The Lamar Art department continues to be one of the largest and most prestigious programs on campus. This year, we are excited to introduce a part‐time faculty member that we share with the McCallum Fine Arts Academy. Ana O’Keefe teaches two Art I. classes at Lamar. These are high school level credit courses filled with artistic 8th graders. We’re so happy to have individuals on campus that bridge us to our high school counterpart, and help us vertically align our curriculum so that our artists are ready to hit the ground running once they get to high school. A Conversation with Ms. O’Keefe What made you decide to work in an educational environment? I have always felt at home in school environments. My uncle and aunt have been directors of a K-12 community-based school in Guatemala for over 30 years, and since childhood I traveled from New York during summer months, and enjoyed attending their school and offering assistance as a teacher aid. During college I continued to volunteer with arts organizations, and found that I was most drawn to collaborating with communities and creating artworks with young people. Tell us about your background (where you’re from, where you went to school, how you came to be at Lamar, etc.): I was born and raised in Albany, New York. I attended New York University and received a bachelor’s degree in Studio Art and Anthropology, and a Masters in Arts Education. After college I worked as a Peace Corps Youth Development volunteer in Honduras and then returned to Brooklyn New York where I lived and taught for 4 years at a Public High School called El Puente Academy for Peace and Social Justice. I got involved with community artists and activists and joined Los Muralistas, a local muralist group, and have completed about 6 large-scale murals around Brooklyn and abroad. I most recently spent the last two years teaching at an International School in Antigua, Guatemala, reconnecting with family and local artists.
