BCFC Week Eight Summary By Ryan Watters – BCFC Media Coordinator

The game of the week in the Football Conference was in Langley as playoff positioning was at stake, as the hometown Rams would be stunned by the visiting Westshore (Victoria) Rebels 35-28. Both teams are now 4-4.

Most teams run the ball in hopes it opens up the passing attack, however the Rebels on Saturday night started with the run and didn’t look back as they would combine for 357 yards on the ground against a very big and quick Rams defence.

Two time conference player of the week, running back Greg Morris would lead the Rebels with 21 carries for 152 yards and a major. Niles Goguen would carry 12 times for 136 yards and a touchdown. In all, the Rebels ran 42 times using six different ball carriers.

Rebels quarterback Cat Todorovich returned from an injury to finish nine of 15 for 190 yards and would throw three touchdown passes. Kyle Pich, Chris McCormick and Vinne Cannata would haul in the majors; Cannata’s was a 57 yard bomb.

Mike Barry would lead the Rebels defence with five solo tackles, while Samuel Narkaj added two sacks and two tackles. Michael Hansen forced the only Rams turnover as he picked off a pass.

The Rebels jump to 4-4 and in a third place tie with the Rams. The Rebels will travel to Kamloops to face the 1-7 Broncos on Saturday.

With the loss the Langley Rams snap their four game winning streak and drop back to .500. Quarterback Brandon Leyh completed just five passes on Saturday night, but compiled 140 yards and two touchdowns, including an 85 yarder to Steven Martinez. Oddly enough Nick Downey would also score a touchdown from 85 yards out, but his was a hand off.

Two of Leyh’s completions were caught by Kyle Albertini for 31 yards and a touchdown while five other receivers hauled in single passes.

On the ground, Downey’s 85 yard touchdown was the highlight as the Rams would gather 162 yards in total. Malcolm Freeman rumbled five times for 28 yards, 22 of which were on one carry.

The Rebels defence did create three turnovers as Scott Puffer and Spensor Farbatuk jumped on fumbles and Arie Nakagawa added to a career game after picking off a pass. He would also make eight tackles and record an assist. Joe Patko made six solo tackles and Carlo Graziano had five tackles and a forced fumble.

Also on Saturday the stayed undefeated thanks to 75-0 shutout of the Chilliwack Huskers. The Raiders offense used the ground attack to great success compiling 356 yards. Rookie Alex Jobson (pictured) led the way with seven carries for 120 yards and a touchdown, while Aston Galloway scored two touchdowns on just two carries for 60 yards. The conference rushing leader Jordan Botel carried four times for 54 yards and a major.

Quarterback Jordan Yantz finished eight of 14 for 141 yards and two more touchdowns. He would set another BCFC record, as his total gives him 7,004 yards over the course of his four year career. He becomes the only BCFC quarterback to throw over 7,000 yards. The CJFL record is 9,370 yards held by John Makie, an ex- who played from 2001-2004. Yantz’s 7,004 yards puts him fifth all time.

His favourite target on Saturday afternoon was Dustin Pederson who caught four balls for 78 yards. Pederson would then move to the quarterback position completing two of two for 32 yards a major. Andrew Smith and Whitman Tomusiak both caught two passes and a touchdown.

The Raiders special teams would also factor in on the scoreboard as Taylor Favel returned a punt 66 yards to the house.

Defensively the Raiders held the Huskers to just 34 yards on the ground as the longest gain would be seven yards. They would create four turnovers as Cody Biduke, Brandon Larocque and Dylon Chapdelaine picked off passes and Spencer Riche recovered a fumble. The “D” would tally five sacks led by Evan Foster who had two.

The 8-0 Raiders will stay at home on Saturday afternoon and host the 4-4 Langley Rams.

For the first time this season the Chilliwack Huskers were shut-out compiling just 150 yards of total offence. Quarterback Adann Hendrickson was eight of 22 for 72 yards, while back-up David Hollinshead finished six of nine for 89 yards. The two quarterbacks would find Dylan Boykowich and Ben Skerrett four times each. Boykowich tallied 52 yards, while Skerrett gained 42 yards.

