THIS BOWL WAS GOING TO BE DIFFERENT. In Fall 2007, college football in Orlando experienced a surge of support thanks to the completion of a new, on-campus stadium at the University of Central Florida. The community enthusiasm inspired a group of Orlando leaders and philanthropists — many of who, were UCF alums — to bring a new college bowl game to Orlando and to make it unique by directly tying it to a charitable cause.

That goal became a reality in December 2015 with the inaugural AutoNation Cure Bowl kicking off between Georgia State and San Jose State. The game featured a bounty of big plays on special teams, which was only appropriate on a night dedicated to raising money for a special cause.

During the game a spotlight was shined on the fight against breast cancer with survivors of the disease and family members included in pregame and halftime ceremonies.

In addition, AutoNation CEO Mike Jackson and his wife Alice, who is a breast cancer survivor, presented a check for $1 million to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation (BCRF). The Orlando Sports Foundation, led by executive director Alan Gooch and president Megan Dowdy, also presented a check to the Myra Bibblowit, CEO of the BCRF and Dr. Annette Khaled of the UCF College of Medicine, for $150,000, which was the largest single donation ever made by a bowl game to a charitable cause.

In the second game in 2016, AutoNation and Orlando Sports Foundation came together to present a $1.15 million check to BCRF, raising the two-year contributions from the contest to $2.3 million. That contest featured UCF, which is the alma mater of Executive Director Alan Gooch, and Arkansas State in front of a crowd of 27,213. 4 2017 CURE BOWL MEDIA PROSPECTUS CURE BOWL TIMELINE MAY 28, 2008

The league is also a permanent part of the “Group of Five” conferences 20 2017 CURE BOWL MEDIA PROSPECTUS (joining the American Athletic Conference, the Mountain West Conference, the Mid-American Conference and Conference USA) that sends its highest-rated champion to a “New Year’s Six” bowl game every season.

The league has secured ties to no fewer than five bowl games, having added three bowl games each of the last three years. In addition to the potential of the College Football Playoff, the league has guaranteed berths in the R L Carriers Bowl, the Dollar General Bowl in Mobile, Ala., the Raycom Media Camellia Bowl in Montgomery, Ala., the AutoNation Cure Bowl in Orlando, and the NOVA Home Loans in Tucson, Ariz.

Bowl partnerships have been significant for the conference, but bowl wins have added an extra level of prestige. In 2016 the league compiled the best record among the “Group of Five” in bowl games with a 4-2 record, one that included wins over teams from the top-rated American Athletic Conference, the second-rated Mountain West and the Mid- American in the postseason.

The Sun Belt’s commitment to academic excellence remains a hallmark, with the league and its institutions annually rewriting the Sun Belt record book for grade-point averages and academic honors. This past spring, a record- tying 14 league programs were recognized for outstanding performance in the classroom, with those teams earning NCAA Public Recognition Awards for posting APR scores in the top 10 percent of their sport nationally.

Coastal Carolina joins Appalachian State, Arkansas State, Georgia Southern, Georgia State, UL Lafayette, UL Monroe, South Alabama, Texas State and Troy to give the league 10 football-playing members. Little Rock and UT Arlington compete in all sports as non-football members. That group gives the Sun Belt a mix of the “old” and the “new,” with many long-time Sun Belt institutions – South Alabama is a charter member dating back to 1976 – continuing to have success and a solid corps of conference newcomers ready to make their marks on league and national levels.

The varied campuses and locations reflect another league strength – its diversity. The mix of regions and regional cultures provide a rare opportunity for league student-athletes and staff members to experience many environments.

Proud alumni, thousands of student-athletes and staff members at a dozen institutions, are proof that the Sun Belt Conference gains stature with every year and provides the promise of future success with every sunrise. It is a league of opportunity and a league of excitement, and “Together We Rise” has never been more true or more appropriate.
