    I_IVE FR0 IVI NEW YORK PAUL VAN DYK BOOSTS NEW ALBUM WITH FIFTH ANNUAL CENTRAL PARK SHOW BY KERRI MASON The retail challenge of dance music has always been the same. The live dance music experience is communal and last for hours, mak- ing it nearly impossible to package and sell. When DJs produce al- bums, they rarely match the electricity oftheir gigs. Fans, therefore, forgo the purchase for a cover charge. IN But Paul Van Dyk, the world's No. 1 DJ (according to U.K. magazine DJ's annual poll), bridges the gap between the retail and live experience. The Ger- man trance specialist is promoting the Aug. 14 release of his sixth album, "In Between" (Mute), to fans on the dancefloor and at home, via a two -night stint in Central Park (Aug. 17 -18). Now in its fifth year, the Central Park gig-promoted by Made Events, with professional sound, lights and lasers -has become a PAUL VAN DYK, with ever -growing tradition. "Three years ago it rained cats and dogs the entire show popularity as a live performer, draws a and everybody stayed," Van Dyk's North American manager Kurosh crowd at a show in 2004. Nasseri says. Stories: Identity and Conflict in Posturban Culture by Mikage Kuroki Doctor of Philosophy, Graduate Program in English University of California, Riverside, December 2011 Dr. John Ganim, Chairperson Los Angeles represents the paradigmatic postmodern city, its centrifugal layout the antithesis of the modern ring-centered city of which Paris, London, and Vienna and their American counterparts New York and Chicago are prime examples. Despite its postmodern geography, however, L.A., like the modern city, equally threatens to intensify the lives and overwhelm the psyches of its residents. Over a century ago, Georg Simmel argued that the modern urban dweller represents a new human type who develops a blasé attitude as both a product of and a defense against such a modern, metropolitan existence. How do we consider Simmel’s definition of metropolis to accommodate L.A.? Furthermore, would such a mental type effectively combat the stimulation of the city’s landscape, given its propensity to disasters – both manmade, social disasters and natural ones? In the larger context, does L.A.

Samuel A Dissertation submitted to the Faculty of the Graduate School, Marquette University, in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy Milwaukee, Wisconsin May 2014 ABSTRACT “HEAVENLY THEOLOGIANS”: THE PLACE OF ANGELS IN THE THEOLOGY OF MARTIN LUTHER Christopher J. Samuel Marquette University, 2014 This dissertation examines a virtually untouched aspect of Martin Luther’s theology: his angelology. Specifically, it argues four main points: that Luther does, over his corpus, present an angelology; that his angelology is indebted to and in conversation with the prior theological tradition; that his concern with the angels is evident throughout his career; and that his major angelological concerns are pastoral in nature. Furthermore, it presents Luther’s answers to four basic angelological questions: 1) what are the angels?; 2) what is the angels’ role in Creation?; 3) what is the nature of their relationship with humanity?; and 4) what is the nature of their relationship with the church? The first step taken is to present a brief survey of Luther’s angelological context by examining the works of Augustine of Hippo, John Chrysostom, Pseudo-Dionysius, Peter Lombard, Bernard of Clairvaux, Bonaventure, Thomas Aquinas, and Gabriel Biel, and to offer evidence of their influence on Luther on this specific topic.

    From Utopia to Nightmare: National Disillusionment in the Contemporary Nigerian Novel By Olumide Ogundipe A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in ENGLISH Department of ENGLISH AND FILM STUDIES University of Alberta © Olumide Ogundipe, 2014 ii ABSTRACT This dissertation examines representations of post-independence disillusionment in five contemporary Nigerian novels: Waiting for an Angel (2003) by Helon Habila, Graceland (2004) by Chris Abani, Everything Good Will Come (2005) by Sefi Atta, Half of a Yellow Sun (2006) by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, and City of Memories (2012) by Richard Ali. Collectively, these novels detail a massive atrophy whose main characteristics are leadership failures, political resistance, ethnic rivalries, and the misery of the common people during the years of military rule in Nigeria from 1966 to 1999. Waiting for an Angel and Graceland describe the protests of citizens and their oppression by their leaders as the daily productions of the postcolony. Everything Good Will Come articulates the place of gender in contemporary Nigeria, and shows a character whose experience is caught between tradition and modernity while her identity is subsumed within the patriarchal powers dominating her home and country. Half of a Yellow Sun analyzes the symbolism and implications of the Civil War of 1967-1970, and describes this conflagration as the manifestation of ethnic tensions in the country.
