P: Most merciful God, C: We confess that we are in bondage to sin and cannot free ourselves. We have sinned against you in thought, word and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. For the sake of your son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways, to the glory of your holy name. Amen. P: Almighty God, in his mercy, has given his Son to die for us and, for his sake, forgives us all our sins. *The Prayer of the Day P: Generously pardon and give peace to your faithful people, O Lord, that being cleansed from every sin, we may be free and glad to serve; through Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C: Amen.

First Lesson: Isaiah 5:1-7 (The Lord lamented that Israel and Judah have gone astray and likens them to a beautiful vineyard planted with great love and hope. When the grapes came on the vines, they were not what the vine grower expected; instead, they were wild and unruly. The Lord threatened to tear the vineyard down because of its wild yield)

1Let me sing for my beloved my love song concerning his vineyard: My beloved had a vineyard on a very fertile hill. 2He dug it and cleared it of stones, and planted it with choice vines; he built a watchtower in the midst of it, and hewed out a wine vat in it; and he looked for it to yield grapes, but it yielded wild grapes. 3And now, O inhabitants of Jerusalem and men of Judah, judge between me and my vineyard. 4What more was there to do for my vineyard, that I have not done in it? When I looked for it to yield grapes, why did it yield wild grapes? 5And now I will tell you what I will do to my vineyard. I will remove its hedge, and it shall be devoured; I will break down its wall, and it shall be trampled down. 6I will make it a waste; it shall not be pruned or hoed, and briers and thorns shall grow up; I will also command the clouds that they rain no rain upon it. 7For the vineyard of the Lord of hosts is the house of Israel, and the men of Judah are his pleasant planting; and he looked for justice, but behold, bloodshed; for righteousness, but behold, an outcry! L: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. Psalm: 80:7-18 (read responsively) (The Lord brought a vine out of Egypt and planted it in ground that was cleared specifically for this precious vine. The psalmist lamented that the Lord had broken down the protective walls around the vine, making it susceptible to enemies who take its fruit for their own use. “Restore us, O Lord God of hosts!”)

L:7Restore us, O God of hosts; show the light of your countenance, and we shall be saved. C:8You have brought a vine out of Egypt; you cast out the nations and planted it. L:9You prepared the ground for it; it took root and filled the land. C:10The mountains were covered by its shadow and the towering cedar trees by its boughs. L:11You stretched out its tendrils to the sea and its branches to the river. C:12Why have you broken down its wall, so that all who pass by pluck off its grapes? L:13The wild boar of the forest has ravaged it, and the beasts of the field have grazed upon it. C:14Turn now, O God of hosts, look down from heaven; behold and tend this vine; preserve what your right hand has planted. L:15They burn it with fire like rubbish; at the rebuke of your countenance let them perish. C:16Let your hand be upon the man of your right hand, the son of man you have made so strong for yourself. L:17And so will we never turn away from you; give us life, that we may call upon your Name. C:18Restore us, O Lord God of hosts; show the light of your countenance, and we shall be saved.

Second Lesson: Philippians 3:4b-14 (Paul wrote to the believers in Philippi, explaining that though he suffered for his in Christ, anything he lost he considers nothing but gain because of his increasing knowledge of Jesus Christ. He reiterated that righteousness comes not from pedigree, education, or circumstance, but solely through Christ by faith.)

4bIf anyone else thinks he has reason for confidence in the flesh, I have more: 5circumcised on the eighth day, of the people of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of Hebrews; as to the law, a Pharisee; 6as to zeal, a persecutor of the church; as to righteousness under the law, blameless. 7But whatever gain I had, I counted as loss for the sake of Christ. 8Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ 9and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God that depends on faith — 10that I may know him and the power of his resurrection, and may share his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, 11that by any means possible I may attain the resurrection from the dead. 12Not that I have already obtained this or am already perfect, but I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own. 13Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, 14I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. L: The Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God.

*Alleluia Verse

*Gospel Announcement P: The Holy Gospel according to Saint Matthew, the 21st chapter.

Gospel: Matthew 21:33-46 (Jesus told a story about a vineyard where wicked tenants beat and killed the vineyard owner’s servants as they came to collect the harvest of fruit. The owner of the vineyard then sent his son. In an allegory of Jesus’ own death, when the wicked tenants identified the son, they killed him in an attempt to claim the vineyard.)

