We’d like to think that in a highly partisan modern world, we actually live up to the credo: “We New York@Night Report, You Decide”. No segment of jazz or improvised music or avant garde or 4 whatever you call it is overlooked, since only as a full quilt can we keep out the cold of commercialism. (2004-2014) We were intrigued by Getatchew’s music, which we had discovered on an old cassette, back in 1996. Recordings from 1972 (Philips vinyl), later released as Ethiopiques 14 “The Negus of Ethiopian Sax”. A big sound and a huge vibrato in a minimal setting. A saxophone sound where you recognise Getatchew in a second! Unique. We had our 25th year anniversary party in November 2004 and invited a wide variety of musical friends for a two day festival at the Paradiso, in Amsterdam. Our big dream was to invite Getatchew and have him play with the ICP, the Instant Composers Pool, for many decades Holland’s most amazing free-impro- vising jazz orchestra, based around Misha Mengelberg and Han Bennink. But, of course, we realised that Getatchew came from quite another world, that he hadn’t played concerts for a long time and, in his seventies, was maybe getting on a bit. We took the risk, went to Addis to find him, and explained our story. He agreed to do it right away! What followed was a whirlwind. It was his first time travelling to Europe. When he arrived, he was so full of energy, that he didn’t go to bed for two nights. -

The Secret Gardeners: An Ethnography of Improvised Music in Berlin (2012-13) Tom Arthurs PhD Music The University of Edinburgh 2015 Abstract This thesis addresses the aesthetics, ideologies and practicalities of contemporary European Improvised Music-making - this term referring to the tradition that emerged from 1960s American jazz and free jazz, and that remains, arguably, one of today's most misunderstood and under-represented musical genres. Using a multidisciplinary approach drawing on Grounded Theory, Ethnography and Social Network Analysis, and bounded by Berlin's cosmopolitan local scene of 2012-13, I define Improvised Music as a field of differing-yet-interconnected practices, and show how musicians and listeners conceived of and differentiated between these sub-styles, as well as how they discovered and learned to appreciate such a hidden, ‘difficult’ and idiosyncratic artform. -

As Music Editor for the Voice, he had come up with the Consumer Guide format back in 1969. His original format was twenty records, each accorded a single-paragraph review ending with a letter grade. His domain was rock and roll, but his taste and interests ranged widely, so his CGs regularly featured country, blues, folk, reggae, jazz, and later world (especially African), hip-hop, and electronica. Aside from two years off working for Newsday (when his Consumer Guide was published monthly in Creem), the Voice published his columns more-or-less monthly up to 2006, when new owners purged most of the Senior Editors. Since then he's continued writing in the format for a series of Webzines -- MSN Music, Medium, -
