GREYSTONE BOOKS greystonebooks.com WHO WE ARE Reflections on My Life and Canada Elizabeth May

In this marriage of memoir and manifesto, Elizabeth May reflects on her extraordinary life and the people and experiences that have formed her and informed her beliefs. The book traces her development from daughter of activist parents, to waitress and cook on Cape Breton Island, to law student, lawyer, and environmentalist, and, finally, to leader of the Green Party and first elected Canadian Green Member of Parliament. As a result of these disparate formative experiences, May believes that must rescue our threatened democracy, return to our traditional role as a world leader, develop a sustainable economy, and take immediate and decisive action to address the climate crisis. Who We Are is both a fascinating portrait of a remarkable woman and an urgent call to action.

Elizabeth May is the leader of the Green Party of Canada and Member of Parliament for Saanich-Gulf Islands. She was formerly executive director of Sierra Club Canada.

2 greystonebooks.com WHERE DO CAMELS BELONG? Why Invasive Species Aren’t All Bad Ken Thompson

Where do camels belong? You may be surprised to learn that they evolved and lived for tens of millions of years in North America. Also that the leek, national symbol of Wales, was a Roman import to Britain, as were chickens, rabbits, and pheasants. These classic examples highlight the issues of “native” and “invasive” species. We have all heard the horror stories of invasives. But do we need to fear invaders? In this controversial book, Ken Thompson asks: Why do very few introduced spe- cies succeed, why do so few of them go on to cause trouble, and what is the real cost of invasions? He discusses, too, whether fear of invasive species could be getting in the way of conserving biodiversity and responding to climate change.

D r. Ken Thompson was for many years a lecturer in the Department of Animal and Plant Sciences at the University of Sheffield. He now writes and lectures on gardening and Nature/Science ecology. greystonebooks.com 3 PADDLENORTH Adventure, Resilience, and Renewal in the Arctic Wild Jennifer Kingsley

Published in partnership with the David Suzuki Foundation

Paddlenorth tells the riveting story of Jennifer Kingsley’s fifty-four-day paddling adventure on the Back River, in the northern wilderness, as she and her five companions battle raging winds, impenetrable sea ice, and treacherous rapids. The perils include rising tensions among the group, but these are tempered by grizzly sightings, icy swims, and the caribou’s summer migration. Woven through this spellbinding narrative are the harrowing accounts of earlier explorers, some of whom perished, but whose traces along the river warn us against romantic notions of the wild. Paddlenorth paints an indelible portrait of the spectacular northern landscape and eloquently explores what wilderness means to us.

“Technology is rapidly moving into our bodies,” writes cyber expert Keenan, “and this book gives a chilling look ahead into where that road may lead us—on a one-way trip to the total surrender of privacy and the commoditization of intimacy.”

Technocreep is the definitive dissection of privacy-eroding and life-invading technologies, coming at you from governments, corporations, and the person next door. Take, for example, the furor over Girls Around Me, a Russian-made iPhone app that allowed anyone to scan the immediate vicinity for girls and women who checked in on Foursquare and had poorly secured Facebook profiles. It combined this information in a way never intended by the original poster. Going to a Disney theme park? 6 greystonebooks.com THE PERSONALIZED MEDICINE REVOLUTION How Diagnosing and Treating Disease Are About to Change Forever Pieter Cullis, PhD

Every year more than 2 million North Americans are hospitalized, and more than 100,000 lose their lives, because of adverse reactions to drugs. These tragic cases stem from our one-size-fits-all approach to medicine. But who we are—our age, our sex, our size, our ethnic heritage—matters to our health. Shouldn’t our medicine be tailored to our differences? Through the stories of researchers, scientists, and patients, The Personalized Medicine Revolution explores the promising new advances in personalized medicine—healthcare based on each person’s unique genetic and molecular makeup—and the coming sea change in the way we detect and treat disease. The book also discusses the issues that patients, researchers, and governments will face as we take the next steps into this exciting future and explains what readers can do to take charge of their health. A dazzling rush through Canada’s hockey-riddled history by a new voice in Canadian literature.

In Puckstruck, Stephen Smith chronicles his wide-eyed and sometimes wincing wander through hockey’s literature, language, and history. On this journey to discover what the game has to say about who we are as Canadians, he seeks to answer some essential riddles. Can hockey make you a better person? What exactly is the Swedes’ problem? Where did the hook check go? Should those men really be permitted to keep punch- ing each other in the head? If hockey is the best of us, is it also the worst? Is there hope?