33{Jesus said to the chief priests and elders of the people,} “Hear another parable. There was a master of a house who planted a vineyard and put a fence around it and dug a winepress in it and built a tower and leased it to tenants, and went into another country. 34When the season for fruit drew near, he sent his servants to the tenants to get his fruit. 35And the tenants took his servants and beat one, killed another, and stoned another. 36Again he sent other servants, more than the first. And they did the same to them. 37Finally he sent his son to them, saying, ‘They will respect my son.’ 38But when the tenants saw the son, they said to themselves, ‘This is the heir. Come, let us kill him and have his inheritance.’ 39And they took him and threw him out of the vineyard and killed him. 40When therefore the owner of the vineyard comes, what will he do to those tenants?” 41They said to him, “He will put those wretches to a miserable death and let out the vineyard to other tenants who will give him the fruits in their seasons.” 42Jesus said to them, “Have you never read in the Scriptures: ‘The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone; this was the Lord’s doing, and it is marvelous in our eyes’? 43Therefore I tell you, the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people producing its fruits. 44And the one who falls on this stone will be broken to pieces; and when it falls on anyone, it will crush him.” 45When the chief priests and the Pharisees heard his parables, they perceived that he was speaking about them. 46And although they were seeking to arrest him, they feared the crowds, because they held him to be a prophet. Sermon: Pastor Tamorria *The Votum

*Hymn of the Day: Come, Let Us Eat LBW# 214 (see insert) verses 1,2,4 (Liberia)

* The Apostles’ Creed I believe in God the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit, and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. On the third day, he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

*The Prayers C: Amen. *Passing of the Peace P: The peace of the Lord be with you always. C: And also with you. (We share the peace with one another. Please stay in your pew and greet without hand shaking.)

Offertory: We Are Marching in the Light of God –arr. Behnke (South Africa)

*Offertory Prayer: P: Let us pray… Lord God C: we give you thanks for the wondrous gifts you have so freely given us. You are the source of our lives, our work, and our possessions. In an act of worship we offer back to you what you have first given to us, that our sacrifices in some small way, might express our devotion to you and be used to spread the Gospel message in the world. In the name of Jesus, our Master and Lord. Amen.

*Great Thanksgiving

*The Proper Preface P It is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to You, O Lord, holy Father, almighty and everlasting God, for the countless blessings You so freely bestow on us and all creation. We bless You for the ways in which You prepare us for Your harvest day, granting us Your gifts and giving us the blessing of being at Your Table. Above all, we give thanks for Your boundless love shown to us when You sent Your only-begotten Son, Jesus Christ, into our flesh and laid on Him our sin, giving Him into death that we might not die eternally. Because He is now risen from the dead and lives and reigns to all eternity, all who believe in Him will overcome sin and death and will rise again to new life. Therefore with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify your glorious name, evermore praising You and singing: *The Sanctus

*Eucharistic Prayer P: Blessed are You, O Lord of heaven and earth. We give thanks to You for having sent Your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord, to be our Redeemer, saving us from the power of sin, death, and the devil. Invited by Your grace and made righteous by the sacrifice of Your beloved Son, Jesus Christ, we come to Your Table with gratitude and joy. Strengthen us through Christ’s body and blood that we daily grow as people of faith and peace, looking forward to the eternal feast yet to come in Your heavenly kingdom C: Amen. Come Lord Jesus.

*The Words of Institution

*The Lord’s Prayer *P: Lord remember us in your Kingdom and teach us to pray… All: Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.

WELCOME! Thank you for joining us for worship! In the name of Jesus Christ, Saint Paul Lutheran Church is committed to praising, praying, and proclaiming the Word of God. All baptized Christians who have received their first communion are invited to join us for Holy Communion believing as we do that Christ is truly present in this holy meal. Please follow the ushers instruction for when to leave your pew. Receive the wafer with open hands and then take a communion glass from the tray. If you have trouble coming forward please inform the usher and communion will be brought to your pew. Please join us again.

Thought for the day: When it comes to righteousness, Paul says, “I win the medal!” When it comes to following the law to the letter, again he says, “I get the prize!” But now his life is in Christ who showed the apostle the worthlessness of his labors. Paul confesses his zeal for the law and says that whatever he gained by that, he now counts as loss. The only gain we can rejoice in is the love and mercy of Jesus, our Savior.

