports from Gumba: 5. New Gumba teacher started his teachings from 2 nd week of February. 6. Mr Binod, a tutor at Himalya Gumba was teaching English to students at Gumba and March month onwards he started Math class also. Math class is started so that the students can also face the daily mathematical problems also because children staying there do not go to school to learn these sorts of things. They basically stay in Gumba in order to learn the lama education only. So these days English and math classes run parallel three days a week. 7. In spite of poor educational background, students from Gumba have shown the admirable result in English. And this may be due to their deep interest for acquiring knowledge in English and their hard working nature. 8. Children from Gumba are much interested to learn whatever they are being taught. Like they are eager to learn English, they show good interest in math also. They are doing much better in the computer subject as well. They practice during off hours also and they ask enough questions with Mr Binod and Miss Ranjisha in English, math and in computer. This shows that they are crave to acquire knowledge. And they are utilizing their off time in a better way by preparing themselves for the next day class. They have shown good performance in drawings and sports as well. We feel that the Gumba committee should take good care of these students so as to maintain the same level in those students. Not only the members from SHC, rather the committee members of Gumba should also try to be frequently in touch and manage the students’ needs from other sources. 18 Year Report 2005 Society for Helpless Children, Dharan, Nepal 9. Mr. Lakpa Lama is not feeling well these days. He has a pain in his leg. However he is in Yoga practice also. 10. On June, Mr. Lakpa Lama visited to acupuncture doctor for treatment. He has pain in his leg and neck now a day; he is using some additional medicines. 11. The health condition of Lakpa Lama is same no change at all. He has been taking medicine on a regular basis. He is suffering from high blood pressure, bone problem, sugar. 12. We have been providing medical supports to father Lakpa Lama from the past few years. 13. Children from Gumba are able to communicate in English and they can also solve daily life mathematical problems. 14. Our supports to Gumba were not seen in their organization’s list so this year onwards the Gumba is going through the organization procedure and keeping record of our supports. So that our contribution would be enlisted in Gumba’s next year report. 15. Sources of payment to the Lama teacher goes here like this. The Lama teacher had accepted the contract that for the first three months he would be paid NRs. 4000 pm and then NRs. 7000 pm. So they have currently managed NRs. 4000 pm. The sources of his salary is as follows: Gumba committee: NRs. 1000 Nepal Sherpa committee: NRs. 1000 Students studying in Gumba: NRs. 2000 16. They have also said that the current sources are very weak and requested to support much so that the same Lama teacher could continue longer. However we are still unable to fix the salary of the lama teacher. 17. Children from Gumba went to Buddha Gaya Bihar on during the month of January, 2005 to attend their conference about the Buddha preaching. 18. Mr. Pasang is back again after two months of long period in February. Finally Ani and Mr. Lakpa Lama agreed on keeping Pasang on several requests of the board members and our side as well. Mr. Pasang Tamang has submitted the written document approved by his parents and the respected people of their society. Now he is abide by rules and regulations of Gumba more strictly. Gumba took him back from February 22 nd . Mr Pasang, who had run away and again was managed in the Gumba, is performing better. He respects the elders and cares the younger ones. His activities are better and remarkable these days. 19. We found that the most children in gumba do not attend computer classes and they miss English classes also so here are some reasons behind not attending more children in computer class and English class. As per Lakpa Lama and other students the main purpose of living in Gumba is for learning the Lama language. So they give first priority to Lama Language. After gaining little knowledge about Lama Language or able to write and read the Lama language then only all children are allowed to study other languages like English and computer. Without English knowledge, children do not understand computer. Because computer is based on English language. On other hand, some new children 19 Year Report 2005 Society for Helpless Children, Dharan, Nepal are admitted in Gumba regularly. So it is difficult for a computer teacher to teach computer to new children and old children at the same time in the same class. Because old children are far away in computer while newer ones are empty minded. Similarly about English language, most of children are reading Lama Language. After achieving little knowledge about Lama Language, they are moved towards English language. So, few children are learning English language in Gumba. The main purpose of children’s parent is to be learned in the Lama language first. So, respecting parents feeling, Mr. Lakpa Lama and his wife are focusing on Lama Language. 20. Made contract with the Chairman about the budget for the year 2005 amounting to Nrs 61,120. 21. total amount spent in Himalaya Gumba the various headings are as follows : headings amount spent medicine 4202 education & stationery 5382 salary 37440 correction -10 total 47014
