TODAY'S GAME The Colorado Avalanche travels to Minnesota to take on the Wild in a "Black Friday" matinee here at Xcel Energy Center. Today is the first half of a back-to-back for the Avs, who will return home to host the Calgary Flames tomorrow night at Pepsi Center. Tomorrow's contest will kick off a five-game homestand.

AVS & WILD Today is the first of four meetings between the Avalanche and Wild in 2017-18 (two home/away). This year marks the first time that the Avs have ever faced the Wild fewer than five times in a season. In fact, there were many years that these division rivals played six and sometimes eight games against each other. Dallas and St. Louis are the only Central Division teams that play the Avalanche five times (the others are all four).

MACK THE KNIFE Nathan MacKinnon has 20 points (6g/14a) in his last 10 contests, the first Avalanche player to record 20 points in a span of 10 team games since Joe Sakic from March 20 to April 9, 2006 (7g/13a). MacKinnon has recorded 17 points (4g/13a) in nine games this month, tied for second in the NHL, while his 13 assists lead all players in November. Nathan's 17 points are also a career high for any month. The 22-year-old was named the NHL's Third Star of the Week on Monday after collecting seven points (2g/5a) in three games last week, which included a career-high four-assist and five-point effort against the Washington Capitals on Nov. 16. MacKinnon was the first Colorado player to be named one of the NHL's weekly stars since Semyon Varlamov from Jan. 18-24, 2016.

BACK-TO-BACK The Avs are playing back-to-back games for the sixth time this season, as they face the Wild this afternoon before hosting the Flames tomorrow night at Pepsi Center. Colorado is 2-2-1 in the first contest of a back-to-back this year and 2-3-0 in the second. The Avs will play 11 back-to-back games this season.

DAY-DREAM BELIEVER Today is the fourth of 12 afternoon games for the Avalanche this season, the club's most daytime tilts since 2008-09 (also 12). Colorado is 1-2-0 so far in day games, all of which have taken place on the road. The Avs are scheduled for seven home afternoon contests, equaling the most in Avalanche history (also 1998-99 and 2002-03). This afternoon's "Black Friday" contest is one of four weekday matinees for the Avs this season. Colorado played in Boston on Columbus Day (Monday, Oct. 9), played in Las Vegas on Nevada Day (Friday, Oct. 27) and will host the Ducks on Martin Luther King Jr. Day (Monday, Jan. 15).

MINUTE BY MINUTE Erik Johnson leads the club in average ice time at 26:32, fifth-best in the NHL, and leads the league in shifts-per-game at 32.3. EJ logged a career-high 30:48 of ice time on Sunday night in Detroit, the most minutes by an Avalanche skater since Scott Hannan played 32:33 on April 7, 2009 at San Jose. EJ has scored a goal in each of his last two games, his first two-game goal streak since Feb. 14-17, 2016.

CLIMBING THE D CHARTS Tyson Barrie tallied his 200th NHL point on Oct. 28 against Chicago, becoming the sixth blueliner in franchise history to reach that milestone. With 207 points, Tyson is now one shy of tying Rob Blake for fourth place among franchise defensemen.

HOME, SWEET HOME Colorado is 7-1-1 at home this season, 7-1-0 at Pepsi Center (OT loss to Senators on Nov. 10 in Sweden technically counted as a home game). Colorado has won its last five outings at Pepsi Center and is unbeaten in its last six home contests overall. The Avs have scored 40 goals on home ice (4.44 average), scoring three or more goals in all nine contests. The Avalanche's home power play (27.8%) and penalty kill (92.6%) both rank fourth in the NHL. The Avs' PK unit had a streak of 20 consecutive kills on home ice from Oct. 11 to Nov. 16.

HOME IS WHERE THE HEART IS Gabriel Landeskog (7g/5a), Nathan MacKinnon (4g/12a) and Mikko Rantanen (4g/11a) have combined for 43 points (15g/28a) in nine home games. Landeskog has a current six-game home point streak (6g/3a) and MacKinnon has 14 points (4g/10a) in his last five home contests.

TOP LINE SHINES IN WIN OVER CAPITALS Colorado's top line of Gabriel Landeskog—Nathan MacKinnon—Mikko Rantanen combined for 12 points (5g/7a) in the 6-2 victory over the Capitals on Nov. 16. A look at the trio that night: • MacKinnon's five points (1g/4a) were a career high and the most by an Avalanche player since Dec. 9, 2007, when Milan Hejduk (6) and Paul Stastny (5) put up that many against the St. Louis Blues. MacKinnon's four assists were also a personal best and the most by a Colorado player since T.J. Galiardi had four helpers on Feb. 2, 2010 vs. Columbus. • Landeskog's hat trick was the first of his NHL career and the second by an Avs player this season (Matt Nieto, Oct. 24 vs. Dallas). Landeskog's first goal came 17 seconds into the first period, the fastest goal to begin a game by an Avalanche player since Feb. 15, 2009 (Ian Laperriere at Detroit, 0:16). Landeskog's second marker came on a penalty shot, the first penalty-shot goal of his career (now 1-for-2) and the first successful penalty shot by a Colorado player since March 6, 2010 (Chris Stewart vs. St. Louis). • Rantanen set career highs in points (4) and assists (3). The 21-year-old was the youngest Avalanche player to record a four-point game since Matt Duchene (20) on Nov. 4, 2011 at Dallas.

YOUTH IS SERVED The Avs are the second-youngest team in the NHL with an average age of 25.7 (rosters as of Nov. 23, includes IR).

25.1 Columbus 25.7 Colorado 26.0 Carolina

WORKING OVERTIME The Avs are 2-1 in games that go beyond regulation this year (1-1 in OT, 1-0 in shootout) and 10-5 over the last two seasons. The Avs are 16-6 in their last 22 shootouts and 43-15 in their last 58. Colorado owns the highest shootout percentage all time (39.5) and third- highest save percentage (.716).

RECORD NIGHT FOR VARLY Semyon Varlamov made a career-high 57 saves on Nov. 2 against Carolina, the most stops by a goaltender in Avalanche history. He broke his own mark of 54 saves set on Jan. 6, 2015 at Chicago. It was the second-highest saves total in franchise history, as Quebec's Ron Tugnutt turned aside 70 at Boston on March 21, 1991. Varly's 57-save effort was the most in a HOME game in Avalanche/Nordiques history and the most saves by an NHL goaltender this season.