Defensively the shorthanded Huskers would sack Yantz twice as Curtis Schindel and Cole Herrmann each tallied one. Six Huskers had multi-tackle games; Buomkuoth Matuet-Samuel, Schindel, Tanner Hamade and Jayson Bates would make three tackles each.

The 0-8 Huskers will welcome the 7-1 on Saturday. Photo courtesy of Mijen Multimedia The lone Sunday game in Week 8 was in as the Okanagan Sun won their seventh game of the year with a convincing 50-6 win over the .

The Sun would use a 49 point first half on route to the victory. Quarterback Jeremy Mraovic was an impressive 13 of 15 for 324 yards and four touchdowns. He would find Tommy Howes and Dan Turek twice each for majors. Mraovic would also score on a one yard plunge.

Turek would lead the receiver core with four catches for 114 yards, while Howes made five receptions for 69 yards.

171 of their 504 yards were on the grou nd as the Sun used 10 different rushers. Arman Bokitch had 11 carries for 69 yards and Evin Polack rushed four times for 28 yards. Defensive lineman Steven Doege recorded his third rushing touchdown of the season on his third carry of the year.

The Sun defence would get on the scoreboard on the final play in the first half. Defensive back Robbie Yochim would return a 32 yard pick six. Carson Park and Brennan Van Nistelrooy also would intercept passes while Josh Richardson picked up a fumble.

Doege recorded three more sacks for his league leading ninth. He currently has 30.5 in his career, six behind the CJFL record of 36.5 with two games to play.

With the loss the Broncos lose their sixth straight and are officially eliminated for the playoff picture.

The offense would compile 173 yards, most of which on the ground. Seven rushers would tally 142 yards led by Mike McMaster who ran seven times for 74 yards, while Joel Mukendi rushed five times for 46 yards.

The Broncos would get on the scoreboard in the fourth quarter as Stephen Schuweiler found Derek Yachison for a touchdown. Schuweiler was the third and best QB of the afternoon finishing four of seven for 49 yards.

Defensively the Broncos saw a lot of playing time led by Drew Markortoff and his 10 tackles. Tyler Lee would make six tackles while Derek Apps recorded the lone turnover intercepting a pass.

BCFC Players of the Week

The British Columbia Football Conference is pleased to announce their “VidSwap.com Players of the Week” for Week Eight of the 2011 season.

For the third time this year Westshore Rebels running back Greg Morris has been named the BCFC Offensive Player of the Week. Morris once again carried the Rebels load, leading them to their fourth win of the season in an impressive 35- 28 victory in Langley. Morris carried 21 times for 151 yards and a major against a very quick and hard hitting Rams defence. His average run was 7.2 yards allowing the Rebels to try various things on offence.

Defensively a number of players had outstanding games; however a Rams’ linebacker was a head above the others. The BCFC Defensive Player of the Week is Arie Nakagawa who led the club with eight solo tackles, one assist and an interception for 29 yards in a losing cause. Nakagawa has been a force of the Rams this season and is finally awarded for his tireless efforts with his first player of the week award. The Vancouver Island Raiders were the beneficiaries of great special teams play on the weekend, specifically the BCFC Special Teams Player of the Week, returner Taylor Flavel. Yantz in the 7,000 Club By Ryan Watters – BCFC Media Coordinator

He continues to re-write the record book as Raiders quarterback Jordan Yantz has set a new BCFC record.

On Saturday afternoon Yantz completed eight passes for 141 yards, giving him 7,004 in his four year career. He becomes the first BCFC quarterback to reach the 7,000 yard plateau, setting a new conference record. He would pass Kenhoong Yiem who threw for 6,964 yards with the Abbotsford Air Force from 2001-2005,

Yantz’s total is good for fifth spot on the all time Canadian Junior Football League (CJFL) record list. Ex-Regina Thunder John Makie holds the league’s top mark with 9,370 yards. Makie played in the CJFL from 2001-2004 and spent some time with the Victoria Rebels. Yantz still has two games left this season, but will face two very difficult defences in the Langley Rams and Okanagan Sun.

Yantz is eligible to return to the Raiders next year.

It is also worth noting that Raiders QB Jordan Yantz is one touchdown pass away from setting a new CJFL All Time mark for career passing touchdowns, with 82. He will pass Tony Gagnon who played for the (1980-85).

