Proclamation
IN RECOGNITION of “THE 2008 AUGUSTA GREEN JACKETS”
WHEREAS, on September 11th, 2008, the Augusta Green Jackets captured the South Atlantic League Championship; this was the 10th championship in the history of Augusta professional baseball; and
WHEREAS, in route to the highest winning percentage in all of professional baseball, the Augusta Green Jackets captured the South Atlantic League Championship by winning the second half of the Southern Division; once in the play-offs, the Augusta Green Jackets swept both the Asheville Tourists and West Virginia Power while compiling a record of 93-50; and;
WHEREAS, on the field, the Augusta Green Jackets were led by the “Most Spectacular Pitcher of the Year” Madison Bumgarner; Bumgarner led all of Minor League Baseball with an ERA of 1.46 and a record of 17 wins and three loses; and
WHEREAS, the Augusta Green Jackets continue to provide affordable, family entertainment throughout the CSRA and are a strong community partner; in 2008, the Augusta Green Jackets set another attendance record with over 200,000 fans cheering on their hometown team and single game attendance with 5,566 on July 4th; and
WHEREAS, the Augusta Green Jackets are owned and operated by Ripken Professional Baseball and affiliated with the San Francisco Giants; and
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Deke Copenhaver, Mayor of the City of Augusta, do hereby proclaim September 16, 2008, as “THE AUGUSTA GREEN JACKETS DAY” in Augusta, Georgia, and urge all citizens to join in this observance.
