PUBLICATION OF ZEN •CENTER Volume Vilt Nos. 1-2 Fall 1969 This fellow was a son of Nobusuke Goemon Ichenose of Takahama, the province of Wakasa. His nature was stupid and tough. When he was young, none of his relatives liked him. When he was twelve years old, he was or<Llined as a monk by Ekkei, Abbot of Myo-shin Monastery. Afterwards, he studied literature under Shungai of Kennin Monastery for three years, and gained nothing. Then he went to Mii-dera and studied Tendai philosophy under Tai-ho for. a summer, and gained nothing. After this, he went to Bizen and studied Zen under the old teacher Gisan for one year, and attained nothing. He then went to the East, to Kamakura, and studied under the Zen master Ko-sen in the Engaku Monastery for six years, and added nothing to the aforesaid nothingness. He was in charge of a little temple, Butsu-nichi, one of the temples in Engaku Cathedral, for one year and from there he went to Tokyo to attend Kei-o College for one year and a half, making himself the worst student there; and forgot the nothingness that he had gained. Then he created for himself new delusions, and came to Ceylon in the spring of 1887; and now, under the Ceylon monk, he is studying the Pali Language and Hinayana Buddhism. Such a wandering mendicant! He ought to <repay the twenty years of debts to those who fed him in the name of Buddhism. July 1888, Ceylon. The Origin of Oriental Thought in American Poets
Yasuyoshi Miyoshi THE ORIGIN OF ORIENTAL THOUGHT IN AMERICAN POETS Yasuyoshi Miyoshi Introduction ޓThe origin of the encounter with Zen Buddhism in American poets goes back to the literati of New England, who into the middle of the nineteenth century were deeply rooted in the Puritan tradition. The cultured people’s concern which had heretofore completely dedicated to European ideas, turned for the fi rst time towards Oriental thought. It was the transcendentalists in Concord, Massachusetts who advocated natural philosophy through which human beings can reach the holiness in God through Nature. A philosopher and poet, Henry David Thoreau (1817-1862), who put Ralph Waldo Emerson’s (1803-1882) ideas on transcendentalism into practice as an essayist and poet, played a central role in this turning-point. ޓThe philosophy of Emerson, who at that time was called ‘the Sage of Concord’ has been considerably discussed, and a viewpoint evaluating him as a poet is indispensable for investigating the infl uence of Zen Buddhism on the history of American poetry. It would, however, be more precise to base this infl uence on the oldest Oriental sacred book, the Veda, in India, rather than on Zen Buddhism. Emerson’s Oriental-tinged, metaphysical poetry, to say the least, is a starting point for a historical synopsis of the stream of American poetry, from the World’s Parliament of Religion held in Chicago in 1893, to approximately fi fty years later, in the Zen‘boom’of the 1950s. Senzaki, a student of Soyen Shaku the first Zen Master to visit America,, came to America in 1905 and, like Sokei-an, Senzaki buried his bones here. These two men continue FIRST ZEN INSTITUTE OF AMERICA, INC. to be of interest to us because they came so early, matured their Zen in America, and because they came from a single line of 113 East 30th Street teachers determined, not to simply replicate the monastic system New York City, New York 10016 of Japanese Zen, but to bring the living demonstration of Zen (212) 686-2520 itself to the American landscape to see if it might take root. -
Special Exhibition: Soyen Shaku and Modern Japan, June 4 - August 6 the Former Pupil of Yukichi Fukuzawa Who Transmitted Zen to the World
Press Release June 11, 2018 Keio University Special Exhibition: Soyen Shaku and Modern Japan, June 4 - August 6 The Former Pupil of Yukichi Fukuzawa who Transmitted Zen to the World A special exhibition for the centennial Buddhist memorial of Soyen Shaku (1860-1919) will be held to reflect on the life of this Buddhist priest who introduced Zen (meditation) to the wider world, hosted by Keio University in conjunction with the Enkaku-ji Temple of the Rinzai Sect at which Shaku served as Chief Abbot. Soyen Shaku was widely respected in the Meiji (1868-1912) and Taisho (1912-1926) periods, and gained the trust of many influential figures in the worlds of politics and culture, with his mentoring of Natsume Soseki in “Zazen” seated meditation being particularly noteworthy. Around 100 items tracing the course of Soyen Shaku’s life will be on display at this exhibition, with an emphasis on materials from the youth of this peerless Zen monk who turned his gaze from modern Japan onto the wider world. These include materials associated with his time at Keio University which he was attending in spite of the opposition of his Zen master; those from his studies of the Pali language and of Buddhism during the time he spent in British Ceylon (present-day Sri Lanka); materials from the historical interfaith dialogue of the first World’s Parliament of Religions held in Chicago in 1893 at which he represented Japan; and from his time serving as a battlefield chaplain during the Russo- Japanese war. A Special Talk and Zazen Meditation Workshops will also be held. -

1 November 21, 2011 Kobutsu, I want to thank you for all you've been doing to bring to light the activities of Eido Shimano and to help protect vulnerable Zen students. You also helped post an earlier piece I wrote entitled "Caveat Emptor". I have attached another writing I just completed, inspired by the publishing of Merry Benezra's book Special Karma. My hope is that it may help to ground the discussion on the situation at ZSS with some actual experiences of one who was present as a resident at DBZ--albeit 35 years ago! If you feel it is appropriate I give you permission to submit it online--I was thinking of The Shimano Archives and The Zen Forum International--or I can do it myself. You may be in a position to do this more easily, however . Please just let me know if and where you decide to submit it--if anywhere. What you and others have been doing is very important. It has helped me sort through difficult times in my life, and hopefully all this will help others who have been harmed--as well as prevent further harm from happening. The class will include a meditation period; use of ko-ans, study of Sokei-an’s translation and commentary on the Sutra of the Sixth Patriarch, and more. suggested donation $10-20 for more information contact [email protected] Sokei-an Sasaki was the Zen teacher from whom Samuel Lewis received the Dharma Transmission. Sasaki’s method was soul to soul communication, a meeting in the Buddha nature that is present but un-awakened in most of us. Nyogen Senzaki was on the West Coast and Sam learned to perfect his skill in meditation and ability to unravel ko- ans with him. Sam would meet Sasaki in 1931 in New York City a few months after this Zen Master would open his zendo. Both Sasaki and Both Sasaki and Senzaki were of the same direct lineage as Soyen Shaku who introduced Buddhism to America at the Chicago Exposition before the turn of the 20th century. The lineage of the Sufi Ruhaniat started by Samuel Lewis is blessed to have a deep strain of Buddhist transmission woven into its heart. There was little to no writings of Sokei-an available during Sam’s lifetime. Now they are available, and very inspiring. I think he gives the clearest exposition ever of Zen Buddhism and points the way directly to Buddhahood Wali Ali studied this new material as part of the biography on Samuel Lewis that he is writing. -

E-mail: [email protected] The aim of this study was to review emerging evidence of novel treatments for anxiety disorders. We searched PubMed and EMBASE for evidence-based therapeutic alternatives for anxiety disorders in adults, covering the past five years. Eligible articles were systematic reviews (with or without meta-analysis), which evaluated treatment effectiveness of either nonbiological or biological interventions for anxiety disorders. Retrieved articles were summarized as an overview. We assessed methods, quality of evidence, and risk of bias of the articles. Nineteen systematic reviews provided information on almost 88 thousand participants, distributed across 811 clinical trials. Regarding the interventions, 11 reviews investigated psychological or nonbiological treatments; 5, pharmacological or biological; and 3, more than one type of active intervention. Computer- delivered psychological interventions were helpful for treating anxiety of low-to-moderate intensity, but the therapist-oriented approaches had greater results. Recommendations for regular exercise, mindfulness, yoga, and safety behaviors were applicable to anxiety.
