Hyderabad receives drinking water from five reservoirs namely Osmansagar, Himayathsagar, Manjira, Singur and Krishna. The present study is aimed at the variation of the physicochemical parameters of the Osmansagar Lake for a period of one year from September 2013 to August 2014.The study of water quality of Osmansagar is chosen in the paper as it is the oldest and more susceptible to the growing urbanization and industrialization owing to its close vicinity to the city. The water quality index (WQI) of the lake using the physicochemical parameters is calculated. The results showed medium water quality of the lake. Though most of the parameters studied are in accordance to the Bureau of Indian standards (BIS), the impact of urbanization and industrialization on water quality is clearly seen in the analysis. If proper measures are not taken the quality of water may deteriorate in the future affecting its potability. -

ISSN (Online) - 2349-8846 Hyderabad’s Musi River: Why Do Technocratic Solutions Fail in Safeguarding Urban Waterbodies? VIKAS SEHRA Vikas Sehra ([email protected]) is with the Centre for the Study of Regional Development, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. Vol. 55, Issue No. 10, 07 Mar, 2020 In complete contrast to its past glory, the Musi river which traverses through Hyderabad city, is degraded by indiscriminate disposal of waste and massive encroachments. The Telangana government had announced plans in 2017 to revitalise the river through a large- scale riverfront development project. By revisiting similar initiatives taken up earlier to resuscitate the Musi, the article argues that these techno-managerial solutions completely disregard notions of commons, only to normalise their exploitation. On 28 September 1908, water levels in Musi river rose to 16 feet and completely flooded Hyderabad, leaving behind a trail of death and destruction. Encroached and concretised, the river has shrunk into a drain ever since. Today, it crawls through the city carrying a deadly mix of drain water interspersed with patches of cattle grass, solid wastes, and poisonous fumes. To revitalise the river, the Telangana government announced the Musi Riverfront Development Project in 2017. The degrading condition of such ecological commons (such as waterbodies, air, wetlands, etc) in cities brings focus back to Hardin’s "The Tragedy of the Commons" (1968). According to Hardin, in the absence of well-defined ownership, individuals maximise their self- interests, which eventually results in the overexploitation of commons. But Hardin’s conceptualisation was eventually criticised, and many scholars over time pointed out its ISSN (Online) - 2349-8846 limitations. -

M A R K E T B E AT HYDERABAD Residential Q4 2019 New launches on the rise, more projects underway in 2020 A total of 4,340 new units were launched in Q4, a 2X rise on a quarterly basis. This is in line with our predictions during Q2-Q3 when several large- scale projects were awaiting approvals. Established catchments such as Kondapur, Hafeezpet, Nallagandla and fast-growing locations such as 14,464 NEW UNIT LAUNCHES (2019) Gopanpally – Tellapur, Bachupally are have witnessed new launches during the quarter. On an annual basis, the number of launches were higher by 30% y-o-y, suggesting a positive momentum in the residential market. Western quadrant accounted for 3/4th of the total launches during the year with majority of the projects launched within close proximity to IT and financial districts. Locations with major new launches in other parts of the SHARE OF MID SEGMENT IN NEW city include Uppal, Bolarum, Patancheru and Kismatpur etc. Mid segment projects accounted for nearly 90% of the units launched during the quarter 46% LAUNCHES (2019) in addition to a a luxury project in Kondapur. This sub-market continues to attract buyers in the premium segment on the back of its excellent physical and social infrastructure and proximity to IT and financial districts. Growth in new launches is likely to continue as developers are gearing up to launch nearly 20,000 units over the next 12-18 months. Improper management of municipal solid waste causes hazards to pubic and environment. Various studies reveal that about 90% of MSW is due to improper management of open dumps and landfills, creating problems to public health and the environment. In Hyderabad more amount of solid waste is generating mostly due to the rapid population and industrialization and mainly due to unawareness of solid waste among the public and masses. In the present day, an attempt has been made to provide a comprehensive review of the characteristics, generation, collection and transportation, disposal and treatment technologies of MSW practiced in Hyderabad. The day pertaining to has been carried out to evaluate the current status and identify the major problems.