Have you seen our BIG BIG House Video? Thanks to Emily Gettman and the Hostetler crew for the videography and to the VBS kids for their cooperation. Check it out on Facebook! If you don’t have Facebook let us know and we’ll try to arrange for another showing on the big screen in Fellowship Hall!

How many new things can we have in one year? Well we are trying something special for the younger kids for Halloween since most community events are cancelled. Wear your costume to Sunday School on Reformation Sunday (October 25) – we’ll have a little parade to the older classes and the Christian Education Committee will provide a small bag of treats. No scary or ungodly costumes – keep it fun and simple!

Bible Study for October (two opportunities) One of the enriching features of church life is our common desire to delve further into the Holy Scriptures. This fall we all can engage in a study entitled Words that Matter, a look at the deeper meaning behind several words found in the Scripture. Rather than just a study of one book, this allows us to trace the rich meaning of the word from one book to another and, in the course of doing so, come to a more profound understanding of what conveys to us through His Word. So join us in person or by Zoom on Thursdays, the morning session is held here at the church in the Parlor at 10AM, the evening Zoom session is held at 7PM, the invitation to which will be included in the Wednesday and Thursday daily devotion e-mail for that week. The September Bible Sessions will be held on October 8, 15, 22, and 29.

Third Thursday Bible, Bingo, Bag Lunch! Friends in Christ (our group for widows, widowers and friends) is taking on a new look this fall. Starting on October 15 we will meet at 11:15. We will be meeting in Fellowship Hall and have plenty of room for social distancing. We will use paper bingo papers and stamps. Small prizes will be given out. Also, if you bring a bag lunch we can hang around and visit a bit. Hopefully, Covid will end soon and we can go back to some of our fun outings, but in the meantime, we can have fun together in our nice big building! Pass the word around.

† TAKING FAITH HOME – October 4, 2020 AD These readings are related to the Lectionary readings for this Sunday. We invite you to take time each day to read the assigned Bible passage.

SCRIPTURE VERSE FOR THIS WEEK “The stone the builders didn’t accept has become the most important stone of all. The Lord has done it. It is wonderful in our eyes.” Matthew 21:42 (NIRV)

SAY, PRAY AND BLESS:

A Prayer for the Week: Lord Jesus, help us to make you the center of our lives . What you do for us is wonderful! Amen. (Matthew 21:42)

Mealtime Prayer: Lord Jesus, thank you for the food before us, the friends around us, the love between us, and your presence with us. Amen.

A Blessing to Give: May the Lord watch over you and smile on you this day. Amen. (Psalm 80:7,14)

CARING CONVERSATIONS Discuss in your household or small group: • Of all of your possessions, what would you miss most if it wasn’t there? • A capstone is the center stone found at the top of the arch. It supports the surrounding bricks or stones and helps distribute the weight of the remainder of the arch. Without it, the arch would collapse. In the Bible, Jesus is referred to as the “capstone” (see Matthew 21:42). How is he like a capstone? • How important is Jesus in your life? Is he the “capstone” that holds your life together?

DEVOTIONS Gather some river stones. As a home devotional activity, take turns attempting to build a stone “tower” by placing the stones one on top of another. See who can build the tallest tower. Talk together about the different things that people try to build their lives upon, and discuss Christ’s place as the “most important stone of all.” Pray together for faith and strength to build your lives upon him.

SERVICE The prophet Isaiah compared God’s Old Testament people to a vineyard that God planted and cared for (Isaiah 5:1-7). Volunteer this week to help a sick or elderly person clean up their garden, or to help maintain your church grounds or a community area.

RITUALS AND TRADITIONS In Philippians 3:12-14, the apostle Paul talks about eternal life as a “prize” that he is pursuing. This week, enjoy an evening of games as a household. Award prizes to all who participate. To finish, read Paul’s words and say a prayer of thanks for the ultimate prize that God gives to us through Jesus Christ.

People and issues to pray for in your devotions this week: For the Global Church on this World Communion Sunday and for those mentioned today including ______and ______.

PLEASE NOTE A CHANGE: ALL COMMITTEES NIGHT IS NOW OCTOBER 12 AT 7:00 PM – ROOM ASSIGNMENTS WILL BE IN NEXT WEEKS BULLETIN AND WILL BE POSTED ON THE DOOR.
