I really did like this book, hell, I have been waiting for Ive Reached for the Moon an Im Hittin the Stars forever and finally got it for Christmas. I was totally expecting it to end the way we ALL wanted it to end but unfortunately I felt it was rather redundant. It honestly took a very long time to get through this Ma as the story line was fairly slow, but still engaging. This is the first of the series I have read, I don't believe its Ma first? Im not too sure, the librarian recommended it. Anyway the description in the book is detailed making it so easy too imagine characters, location, everything. I give 3. If that makes sense, very relaxing read. Mar 28, Claire Kelly rated it liked it. Bloody Brilliant! Oct 15, naan rated it did not like it. I'm so dissapointed. This book is so boring, save for maybe one chapter. I read all previous "Ma" books and this one is one long description of breakfast, dinners, and smoking. Same thing over and over again - weak on plot. And the end is I'm onto Ma he last installment in the series, sure hoping it won't end up being a sequel to thi book. Her father, Frederick M. Safka —was of Ukrainian ethnic background, and her mother, jazz singer Pauline "Polly" Altomare —was of Italian heritage. After school, her parents insisted that she go to college, so she studied acting at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York, [7] where she began singing in Ive Reached for the Moon an Im Hittin the Stars folk clubs of Greenwich Villagesuch as The Bitter Ive Reached for the Moon an Im Hittin the Starsand signed her first recording contract. Initially signed to Columbia Records in the United States, Melanie released two singles on the label. Her debut album received positive reviews from Billboardwhich Ma her voice as "wise beyond her years. Her non-conformist approach to the selections on this LP make her a new talent to be reckoned with. Later inMelanie had a hit in the Netherlands with "Beautiful People". She was one of only three solo women [11] who performed at the Woodstock Festival in and the inspiration for her first hit song, " Lay Down Candles in the Rain ", apparently arose from the Woodstock audience lighting candles during her set although most of the "candles" were actually matches or lighters. The B-side of the single featured Melanie's spoken-word track "Candles in the Rain". InMelanie was the only artist to ignore the court injunction banning the Powder Ridge Rock Festival scheduled to be held on July 31, August 1 and August 2, Shortly following this performance, she played at the Strawberry Fields Festival held from August 7 to 9,at Ive Reached for the Moon an Im Hittin the Stars ParkOntario. Inshe formed her own label, Neighborhood Recordswith Peter Schekeryk, who was also her producer and husband. When first released, "Brand New Key" was banned by some radio stations because some heard sexual innuendo in the lyrics. Melanie has acknowledged the possibility of reading an unintended sexual innuendo in the song, stating, "I wrote [ Brand New Key ] in about fifteen minutes one night. I thought it was cute; a kind of old thirties tune. I guess a key and a lock have always been Freudian symbols, and pretty obvious ones at that. There was no deep serious expression behind the song, but people read things into it. They made up incredible stories as to what the lyrics said and what the song meant. In some places, it was even banned from the radio [ Of course I can see it symbolically with the key, but I just thought of roller skating. I was fasting with a twenty seven day fast on water. I broke the fast and went back to my life living in New Jersey and we were going to a flea market around six in the morning. On the way back So we pulled into the McDonalds and I got the whole works The aroma brought back memories of roller skating and learning to ride a Ma and the vision of my dad holding the back fender of the tire. And me saying to my dad Then I'd look back and he wasn't holding and I'd fall. So that whole thing came back to me and came out in this song. So it was not a deliberate or intentional sexual innuendo. To compete with this release, Melanie's former record company released "The Nickel Song", which she had recorded while still signed to Buddah Records. Both songs were simultaneous top hits while "Brand New Key" was still on the charts — setting a record for the first female performer to have three top hits concurrently. MaMelanie started to retreat from the spotlight to begin a family. The album was praised by The New York Times Ma one of the year's best, although it was largely ignored by the public. InMelanie wrote the music and lyrics for a theatrical musicalAce of Diamondswith a book by Ed Kelleher and Seymour Vall, based on a series of letters written by Annie Oakley. Though never fully produced, several staged readings were performed at Lincoln Center starring Melanie as the narrator and pop singer and actress Annie Golden as Oakley. The song, under the original title " Ive Reached for the Moon an Im Hittin the Stars ", was written and released in as a single by Sugar Boy and his Cane Cutters but it failed to make the charts. The song first became popular in by girl group