Professional Experience in Education: Interdisciplinary Projects

The Politics, Poetics and Possibilities of Teaching for Social Justice –Miami University 2018 College of Education, Health, & Society Interdisciplinary Teaching and Curriculum Grant EHS Brown Bag Lunch Series Richelle Frabotta, FSW Rolling in the Deep: Navigating Sexual Health and Wellness in Curricula and Classroom Sexuality Education is a multi-faceted, dynamic, and interdisciplinary field. It is imperative that it is constructed and delivered from research-supported sources that present a medically accurate view while consciously valuing human diversity and experience. Sexual health and wellness are what quality curricula and informed teachers promote to all learners. We will engage in frank discussion about the state of sexuality education, your role in providing such, educating about such, and the unique challenges and lifelong benefits in doing so. Credible resources to support your efforts will be provided and a long-term committed relationship will be encouraged.

The Social Justice Teaching Collaborative --Miami University 2017-2018 College of Education, Health, & Society Interdisciplinary Teaching and Curriculum Grant The goal of this grant is to create a professional development program for instructors as part of a fundamental shift in the philosophical and pedagogical efforts to prepare teachers in EHS. Our objective is to center a social justice lens in teacher preparation courses across the division (EDL, EDP, EDT) to “advance social change that encourages social justice”. Through this grant we look to: (1) un-silo conversations from separate courses and divisions (2) unify divisional missions and visions for the purposes of coherent teaching, and (3) operationalize the core values of EHS.

As faculty in EDT, EDL, FSW, and EDP we are looking to contribute to wider national efforts by further tailoring our teacher education program to “create teachers who are positioned to confront social injustices” by designing and implementing “culturally and contextually relevant curriculum and pedagogy” (EDT Mission). Drawing from our collaborative work, we are essentially looking to foster a programmatic, curricular, and professional development infrastructure from the grassroots level.

Leadership and Service Teaching and University Assessmen The Social Justice Teaching Collaborative within The College of Health, Education & Society 2018-present The EHS Interdisciplinary Teaching and Grant Proposal 2017 We propose to continue to operationalize an interdisciplinary, co-teaching model as part of a fundamental shift in the philosophical and pedagogical efforts to prepare students in EHS. This paradigm shift will require ongoing curricular planning for faculty to prepare pre-service teachers to meet the demands of 21st century education in which a knowledge and understanding of diversity and inclusion is vital for working with students in culturally and linguistically diverse classrooms.

Our goal is to center a social justice lens in teacher preparation, health and wellness, and family science and social work courses across the division (EDL, EDP, EDT, FSW, and KNH) to “advance social change that encourages social justice” (EHS Core Values). By identifying core themes, our specific team of EDT, EDL, FSW, KNH, and EDP faculty will co-teach lessons and topics around inclusive and culturally relevant teaching in different key courses like EDT 190, EDL 204, EDP 256, FSW 365, FSW 481, EDL 225, and KNH 378. Finally, through our emerging insights and learning experiences acquired through collaborative efforts, conversations, and co- teaching, we plan to extend this work to provide professional development workshops and presentations for the rest of the faculty affiliated with educating EHS majors. Additionally, through our collaborations and research we seek to create a social justice teaching framework for faculty to use as a pedagogical tool.

The work in this grant aims to inform faculty in EHS of our pedagogical collaborative framework at an EHS community meeting and in a focused workshop during J-term of 2019.

Integration of Chinese-Speaking Students in FSW Courses with Dr. Kate Kuvalanka 2017 The Eloise Martin Grant Award Recipient As student-centered teachers who recognize diversity in our scholarship and classrooms, it is our goal to create an optimal learning community in each of our courses every semester. In our collective experiences, Chinese speaking students are typically outliers in the learning community and experience marginalization differently than other minority students.

This proposal intentionally and strategically focuses on enhancing Chinese-speaking students in our classrooms by addressing language and cultural barriers that, despite efforts to date, seem be inherent.

Strategies include: creating course materials that are available in traditional Chinese language, engaging in culturally specific conversation with our Consultants, and learning basic Chinese characters and correct name pronunciation.

Educational Leadership Winter Term Book Club 2017 Sidney Walton's book The Black Curriculum: Developing a Program in Afro-American Studies (1969, Black Liberation Press, Palo Alto, CA). Walton, a Black Panther and college counselor at the time of the book's writing, wrote a much overlooked but hard hitting, scholarly treatment of systemic racism from a curricular point of view. His work is quick moving, real, devastating in its reveal of barriers to social and educational justice in the context of his work to create a new curriculum in Afro American Studies at Merritt College in Oakland in the mid 1960s. We want to explore the work with you, its continuing impact, and next steps.
