However, the mechanisms and processes that underscore faith development, which is crucial to experiencing these outcomes, are not well understood. Furthermore, most research on faith development in adolescents and emerging adults is based on quantitative data and fails to examine the influence of developmental contexts on faith development. To address this, a racially diverse New England sample of 30 highly religious Christian, Jewish, New World faiths, and Muslim families were interviewed regarding their faith and family life. Focusing specifically on the faith development of the adolescents and emerging adults (age 12-25; N = 43) in this sample, qualitative coding and analysis revealed three key themes: (a) contexts, (b) personal beliefs, and (c) personal practices. Qualitative data is provided to explain each theme. Implications for religious institutions, families, and social service organizations are discussed. iv Chapter 1 - Introduction Within the past 10 years, social scientists have begun to call for more research into the development of religiosity (Benson, Roehlkepartain, & Rude, 2003; Dollahite, Marks, & Goodman, 2004; King, 2003; Smith & Snell, 2009). Religiosity is a three-part construct composed of religious beliefs, religious practices, and participation in a religious community (Marks, 2005). At the present time, the largest and most helpful data set on adolescent (age 12- 17) and emerging adult (age 18-25) religiosity is the National Survey of Youth and Religion, a longitudinal qualitative and quantitative research project that includes three waves of data collection to date (Smith

The bioecological framework of human development (Bronfenbrenner, 1977) was used to guide the selection and synthesis of three relevant models linking the following outcomes to various predictors relevant to first-year-to-college women: social physique anxiety as a subcomponent of body image concerns, and fear of negative evaluation as a subcomponent of social anxiety. While several differences were found between Asian, Black, and White racial groups, the new bioecological model fit well across all racial groups, explaining between 52% and 57% of the variance in social physique anxiety, and from 40% and 47% of the variance in fear of negative evaluation. For all racial groups, social physique anxiety mediated the relation between self-esteem and fear of negative evaluation. Self-esteem was not supported as a moderator of the relation between body mass index and social physique anxiety. Results suggest the importance of assessing social physique anxiety among college women, as well as studying the bioecological model longitudinally. Further results and implications are discussed for theory, research, and practice. However, his theory underwent signif- icant changes since its first inception during the late 1970s until his death in 2005, due to which the implications that can be drawn might differ depending on what concepts (i.e. early or later) of the theory is utilized. The aim of this paper was to examine how different concepts of Bronfenbrenner’s theory have been utilized in (public) mental health research, and to analyse the value of these different uses for guiding public mental health policy and practice. A systematic search for articles that have utilized concepts of Bronfenbrenner’s theory within the field of mental health resulted in a review of 16 published papers. We found that one set of papers (N = 10) used the early concepts of ecological systems without investigating interactions between these systems, while another set of papers used the concepts of ecological systems by also investigating interactions within and between these systems (N = 4). Another limited set of papers (N = 2) utilized the later concepts of proximal processes and the PPCT model. Abstract This study explores educational psychologists’ (EPs’) perceptions of practice with children and families who have experienced domestic violence and abuse (DVA), and whether a created resource pack can support developments towards a more bioecological model. A literature review of DVA outcomes for children revealed negative impacts, alongside potential protective factors. Psychological theory for explaining these outcomes is reviewed, and whilst beneficial, each theory does not fully explain how the child develops. Bronfenbrenner’s Process, Person, Context, Time theory (2006) was suggested as a valuable basis for creating supportive resources for EP practice, to be used during assessment, intervention and evaluation. Trialled in a case study of three EPs, semi-structured interviews were used before and after the use of the resource pack, to explore potential practice changes.

    Understanding Immigration and Psychological Development: A Multilevel Ecological Approach Bryant T. Jensen ABSTRACT. Approximately one in tive children in the U.S. are born to immigrant families in which at least one parent is foreign-born. Existing theoretical frameworks suggest that immigration experiences can increase acculturative stress and lead to developmental psycholopathology in im­ migrant children. These models, however, do not account for levels in the environment that trigger this stress and/or serve as forms of resilience. Drawing from Bronfenbrenner's multilevel, bioecological model of de­ velopment, this paper presents a framework that charts environmental processes which generate or buffer acculturative stress and, therefore, me­ diate the impact of immigration on psychological well-being. Empirical research shows that Mexican immigrants, on the whole, fare better than U.S.-bom groups in terms of mental health outcomes. These results are explained in the context of the presented theoretical model. Though fur­ ther research is needed, preliminary evidence suggests that encouraging "enculturation," as opposed to "acculturation," has positive mental health repercussions for Mexican American chqdren. Further research using the presented theoretical framework as well as policies and practices that in­ corporate and leverage the cultural strengths of Mexican immigrant chil­ dren should be pursued. Krishnan * Presented at the Early Childhood Council Annual Conference 2010, “Valuing Care”, Christchurch Convention Centre, Christchurch, New Zealand, 7-9 May 2010 Early child development; A conceptual model Early Child Development: A Conceptual Model* Abstract This paper reviews different theoretical approaches - psychoanalytical, behavioral and social learning, biological, cognitive, and systems theories - to identify the key individual and environmental influences on child development. Based on this review and building from Bronfenbrenner’s ecological theory, a model is proposed that takes individual and environmental factors into consideration. Despite the complexity of the ecological model, it offers a holistic approach to analyze multilevel and interactive influences of child development. More specifically, the model incorporates a broad range of factors, multiple pathways by which they interact, and a multilevel approach. The proposed model has the potential, especially to address issues of socioeconomic inequality which can be at the core of programs and policies targeting children, at the community level. The Education For All (EFA) Development Index provides some indication that, in terms of Universal Primary Education (UPE), adult literacy, gender and quality of education are improving globally. A growing number of countries are employing comprehensive planning efforts to improve early childhood experiences and education.