Stephen Smith’s stories about five-dollar bills and boy travel writers have appeared in Geist and McSweeney’s. He has also written for the Globe and Mail, Canadian Geographic, Outside, and the New York Times Magazine. 14 greystonebooks.com FROZEN IN TIME The Fate of the Franklin Expedition Owen Beattie and John Geiger Introduction by Margaret Atwood

International bestseller—more than 125,000 copies sold worldwide. Re-released to coincide with the renewed search for the lost Franklin Expedition ships.

Frozen in Time tells the dramatic story of how Sir John Franklin’s elite naval forces came within sight of the Northwest Passage, only to succumb to unimaginable horrors. A gripping tale of cannibalism, bureaucratic hubris, great courage, and groundbreaking science, it shows how the excavation of three sailors from the 1845–48 Franklin Expedition, buried for 138 years on the Arctic headland of Beechey Island, has shed new light on what has been one of the world’s great maritime mysteries.

In 2008, the were Team Modern under their new GM Mike Gil- lis. Cool, calculating, and unsparing with the media, Gillis swept away the tangled psychological past of the Canucks with bold innovation, remodeling Vancouver as a destination city for NHL star players. When the team took to the ice for Game 7 of the 2011 Cup Final, it seemed there was nothing they couldn’t overcome. Then came the fall. Physically exhausted and bullied by the Bruins, the Canucks succumbed 4-0. To cap the greatest season in team history, Vancouver rioted. Gillis tried a number of aggressive moves to get back to the Final, from switching Luongo for Schneider to trading players, but nothing worked. Alain Vigneault was dismissed, John Tortorella hired; Tortorella raged, fans bayed for Gillis’ head; and finally, Gillis and Tortorella were both fired. In the early 1980s, Vancouver residents were still reeling from the Clifford Olson murders when a new terror surfaced in the headlines—a serial rapist was attacking women across the city. In May 1982, with a tarnished image and few leads in their case, the Vancouver Police Department made an arrest. Ivan Henry was an ex-convict still adjusting to civilian life when he was detained on a break-and-enter charge. A short time later he found himself on trial for ten charges of sexual assault—crimes he vehemently denied committing. Making the misguided decision to forego legal representation and defend himself, Henry sealed his own fate. He spent twenty-seven years in prison before being acquitted in 2010 for lack of sufficient evidence. To this day, however, he has not been compensated or publicly exonerated. Author and arbitration lawyer Joan McEwen has spent three years interviewing Ivan Henry, investigating his case, and helping him get compensation for his hellish life behind bars. This is a powerful, heartbreaking story of justice miscarried and one True Crime man’s determined quest to win restitution for the wrongly convicted. 20 heritagehouse.ca Fm ro ClASSROOM to Battlefield Victoria High School and the First World War Barry Gough

In August 1914, Canada found itself jolted from its splendid isolation by the onrush of a European catastrophe. Victoria, British Columbia, and its high school were vaulted onto the world stage by war. Five hundred youth who had been educated at the school went to war and were forever changed by the experience. Based on hitherto unused sources, including the Victoria High School Archives, the book highlights the lives of twenty participants who saw the face of battle. It fol- lows the perils of the Canadian Army, especially in the Second Battle of Ypres, when Canadians suffered terribly from the German use of poison gas; the horrors of the Battles of Somme, Vimy Ridge, Passchendaele, and Amiens; and, at last, victory at Mons. It weaves Victoria High School’s idealistic hopes into the realities of the pain, suffering, and death in far away fields of fire, while examining legacies of the -con flict at home. This is a poignant book about war, memory, and sacrifice from one of History Canada’s preeminent writers of historical non-fiction. heritagehouse.ca 21 D aNGEROUS Spirits The Windigo in Myth and History Shawn Smallman

In the traditional Algonquian world, the windigo is the spirit of selfishness, which can transform a person into a murderous cannibal. Native peoples over a vast stretch of North America—from Virginia in the south to Labrador in the north, from Nova Scotia in the east to Minnesota in the west—believed in the windigo, not only as a myth told in the darkness of winter but also as a real danger. With the arrival of Europeans, many different groups—explorers, fur traders, missionaries, doctors, and police—encountered people who were said to have been transformed into windigos. Largely based on never-before-seen documents, including recordings of oral narratives, fur traders’ journals, trial records, missionary accounts, and anthropologists’ field notes, this book is a dark and revealing glimpse into indig- enous beliefs, cross-cultural communication, and embryonic colonial relationships. It also ponders the recent resurgence of the windigo in popular culture and its changing meaning in a modern context. 22 heritagehouse.ca CHEK Republic A Revolution in Local Television Diane Dakers