PFC Week Seven in Review By Tom Hallick – PFC Media Coordinator

Calgary Colts – 49 @ – 33 September 25 @

Sunday’s game was a classic offense versus defense match-up as the Rifles offense confronted a stingy Colts defense. But while the Rifle offense put a few dents in the Calgary armour, it was Clayton Masikewich & company that were too much for the Rifle defense on this Sunday and the result was a 49-33 Calgary victory.

The home side scored first as it worked into a gusty south wind as Ryan Marsch found Kurt Goodrich for a 6-yard touchdown and add the Brad Mikoluff point after; it was 7-0 nearly 3 minutes in. The Colts would tie the score in short order as Clayton Masikewich found Ben Hnatiuk open and Hnatiuk scooted down the sideline for a 36-yard major. Calgary took their first lead later in the period as rookie pass-catcher Mac Sarro took an arrow from Masikewich and scored on 53-yard pass-and-run to make it 14-7. The air show continued on the next Rifle drive as Marsch found Alex Vitt for a 63-yard bomb that took it down to the Colt 22. On a 3rd-and-2 at the Calgary 14, Marsch executed a perfect play- action fake and ran 14 yards to paydirt to make it a 14-14 game after one quarter.

Winnipeg regained the lead 4:06 into the second quarter as Mikoluff made good on a 26-yard field goal. But only 2 plays after that, Clayton Masikewich threw a quick hitch along the line of scrimmage to Rodreke Joseph, who would weave his way 75 yards to put the Colts back in front to stay at 21-17. Fabian would give up a safety going into the wind to make it a 2-point game; but would hit a 32-yard field goal to give the Colts a 5-point edge at the half.

The third quarter would tell the tale as the Rifles had the wind, but were only to able to muster a 58-yard Mikoluff single on a missed field goal, while the Colts would tally a baker’s dozen as Fabian notched a pair of field goals and backup pivot Jeremy Long dashed 13 yards for the score that put Calgary up 37-20 after 3. After Mikoluff gave up a safety, the Rifles would get a major as Matt Lariviere took a 1-yard pass from Marsch to draw within 12. But Calgary tailback Cuong Thai Lieu, who the Rifles defense kept in check for most of the day, erupted in the 4th, going 31 yards for a score to restore the 19-point margin with under 2 minutes remaining. Fabian would round out the Colt scoring with his 4th placement of the afternoon from 29 yards away 3 plays after a Marsch interception. Marsch would score his 2nd TD of the day with 16 seconds left, but a 2-point try went incomplete.

Marsch went 26-50 for 425 yards with 2 touchdowns and a pair of picks. 2 Rifles receivers had 100-yard receiving days; Alex Vitt had 8 grabs for 126 yards, while Brett Carter had 5 for 106. Martin Hovi had 71 yards on a dozen carries. The Rifle offense racked up 516 yards, while the Colts picked up 412.

Masikewich went 13-27 for 217 yards with 2 majors and an interception. Lieu ran 20 times for 128 yards, while Joseph was Masikewich’s go-to guy with 5 grabs for 52 yards.

Winnipeg closes out their home schedule next Sunday as they host the 6-0 Hilltops at noon. The Colts will head to Regina next week.

Regina Thunder – 42 @ Edmonton Huskies – 4 – September 25 @ Clarke Park

The Thunder came into Sunday’s game looking to get back to the .500 mark, while the Huskies looked to break their losing streak which stands at 29.

Regina conceded a single from Jonathan Heidebrecht on the game’s opening kickoff, but after that it was all Thunder as they took a 2-1 lead on a safety at the 11:20 mark. Camille Lagimodiere scored a major on the final play to vault Regina into a 9-1 lead. Receiver Clay Cooke would cash in for his first of 2 TD catches from Asher Hastings who started in place of an injured Wyatt Catley. Ben Koot would give the Thunder a 17-point lead with a 45-yard field goal.

The Thunder would crank it up again in the third frame as Cooke & Will Heward each found paydirt, while Huskie kicker Heidebrecht was good on a 36-yard field goal to make it a 32-4 game after three.

Regina rounded out the scoring as Koot was good on a 43-yard field goal & tailback Nick Brown added a touchdown of his own with 5 minutes left.