The Dixie Cupswho scored an international hit with "Iko Iko". Inas part of a lawsuit settlement between Crawford and the Dixie Cups, the trio were given part songwriting credit for the song. InDr. John had a minor hit with his version of "Iko Iko". Crawford set phrases chanted by Mardi Gras Indians to music for the song. Crawford himself states that he has no idea what the words mean, and that he originally sang the phrase "Chock-a-mo", but the title Ive Reached for the Moon an Im Hittin the Stars misheard by Chess Records and Checker Records president Leonard Chesswho misspelled it as "Jock-a-mo" for the record's release. James Crawfordgave a interview with OffBeat Magazine discussing the song's meaning: [2]. Crawford: It came from two Indian chants that I put music to. I just put them together and made a song out of them. Really it was just like " Lawdy Miss Clawdy ". That was a phrase everybody in New Orleans used. Lloyd Price just added music to it and it became a hit. I was just trying to write a catchy song Interviewer: Listeners wonder what 'Jock-A-Mo' means. What does it mean? The Dixie Cups version was the result of an unplanned jam in a New York City recording studio where they began an Ive Reached for the Moon an Im Hittin the Stars version of "Iko Iko", accompanying themselves with drumsticks on an aluminum chair, a studio ashtray and a Coke bottle. The Dixie Cups had learned "Iko, Iko" from hearing the Hawkins sisters' grandmother sing it, [3] but they knew little about the origin of the song and so the original authorship credit went to the members, Barbara Ann Hawkins, Ma sister Rosa Lee Hawkins, and their cousin Joan Marie Johnson. This same version was also used on the soundtrack of the film The Skeleton Key. A comparison of the two recordings demonstrates the shared lyric and melody between the two songs, though the arrangements are different in tempo, instrumentation and harmony. Crawford's rationale for the settlement was motivated by years of legal battles with no royalties. In the end, he stated, "I don't even know if I really am getting my just dues. I just figure 50 percent of something is better than percent of nothing. In the s, the Dixie Cups became aware that another group of people were claiming authorship of "Iko Iko". It is Mardi Gras music, and the Shaweez was one of many Mardi Gras groups who dressed up in far out Indian costumes and came on as Indian tribes. The tribes used to hang out on Claiborne Avenue and used to get juiced up there getting ready to perform and ' second line ' in their own special style during Mardi Gras. That's dead and gone because there's a freeway where those grounds used to be. The tribes were like social clubs who lived all year for Mardi Gras, getting their costumes together. Linguists and historians have proposed a variety of origins for the seemingly nonsensical chorus, suggesting that the words may come from a melange of cultures. An interpretation in Louisiana Creole French is:. Hey now! Listen, listen at the Ive Reached for the Moon an Im Hittin the Stars All our love made our king be born All our love made it happen. Linguist Geoffrey D. Kimball derives the lyrics of the song in part from Mobilian Jargonan extinct American Indian trade language consisting mostly of Choctaw and Chickasaw words and once used by Southeastern American Indians, Blacks, and European settlers and their descendants in the Gulf Coast Region. Another possible translation interprets the third and fourth lines as: [29]. In a Offbeat article, the Ghanaian social linguist Dr. Evershed Amuzu said the Ma was "definitely West African", reflecting the tonal patterns of the region. He notes that the phrase ayeko —often doubled as ayeko, ayeko —is a popular chant meaning "well done, or congratulations" among Ive Reached for the Moon an Im Hittin the Stars Akan and Ewe people in modern-day TogoGhanaand Benin. Ewes in particular are credited with bringing West African cultural influences like Vodun rites to Haiti and on to New Orleans. Musicologist Ned Sublette has backed the idea that the chorus might have roots in Haitian slave culture, considering that the rhythms of Mardi Gras Indians are nearly indistinguishable from the Haitian Kata rhythm. Yaquimohe has also noted, was a common name among the Taino inhabitants of Haiti in the early years of the slave trade. Sybil Kein proposed the following translation from Yoruba and Creole:. Code language! God is watching Jacouman causes it; we will be emancipated Jacouman urges it; we will wait. Louisiana Voodoo practitioners would recognize many aspects of the song as being about spirit possession. The practitioner, the horse, waves a flag representing a certain god to call that god into himself or herself. Setting a flag on fire is a curse. The man in green, who either Ive Reached for the Moon an Im Hittin the Stars personality or whose appearance is deceiving, would be recognized in Voodoo as possessed by a peaceful Rada spirit, inclining to green clothes and love magic. The man in red, who is being sent to kill, would likely be possessed by a vengeful Petwo spirit. Haitian ethnologist Milo Rigaud published a transcription in of a Voodoo chant, "Crabigne Nago".