Since its beginning, Victoria’s CHEK-TV has been a trailblazer in the television industry. When it launched in 1956, it was the first television station to take to the airwaves on Vancouver Island, the first independently owned station in British Columbia, and the first station in Canada with colour telecasting capabilities. A half-century later, in 2009, CHEK became the first employee-owned television station in North America after corporate owner CanWest Global threatened to shut it down. The David-and-Goliath story made national headlines and reawakened a belief in local, independent broadcasting. In the five years since the employee purchase of the station, CHEK has weathered the challenges of independent ownership and remains proudly local, in every sense of the word. While the future of media is unpredictable and the feasibility of local television continues to be challenged, CHEK Republic is, at its core, a success story, chronicling the long history, near downfall, and rebirth of a truly one-of-a-kind media outlet.

From the era of wooden sailing ships and Europe’s golden age of exploration, the story of famed British navigator Henry Hudson tells a classic tale of courage, ambition, and treachery on the high seas. As the leader of four Arctic voyages in 1607, 1608, 1609, and 1610, Hudson searched in vain for a navigable route through the polar ice that would open the way to the riches of Asia. In his obsession to succeed, he made reckless decisions that pushed his crew to the brink, with disastrous results. The far-ranging officers of the BC Provincial Police covered an area larger than California, Oregon, and Washington combined. In Yukon, a force of nineteen Mounties were charged with upholding the law across all of Arctic Canada. As the stagecoach and dogsled gave way to the automobile and airplane, these intrepid detectives were quick to change with the times and adopt every means available to maintain peace and keep the upper hand against bootleggers, renegades, and criminal gangs. Set in frontier towns and rural communities from Vancouver Island to the Rocky Mountains to Herschel Island, Yukon, the stories in this collection reveal the real-life hardships and triumphs of policing through the boom and bust years of the early twentieth century.

Fifteen-year-old Jim Hay believes that war is a glorious adventure, and he cannot wait for his turn to fight. But as his father boldly marches off to battle in August 1914, Jim must be content to record his thoughts and dreams in his journal. All too quickly, however, Jim’s simple life begins to unravel. His father is killed in action, his mother suffers a breakdown, and when at last he does join up, it is as much to find refuge as it is to seek glory. On January 20, 2003, at 10:45 a.m., a massive avalanche in the Selkirk Range of British Columbia struck three members of two guided backcountry skiing groups and buried them. After a frantic hour of digging by those still standing, an unthinkable outcome became reality: seven people were dead. The tragedy made international news, splashing photos of the seven dead Cana- dian and US skiers on television screens and newspaper pages. The official analysis was that guide error was not a contributing factor in the accident. This interpretation was insufficient for some of the victims’ families, the public and some members of the guiding community. Buried is the assistant guide’s story. The bicycle is fast becoming a ubiquitous form of transportation in cities all over the world. But many of those bikes disappear into basements and garages when the warm months end, parked there by owners fearful of the cold, snow and ice that winter brings. But does it have to be that way? So he did some- thing about it. He pulled on some thermal underwear, dragged his bike down from the rafters of his garage and set out on a mission to answer a simple but beguiling question: is it possible to happily ride a bike in winter? 36 rmbooks.com LOST AND FOUND Adrift in the Canadian Rockies Jamey Glasnovic

For many people, moving to a mountain town is the realization of a dream, the final step in a pilgrimage to a relaxed lifestyle in a rugged and beautiful setting. After a long journey that began when he was a teenager in the 1980s with the vague idea there might be a better life somewhere “out West,” Jamey Glasnovic eventually fled the chaos and stress of the big city and tried to settle into an uncomplicated Rocky Mountain existence. A spirited amble by bicycle and on foot, inspired by the work of Bill Bryson, Lost and Found explores the heart of the Rocky Mountain Parks and examines the consequences of celebrating that beauty too effectively with mass tourism and over- ambitious development. Eschewing the convenience of motorized transportation, Glasnovic earns every kilometre that passes beneath his feet, and along the way he learns a thing or two about feeling profoundly connected to place—an experience some would describe as being home.

rmbooks.com 37 SALMON A Scientific Memoir Jude Isabella

Salmon: A Scientific Memoir investigates a narrative that is important to the identity of the Pacific Northwest coast: the salmon as an iconic species. Traditionally it’s been a narrative that is overwhelmingly about conflict. But is that always necessarily the case? Each chapter focuses on a portion of the salmon’s journey to and from their natal streams, on one of the five Pacific salmon species most commercially important to North Americans, and on the different ways scientists study the fish. Salmon is also about the scientific journey of ecologists, archaeologists and fisheries biologists and how the labs gathering data today echo coastal indigenous people who have harvested salmon successfully since the end of the last ice age.