The Thunder head home to play Calgary, while the Huskies will host the Wildcats in a battle of out of playoff contention clubs next Saturday.

Edmonton Wildcats – 7 @ Saskatoon Hilltops – September 25 @ Gordie Howe Bowl

The Wildcats came into Gordie Howe Bowl on a high after getting their first win over their co-tenants Huskies, while the home side aimed for their sixth straight victory and put them one win away from a second straight regular season crown.

Both defenses held serve in a scoreless opening quarter and the scoreless stalemate would continue into the ninth minute of the middle fame when Hilltop pivot Chase Bradshaw got his 2nd rushing TD in as many weeks as he dashed 18 yards to the Wildcats end zone to put his club up 7-0. The Wildcat defense held the 5th-year passer to only 4 completions in 13 attempts for 100 yards and intercepted 2 passes.

Edmonton drew even as Jordan Olson, who was 13 of 19 for 218 yards in the first half, found Andrew Johnson for an 18- yard touchdown toss to knot the game at 7 after 30 minutes.

The third quarter played out exactly as the first and the clubs headed to the final 15 minutes even at 7, but the Hilltops were on the march as the quarter wrapped up and Zach Schmidt would make good on a 21-yard field goal to put the Toppers up by 3. The Cats would drive into Saskatoon territory where kicker Ryan Smith would try a game-tying 42-yard field goal with: 10 left on the clock. Saskatoon Head Coach Tom Sargeant would utilize both of his second half time outs in an attempt to “ice” Smith and it would work, as the attempt landed at the Hilltop 5. The Hilltops moved to 6-0 and head to Winnipeg next Sunday to try to lock up the regular season crown. The 1-5 Wildcats will miss the post-season dance for the second straight season and will play the Huskies for the second & final time next Saturday night.

PFC Players of the Week

www.VidSwap.com Players of the Week – Week Seven

Cuong Thai Lieu – Runningback – Calgary Colts The 3rd-year tailback was held in check early on in the first half of Calgary’s 49-33 victory in Winnipeg on Sunday afternoon. The second half however, was a different story as he blazed through the Winnipeg defense for a 120-yard afternoon on 28 carries, including a 31-yard 4th quarter touchdown run. Lieu is presently in 4th in conference rushing with 508 yards.

Ben Cressman – Linebacker – Saskatoon Hilltops Sunday’s 10-7 Saskatoon victory over the Edmonton Wildcats was a classic defensive struggle and the 4th-year linebacker & Rosetown native contributed in a huge way as he recorded 7 tackles, 2 assisted stops, a pass knockdown and a fumble recovery for a 7-yard return. The 20-point game vaulted Cressman into 3rd spot in the PFC Defensive Points Standings with 7.

Andrew Fabian – Kicker – Calgary Colts For the second time in three weeks, the 2nd-year kicker/punter has staked his claim to PFC Special Teams Player of the Week courtesy of a perfect 4-4 afternoon in the field goal department, as well as tacking on 5 converts in the Colts 49-33. Fabian regains the conference scoring lead with 58 points. The Tilley, AB product also averaged 44 yards per punt as he punted 6 times.

PFC Week Eight Preview By Tom Hallick, PFC Media Coordinator

Edmonton Wildcats (1-5) @ Edmonton Huskies (0-6) – October 1 @ 7:00 pm

The 2 Edmonton clubs meet up for the second and final time in 2011.

The Wildcats head into the first weekend of October with a very slim chance of making the playoffs. It’s still possible but the Cats will need a ton of help. They dropped a 10-7 defensive battle in Saskatoon last Sunday. Meanwhile the Huskies are playing for next year after Regina downed them 42-4 as part of last Sunday’s triple-dip.

The Cats had a terrific defensive effort in the 10-7 road loss in Saskatoon, as evidenced by defensive lineman Nathan Gardiner’s 15 points. Linebacker Ronald Mwamba knocked down 3 passes in addition to having a 17-yard interception return as a tenacious defense held Hilltops passer Chase Bradshaw to a career-low 6 completions.

Quarterback Jordan Olson had a 13 for 19 first half passing for 130 yards, but was held to only 56 yards in the final 30 minutes.

