The U.S. is often deemed the land of opportunity where everyone has the chance to achieve the American dream. While this view of capitalism is a nice, albeit gullible, senti- ment, factors such as education, trends of homogenous relation- ships, accessibility to resourc- es and emotional support trans- form that sentiment into an idea only daydreamers have. Even though finding success in America’s capitalistic cul- ture is often represented as a long-distance race where those who are skilled and work hard are able to get ahead, we also have to take into account the fact that nobody starts on a lev- el playing field. While some come from back- grounds that set them up to suc- ceed with ease, others come with inherited obstacles that can be physically and emotion- ally draining.