rmbooks.com 39 AN RMB MANIFESTO AN ALTAR IN THE WILDERNESS Kaleeg Hainsworth

Kaleeg Hainsworth, an Eastern Orthodox priest with a lifetime of experience in the Canadian wilderness, grounds this manifesto in the literary, philosophical, mystical and historical teachings of the spiritual masters of both East and West, outlining the human experience of the sacred in nature. The spiritual ecology described here is fully engaged with the wilderness beyond our backyard. It is an ecology that takes in nature as “red in tooth and claw” and offers a way forward in the face of accelerating climate change. This manifesto also challenges our modern self-conception as dominators or stewards of the natural world, claiming these roles emerged from Western industrial history and are directly responsible for the environmental damage and alienation from nature we see today. The ecological scope of this book begins with a meditation on natural beauty as the divine that breathes through all aspects of life. We discover along the way that awe and mystery are so vital to the human experience of the natural world that without them we are doomed to treat nature Nature/Environment RMB | Rocky Mountain Books • October 2014 as little more than a resource, a science or a playground for recreation alone. 4.75 x 7, 168 pages 978-1-77160-036-1 • hardcover • $16.00 978-1-77160-037-8 • epub • $7.99 Kaleeg Hainsworth is an author, naturalist, podcaster and Eastern Orthodox priest. 40 rmbooks.com AN RMB MANIFESTO TECHNOLOGY AND SUSTAINABILITY Peter Denton

The developed world is increasingly obsessed with two things: electronic gadgets and our changing climate. We stand in open-mouthed awe of our technological achieve- ments while dejectedly shrugging our shoulders at the state of the planet on which we live. Our choice is clear: we need to reimagine the way we engage with the technology we create if we hope to make the world a better place. Peter Denton’s first rmb manifesto, Gift Ecology: Reimagining a Sustainable World, focused on interpersonal relationships as the foundation for a vibrant and ecologically sustainable society. In his second thought-provoking book in the series, the author challenges readers to think of our devices not merely as better rocks and sharper spears, but as profound extensions of our hearts and minds that we can use to make the world a more livable place through enlightened social media interaction, crowdfunding and other positive online engagements.

44 rmbooks.com BADLANDS An Illustrated Tribute Robert Kroetsch Photography by George Webber Essay by Aritha van Herk

Originally published in 1975, Badlands has been heralded as a comic triumph for decades. The story starts in 1916, when scientist William Dawe leads a palaeontological expedition into the badlands of Alberta, obsessed with achieving world renown by discovering dinosaur fossils. Fifty years later his daughter, Anna, enters these same badlands. During her visit to the expedition site, she exposes not only the absurdity of her father’s work but also the folly of his male ambition and attitudes. This new, beautifully produced edition of Kroetsch’s classic novel is reborn and reimagined for a contemporary audience, with stunning and haunting black and white images by master photographer George Webber accentuating the text. touchwoodeditions.com 49 THE FOURTH BETRAYAL Bruce Burrows

A suspenseful mystery set on the Pacific Northwest coast about a pipeline conspiracy that pits the everyday working man against high-level government.

When childhood best friends Ollie Swanson and Dougie Tarkenen commit larceny, they must keep it secret into their adult lives. Years later, Dougie turns up dead, appar- ently drowned in a canoe accident. Ollie is devastated. When he discovers that Dougie had made secret tapes that reveal extreme corruption at the highest levels of govern- ment, the circumstances around Dougie’s death become highly suspect, and the secret from their youth comes back to haunt Ollie. When Ollie’s life is threatened, he must figure out a way to protect himself and his family. The Fourth Betrayal is a gritty, wry, and masculine exploration of what happens when bureaucratic greed and deception threaten the livelihoods of small coastal communities.

When the body of an anti-uranium-mining activist turns up in a pile of radioactive waste, Silas Pearson must overcome both danger and his grief over his own missing wife to find the murderer.

Silas Pearson is plagued by nightmares. In them, his wife, Penelope, who has now been missing for four years, shows him where murder victims are buried across the Colorado Plateau. One such dream leads him to the Atlas Mill tailings site, outside Moab, Utah. There, Silas discovers the corpse of anti-uranium-mining activist Jane Vaughn, who went missing from Flagstaff, Arizona, buried in radioactive waste. An intriguing look into the personal letters of one of the Arctic’s most controversial explorers.

