Our new season is packed to the rafters with exciting theatre, award winning film, community talent, festivals and more.
We are delighted to welcome Propeller to The Electric for the first time. They will be bringing their own brand of Shakespeare to our Theatre with Pocket Dream (p14), a sixty minute version of their internationally acclaimed production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, especially devised for young audiences. We are also excited to welcome back Paines Plough with a powerful new play by Kate Tempest - Hopelessly Devoted (p15).
Our popular Jazz Café (p8, 12, 19, 21) is celebrating women in jazz this Autumn, featuring some of the leading female musicians on the British Jazz Scene. This season includes BBC Jazz Vocalist Award Winner Anita Wardell, internationally renowned trombonist Annie Whitehead and saxophonist Trish Clowes, a BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artist.
The Guildford Book Festival will be returning to our venue with a festival packed full of wonderful literary events. We are also having two festivals of our own - our continuing Electric Film Festival (p5) and a half term Family Festival (p13).
For drama lovers we have The Unremarkable Death of Marilyn Monroe (p11), an outstanding one woman show about the timeless American icon. Top comedian Seann Walsh will be joining us this season with his new show ‘28’ (p11) and, for lovers of orchestral music, the Surrey Mozart Players present two exciting concerts (p7, 17) featuring star violinist Alexander Sitkovetsky in September and tenor Peter Aisher in November.

Surrey Mozart Players open their 2014-15 season with the welcome return of star violinist Alexander Sitkovetsky to play the dramatic Sibelius violin concerto.
True to their roots, they pay homage to Mozart with his overture 'The Impresario' and, in a piece of innovative programming, conclude their concert with a new arrangement for orchestra of Brahms' second piano quartet, made by the orchestra's dynamic conductor Kenneth Woods.

In the vibrant Latin quarter of 19th century Paris, an impoverished student, Rodolfo, and a frail seamstress, Mimi, embark on a love affair with tragic consequences.
Containing some of Puccini’s best-loved music, the pathos of the story is offset by scenes of youthful high jinks and exuberant street life. Sung in English and performed by talented soloists with Guildford Opera chorus and orchestra.

Saxophonist and composer Trish Clowes is currently a BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artist. Described by the Guardian as “one of the most agile and original jugglers of improv and adventurous composition to have appeared in the UK in recent times”, her first two albums were reviewed to critical acclaim. The third was recorded with the BBC Concert Orchestra earlier this year, and is due for release at the London Jazz Festival this Autumn. We are delighted to welcome Trish to Guildford along with Ross Stanley on piano and Josh Morrison on drums.

A winner of the Jazz Services Recording Subsidy Award for 2013, prestigious bass player and composer Alison Rayner brings her contemporary jazz quintet ARQ to Guildford as part of their nationwide tour. Her album 'August' was released in July 2014 and features original compositions drawn on a love for lyrical melodies, deep grooves and influences from folk, funk and Latin. Completing the line up are Deirdre Cartwright, regarded as one of only a handful of great international women jazz guitarists, Diane McLoughlin on sax, Steve Lodder on piano and Buster Birch on drums. An evening absolutely not to be missed, early booking recommended.

Now in its 42nd year (its 17th at the Electric Theatre) local singer Martyn Wyndham-Read leads his cast of singers, Morris dancers, musicians, mummers and storytellers through the annual cycle of seasonal customs, from Candlemas to Harvest Home, Maypole Dancing to Rush bearing and Pace Egging to Halloween. This colourful show culminates in the performance of an ancient Mummer’s play, the singing of carols and the sharing out of mistletoe.

It is Christmas Eve and Clara and her brother Fritz are very excited. The presents sit under the Christmas tree, they are wearing their best clothes and they can’t wait for the festivities to begin. Suddenly a mysterious guest appears. Fritz is a little frightened but Clara recognises him as the toymaker, who hands out presents to the children. Fritz is given a beautiful drum and Clara receives the Nutcracker doll.
Fritz becomes jealous and plays with the Nutcracker carelessly which upsets Clara. She manages to snatch it away from him and makes a little bed for the doll under the Christmas tree.
The children soon become sleepy. Clara checks on her Nutcracker and falls asleep with it under the tree. On the stroke of midnight she suddenly awakes as the Nutcracker comes to life and becomes the handsome Nutcracker Prince. And now the adventures really begin…
Back with their third gorgeous ballet production, Let’s All Dance brings this classic Christmas treat to life for children of all ages. Journey through the magical night with Clara and the Nutcracker Prince, meet the Mouse King and join the Sugar Plum Fairy in the beautiful Land of Sweets.