Trevor Erdmann started at quarterback in place of an injured Ben Gorniak and went 19 of 41 for 211 yards. Anthony Barrett had 7 catches for 83 yards and was the Huskies best pass catcher by far. On defense, Chance Hanson is closing in on the PFC Defensive Points crown as he has a 13-point edge on Calgary’s Stephen Dereniwski.

Saskatoon Hilltops (6-0) @ Winnipeg Rifles (3-3) October 2 @ Noon

The Hilltops have a golden opportunity to wrap up a regular season title on Sunday afternoon as they come in to Winnipeg. But the big question for the Toppers is when will they put together a game where all three areas, offense, defense and special teams come together and put out a solid 60 minute effort? For Saskatoon Head Coach Tom Sargeant, he hopes it will come this Sunday. The defense had a stellar performance last Sunday in their win at home over the Wildcats, holding them to only a second quarter major score, but the offense struggled mightily under Chase Bradshaw who completed only 6 of 24 passes for 151 yards. Regan Schuler had 73 yards along the ground and kept his hold on top spot in the conference rushing race.

The Rifles head into Sunday’s game mired in a 2-game losing streak, following a 49-33 loss to Calgary. The offense, under PFC passing leader Ryan Marsch, is clicking on all cylinders as they’ve had all season long. Marsch threw for 425 yards and a pair of touchdowns, but threw a pair of interceptions which Calgary turned into points.

As has been the case all season long, the defense again conceded a big chunk of yardage to the opposition as Calgary had over 400 yards of offense last Sunday.

Sunday’s game will likely be the final one that the Rifles will play at Canad Inns Stadium, as they’ll move in with the Bisons and Blue Bombers into the new stadium currently under construction at the University of for the 2012 season. The Rifles would like nothing more than to knock Saskatoon from the unbeaten ranks as a way to close out 10 seasons of action at the stadium.

Calgary Colts (5-1) @ Regina Thunder (3-3) October 2 1:00 pm

Sunday’s other contest features a Calgary squad who rebounded quite nicely from their loss to Saskatoon by downing Winnipeg in impressive fashion against a Regina club that has survived a rough front half of their season to right the ship, so to speak.

The Calgary defense did get dented a bit in the Winnipeg win, but the offense under pivot Clayton Masikewich, the running of Cuong Thai Lieu & Rodreke Joseph leading the Colt receiving corps, had their best performance of the season last week as they racked up over 400 yards of offense and 49 points.

Last Sunday against the Edmonton Huskies, second-string quarterback Asher Hastings passed for 265 yards and 3 touchdowns in place of Wyatt Catley, who sustained a concussion in the win over Winnipeg. Thunder Head Coach Erwin Klempner said on CKRM Regina’s Sportscage earlier this week that it looks as if Catley will be back under centre for the game against Calgary.

Slotback Will Heward snagged his 4th touchdown reception in the last two games in the rout over the Huskies.

The theme of the week for the four games in the OFC: lopsided – as all four matchups proven to be routs over the opposition.

The Twin Cities Predators’ Keaton Jones provided a lone bright spot in an otherwise gloomy game against the Windsor AKO Fratmen, in which the Fratmen throttled the Predators 52-7.

Jones returned a Windsor missed field goal for 115 yards to score the Predators’ only touchdown near the end of a busy first quarter in which Windsor had already put 14 points on the board. QB Cory Prince made the extra-point with a kick in place of regular kicker Charles Smith, who sat out the game due to injury.

Windsor’s attempt to go for it on third down resulted in a turn over to start the second quarter, but the spark of momentum created by Jones was soon extinguished as Prince’s next pass was picked off by Windsor’s Andrew Lewandowski.

The Preds’ were plagued by penalties and injuries throughout the game, while the Windsor starters racked up the points. Perennial CJFL Player of the Week Beau Lumley who brought in two of the four touchdown passes completed by QB Christian Hackney in the first half. Lumley's night was done at the half, and he ended with 130 yards rushing, two 32 yard TD catches, and 207 total all-purpose yards.