Although Arctic explorer and Hudson Bay Company surveyor John Rae (1813–1893) travelled and recorded the final uncharted sections of the Northwest Passage, he is best known for his controversial discovery of the fate of the lost Franklin Expedition of 1845. Based on evidence given to him by local Inuit, Rae determined that Franklin’s crew had resorted to cannibalism in their final, desperate days. Seen as maligning a national hero, Rae was shunned by British society. This collection of personal correspondence—reissued here for the first time since its original publication in 1953—illuminates the details of Rae’s expeditions through History/Memoir his own words. “Stories of desire, chance, promise, brought from the down below. Against the rules of heaven, what hope is there?” —from Whatever Lola Wants

Ted tells stories. High on a cloud above Mount Washington, he peers down at the Earth, listening to the memories of the mortal folk he watches. Lola, once a famous Hollywood bombshell, now a god, listens to his stories. Ted’s words capture her heart, just as she captured the hearts of her fans. Down on Earth, three families experience joy, tragedy, hope, and loss. Milton and Theresa are activists, conservationists, parents, lovers, fighters. Johnnie Cochan is a self-styled ecological leader, haunted by sadness and fear. And Carney is a disaster- recovery specialist who can quench an oil-platform fire but finds love hard to hold onto. Through their attractions and battles, their futures become bound, as Cochan’s vision for a new utopia, a massive construction project, threatens to rupture everything. Whatever Lola Wants is story about stories—those we tell others, and those that fill us up. It is also about the stories we tell ourselves and the ways they make us who we are—admired artists, despised monsters, adored immortals. brindleandglass.com 57 THE PULL OF THE MOON Julie Paul

Twelve short stories that examine what happens in the lives of characters who discover shocking truths about the people they thought they knew best.

Whether set in a cottage or a Montreal market, a graveyard or a backyard, these stories transport you into the lives of people you’ll recognize. Your neighbours may not want to make squirrels into pets or sell you a piece of the moon; your son may not be asked to donate sperm to his girlfriend’s mother; your sister may not want you to bring a dead cat across the border; you may not have an imaginary husband, a secret brother, or a friend who has turned to murder in a custody battle. But in each of these stories, people are trying to figure out how to live in a world that doesn’t always seem hospitable. With her keen poet’s eye, Paul examines human nature and animal instinct, as the characters in The Pull of the Moon try to negotiate their impulses and desires. Ulti- mately, they want what most of us want: connection, belonging, love, and forgiveness.

MOTORCYCLE THERAPY A Canadian Adventure in Central America Jeremy Kroeker

Jeremy Kroeker has travelled to nearly 30 countries with his motorcycle and done at least one outrageously stupid thing in every one. One October he rode from Canada to Panama in an attempt to flee the pain of a broken relationship. Motorcycle Therapy—A Canadian Adventure in Central America rumbles with comic adventure as two men, fleeing failed relationships, test the limits of their motorcycles and their friendship. Join the horn-honking, signal-flashing, wheelie- popping pair as they endure painful bee stings, painful snakebites and (when they talk to girls) painful humiliation.

Jeremy Kroeker is a freelance writer, speaker, and mountaineer and the award-winning author of Motorcycle Therapy—A Canadian Adventure in Central America and Through Dust and Darkness: A Motorcycle Journey of Fear and Faith in the Middle East (RMB, 2013). This is a stunning new long poem by an important Canadian poet. It is a poem of love against violence and loss. E mILY Carr in England Kathryn Bridge

At age 28, Emily Carr went to England to attend art school. She spent almost five years there, from 1899 to 1904, and during this time her life completely changed. In Emily Carr in England, historian Kathryn Bridge reveals new evidence that fills in many of the gaps in this important phase of Carr’s life, illuminating her findings with Carr’s sketches and paintings, some never before published. This book also contains three of Carr’s “funny books,” created while she was in England: “London Student Sojourn” pokes fun at life in a boarding house; “The Olsen Student” presents a series of comical drawings alongside a lengthen- ing poem; and “Kendal & I in London” is a series of sketches and verse recalling the day Carr and her friend, Hannah Kendall, tried in vain to watch the funeral procession of Queen Victoria.

Dr. Kathryn Bridge has spent her professional life at the Royal BC Museum as an archivist, historian and curator. She is the author of several books about important women in BC’s history. She also wrote the introduction to another of Emily Carr’s funny Biography books, Sister and I from Victoria to London.
