He took a few seconds to gather himself before taking questions, then shed more tears during the interview. “This is special,” Hosford said. “I know what Faulkner has put into this program. These kids deserve this. This school deserves this. Columbia High School is going to Lakeland. It’s been a long time coming, but basketball is in the Final Four. It’s unbelievable.” Friday’s game against the Buccaneers was personal for Hosford. As a junior on the Columbia bas- ketball team in 1995, Hosford and CHS faced the Buccaneers on the road in the second round of the play- offs. The Tigers had a strong shot at making state that season, but they ran into a problem against Mainland. “They had Vince Carter,” Hosford said. “They beat us by 51. I remem- ber it. Their head coach now (Joe Giddens) played on that team. I remember him. He became the school’s principal in 2016, but his passion for CHS basketball is strong as ever. “He told me Thursday in his office that he’s been waiting for this his whole life,” Faulkner said Hosford. “He’s Lake City born. It’s been 52 years since this school went to the Final Four, so it’s his entire life. “And he’s a big basketball guy. Played here, coached here, all that. So it was really important not only to us, but to him. And having a principal like him who’s bought into your pro- gram is an amazing thing.” After Mainland beat CHS in 1995, Faulkner actually watched Carter and the Buccaneers play in the Final Four en route to their state championship. Now he’ll take his Tigers to Lakeland after a five-decade drought. Hosford will be behind them every step of the way. “I feel like I’ve been a part of this program since 1993 when I was in school,” Hosford said. “Then I came back as a coach and now as principal, I wanted to see this happen so bad. “To watch them be able to do this tonight at home, as you can see, it means a lot to me. Columbia County’s newest hotel is also one of its largest.

By TONY BRITT [email protected]

After months of construc- tion, Lake City’s newest hotel is only weeks away from welcoming its first guests. The La Quinta Inn and Suites by Wyndham Lake City is scheduled to open in April. The hotel was brought to the area by the Morpheus Group. The Morpheus Group, which was founded in 2007 and based in Lake City, was established to develop and manage hotels throughout the United States. By the later portion of 2020, the group’s portfolio will include nine hotels and more than 1,000 rooms in strategically located destinations. The group’s port- folio includes several award-winning franchises and hospitality brand fam- ilies, including: Marriott International, Hilton Worldwide, InterContinental Hotels Group, Wyndham Worldwide and Choice Hotels International. “La Quinta, as a brand, was purchased by Wyndham Hotels in 2018. So, we’ll be part of the Wyndham Hotel family,” said Rod Butler, Morpheus Group Chief Operating Officer. With the hotel opening only weeks away, a job fair has been scheduled to fill staffing vacancies at the new facility. “We will be conducting a job fair on March 23 at the Holiday Inn and Suites Lake City from 12 - 4 p.m.,” Butler said. “We have 25 positions to fill including team mem- bers for house keeping, maintenance, front desk and the breakfast staff.” The La Quinta in Lake City will be a six-story hotel, with 95 guest rooms. “It will be one of the larger hotels in town,” Butler said. In addition, the hotel will be unique even among other La Quinta Inn and Suites facilities. “The design of the hotel is the Del Sol prototype,” Butler said. “It’s La Quinta’s
