In a rare public appearance Mr. Walsh will attend the 8 pm screening of "Gentleman Jim," his 1942 film in which Errol Flynn portrays the boxing champion James J. Corbett. One of the giants of American filmdom, Walsh has worked in all genres — Westerns, gangster films, war pictures, adventure films, musicals — and with many of Hollywood's greatest stars — Victor McLaglen, Gloria Swanson, Douglas Fair­ banks, Mae West, James Cagney, Humphrey Bogart, Marlene Dietrich and Edward G. Robinson, to name just a few. It is ultimately as a director of action pictures that Walsh is best known and a growing body of critical opinion places him in the front rank with directors like Ford, Hawks, Curtiz and Wellman. Richard Schickel has called him "one of the best action directors...we've ever had" and British film critic Julian Fox has written: "Raoul Walsh, more than any other legendary figure from Hollywood's golden past, has truly lived up to the early cinema's reputation for 'action all the way'...." Walsh's penchant for action is not surprising considering he began his career more than 60 years ago as a stunt-rider in early "westerns" filmed in the New Jersey hills.

Background. In Executive Order 13934 of July 3, 2020 (Building and Rebuilding Monuments to American Heroes), I made it the policy of the United States to establish a statuary park named the National Garden of American Heroes (National Garden). To begin the process of building this new monument to our country’s greatness, I established the Interagency Task Force for Building and Rebuilding Monuments to American Heroes (Task Force) and directed its members to plan for construction of the National Garden. The Task Force has advised me it has completed the first phase of its work and is prepared to move forward. This order revises Executive Order 13934 and provides additional direction for the Task Force. Sec. 2. Purpose. The chronicles of our history show that America is a land of heroes. As I announced during my address at Mount Rushmore, the gates of a beautiful new garden will soon open to the public where the legends of America’s past will be remembered. The Thirties, according to Willard Van Dyke, Director of the Department of Film, will consist of 39 pictures, representing some of the richest creative talent in American cinema at a time that has been called "the dear, dead days not beyond recall." Two years ago the Museum presented The Thirties, U.S.A., Part I, covering the first half of the decade. The films being shown now as Part II were made from 1935 ^^ 193 '• Among the pictures to be shown are: Frank Capra's "Lost Horizon"; Paul Muni in "The Life of Emile Zola," the Story of a Northern Jew's lynching in the South; the great thriller "Night Must Fall," an adaptation of the Emlyn Williams play starring Robert Montgomery; and "The Good Earth," a spectacle film in black and white, from Pearl Buck's popular novel, for which Luise Rainer won her second Academy Award, with Paul Muni in the starring role. The latter part of the thirties was characterized by further achievements in the musical film, largely due to the talents of Fred Astaire, who with Ginger Rogers starred in "Top Hat," and "Shall We Dance," both of which are in the retrospective. The most important contributions to the annals of films made in the thirties was the series of "snowball" comedies Hollywood turned out at a time of grim, economic hardships.

The film is enormously likable and is anchored by a charming performance from Jean Dujardin, as silent movie star George Valentin. In late-1920s Hollywood, as Valentin wonders if the arrival of talking pictures will cause him to fade into oblivion, he makes an intense connection with Peppy Miller, a young dancer set for a big break. As one career declines, another flourishes, and by channelling elements of A Star Is Born and Singing in the Rain, The Artist tells the engaging story with humour, melodrama, romance, and--most importantly--silence. As wonderful as the performances by Dujardin and Bérénice Bejo (Miller) are, the real star of The Artist is cinematographer Guillaume Schiffman.