Hackney found Shayne Rice for a touchdown just 1:40 into the second half, and Joel Archer (pictured below) for his second major of the game a short time later. With each of Dan Colella’s extra point attempts good, Windsor had sealed a 43-7 lead by the end of the third quarter, on five completed touchdown passes by Hackney, who tallied 295 yards in the air.

Prince had some solid passes to get something started in the fourth, but came away empty handed from a third down attempt, while the Fratmen added to their lead with a safety, and finally, a touchdown by Shayne Stadey from a pass by second-string QB Theo Stevens, followed by the successful single point.

Saturday’s game was the first in OFC history to be live-streamed on the internet for out-of-town viewers, thanks to a huge effort by AKO Fratmen game day operations and media coordinator John DeNapoli.

Meanwhile, the Burlington Braves defence managed to shut out the Brampton Bears to post a 48-0 win and move into fourth place in the OFC standings.

The Braves’ defence allowed only two first downs to the visitors, who played most of the game in their own end, with poor field position.

Richard Beckstead led the shutdown with four tackles, helped on another and picked up a fumble. Eddie Charles added another four tackles and Eddie Wilson forced a fumble which he also recovered. Emanuel Songue had a pick with an additional 12-yard run.

The Braves offence was ready to go after special teams put them up by a point on the opening kick off, with Kevin Kitamura’s kick bouncing through the end zone.

The final score did not reflect the close match up of the first quarter, with the Braves scoring on a Lucas Spagnuolo pass to Brody Essery – the first of three on the day for the wide receiver. Brampton battled back in the second quarter with two interceptions from DB Chris States, but the Brave’ defence cut the momentum short with a sack and fumble recovery which led to a Mayvon Wassel touchdown to put the Braves up 24-0. Brampton fumbled on the kickoff return and Patrick Lee scooped it up, setting up a safety on the next series.

In the second half, the Braves showcased Spagnuolo’s arm and Jason Diston’s ability to catch the long balls, with a spectacular offensive series that culminated in a Diston touchdown catch to make the score 39-0. Additional majors were posted by Essery and Kareem Blake.

The Hamilton Hurricanes also shut out the visiting St. Leonard Cougars 33-0, with the Hurricanes keeping pressure on the Cougars on both sides of the ball.

Hamilton opened the scoring with a little help from the St. Leonard club when they opted to take a knee in the end zone and conceded two points on a punt attempt. The balance of the quarter was quiet, with both offenses stalling around mid- field. The Hurricanes regrouped in the second quarter with Matt Francis connecting with Matt Coates for a 15-yard touchdown only 19 seconds into the quarter. That was the spark that the hometown team needed to get things going and they never looked back after that.

The Cougars found themselves picked off three times in the second quarter by Stephen Jordan (2) and Cody Lynch, which allowed the Hurricanes to add a 1-yard rushing touchdown from Ryan Kotar and a 32-yard field goal by Chris Bartolomeo, respectively.

The Hurricanes offense kept the momentum going in the second half with Ryan Kotar rushing 15-yards for a major and Francis connecting with Shawn Ward for an 8-yard touchdown. The Hurricanes’ defensive play remained solid as they shut down every pass attempt by the Cougars. Special teams play was electrifying with Malcolm Paul returning kicks and juking his way down field to put his team in great field position to start drives. Saturday matchup between the London Beefeaters and turned into a ground versus air battle, with the Sooners’ air assault winning out 35-3 over the Beefeaters running effort.

The Sooners posted a net offence of 347 against London’s 223 rushing yards. Sooners QB Yannick Rickli was good on 16 of 38 passes for 274 yards and three touchdowns, with no interceptions. London, meanwhile, completed only 8 of 16 pass attempts and racked up two interceptions.

But while the Beefeaters racked up 216 yards on 31 carries, their defence held the Sooners to 73 yards on the ground. Kyle Woldenberg led the Beefeaters’ running backs with 150 yards on 19 carries, but several big runs were followed by losses.

The London defense was led by veteran defensive back Chris Vanmeppelenscheppink and rookie linebacker Colton Cook with 12 defensive points each while defensive end Rob Varallo was credited with 8 defensive points. Leading all defenders in the game was Ottawa’s linebacker Martin Blanchette who racked up 21 defensive points on 10 tackles and an assist. Ottawa defensive lineman Chris Seed had two quarterback sacks.
