Renée Gilgen started her professional career as a primary school teacher, then came to the University of Waikato and completed a Postgraduate Diploma of Education with distinction, a Masters with first class honours, and today she is graduating with her PhD. While completing her doctoral studies, she also worked as a postgraduate Māori student mentor in Te Kura Toi Tangata Faculty of Education. Her specialist area of research and teaching includes working alongside Māori teachers and students in English-medium educational contexts.
