  • CJ1132 - Kenya Nyeri Karatina Double Washed Crown Jewel July 24Th, 2017 | See This Coffee Online Here
CJ1132 - Kenya Nyeri Karatina Double Washed Crown Jewel July 24th, 2017 | See This Coffee Online Here Intro by Chris Kornman Nyeri coffees are almost always at the top of a cupper’s list of favorites, and this exceptional coffee from the Karatina Factory (aka Washing Station) is unquestionably the cream of the crop. Described as having a prototypical Kenya profile, an argument could be made that this coffee is the standard against which to measure the rest. The flavor profile reads like a summer music festival lineup of classic Kenya flavor notes, opening with juicy blackberry, savory sundried tomato, and blackcurrant jam, and headlined by zesty-sweet ruby red grapefruit. Karatina belongs to a small but exceptional Cooperative Society called Barichu that includes Gaturiri and Gatomboya factories and together represent fewer than 1000 smallholder farming families. The farms and factories are located within Central Kenya’s Nyeri county, bordered on the west by the Aberdares range, and on the northeast by Mount Kenya. In all of Africa, only Kilimanjaro tops the maximum elevation of Mount Kenya. Smallholders like those that contribute to Karatina tend to measure their plots by number of trees rather than acreage, averaging around 250 coffee plants per plot. Many are inter-cropping to improve the biodiversity of the region and the security of their harvest, planting banana, grevillea, and macadamia in addition to coffee. Kenya’s auction system elevates the value of exceptional coffees, and keeps the country’s coffee margins high, stable, and independent of the volatile C Market. Like most Kenyan growing regions, coffee in Nyeri benefits from its equatorial location and two distinct annual rainy seasons, resulting in a main crop in the winter and a “fly” crop harvested in the summer.

  • Information Systems Education in Kenya: Students’ Specialization Choice Trends (A Case Study of Kenya Polytechnic University College)
International Journal of Education and Development using Information and Communication Technology (IJEDICT), 2013, Vol. 9, Issue 3, pp. 137-161 Information systems education in Kenya: Students’ specialization choice trends (a case study of Kenya Polytechnic University College) Atieno A. Ndede-Amadi Technical University of Kenya, Nairobi, Kenya ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to determine the time and level of Information Systems (IS) awareness among Kenyan university students and the choice of IS as a field of specialization. The study posited that the choice of a field of specialization is dependent upon a student’s awareness of its existence, its utilization in the real world, its career opportunities, and its strategic importance to the country’s economic development agenda. It posited further that early IS awareness could have a positive impact on the choice of IS as a field of specialization. The underlying assumptions were that the time of IS awareness as a field of specialization among Kenyan university business students was late and levels low, leading to possible low levels of choice of IS as a field of specialization. Using the survey method, the case study found late and low levels of IS awareness as a field of specialization among university business students. Future studies linking time and levels of IS awareness with choice of IS as a filed of specialization and with existence of requisite IS skills in the country (or lack thereof) are suggested. Keywords: Specialization, Awareness, Systems Analytical Skills, Joint Admissions Board, Public Universities, University Colleges, Parallel Programmes. 1. INTRODUCTION 1.1 The History of Information Systems Although the history of Information Systems (IS) as a subject of study only spans six decades, it is among disciplines that have done much towards advancing development of the human race (Jorgenson and Vu, 2009).

TESSEMA, Chief Transport Engineer, RDGE.3 Preparation Team E&S Team Member: E.B. KAHUBIRE, Social Development Officer, RDGE4 /SNSC 1 PROJECT TITLE: KENOL – SAGANA – MARUA ROAD PROJECT PROJECT NUMBER: P-KE-DB0-037 COUNTRY: KENYA CATEGORY: 1 CATEGORY: 1 Sector: PICU Project Category: 1 2 1. INTRODUCTION 1.1. The Kenol – Sagana – Marua Road is part of the “Great North Road” from Mombasa, through Nairobi and on to Moyale - and hence to Ethiopia and Addis Ababa. It forms part of the 800km stretch between Nairobi and Moyale and is situated in the three counties of Muranga, Kirinyaga and Nyeri. The road starts at the junction with C71 (Kenol) and traverses through the trading centres of Makutano (Junction A2/B6), Sagana, Karatina before terminating at Marua (Junction A2/B5). 1.2. The existing road is a single carriageway to bitumen standards. It is a constriction – an impediment to flow of the high traffic experienced between Nairobi and Isiolo/Nyeri towns as well as other roads serving off shoot towns like Embu, Meru, Mwea, Kerugoya, Kutus, Kagio, Baricho, Kagumo,Mukurweini, Tumutumu among others that connect to this arterial road at various points. The road therefore requires upgrading to dual carriageway to absorb and serve this traffic and support the socio-economic growth of the area. The route from the Port of Mombasa to Addis Ababa, via Nairobi, Isiolo and Moyale, holds economic advantages for Kenya in her trade with Ethiopia.

This study aimed to establish the level of food insecurity among Karatina University students and the coping strategies employed. A nutrition survey research design and random sampling was done with a sample size of 94 students, who resided within the university. Proximate composition by AOAC methods and nature of frequently consumed foods was determined. Dietary and non-dietary coping strategies to food insecurity were established. The percentage of students who were food insecure was 27.9% as evidenced by skipping a meal more than once every week of the month due to lack of enough money. Also, 22.3% borrowed foods from friends and neighbours, 48.9% stuck to simple and affordable meals, which were either, rice+beans/green grams or “ugali”+cabbage/ leafy green vegetables or “ugali”+beans/green grams.
