(The festival's original title was Festival of Fantastic Cinema.) The more mainstream section (called Gran Angular ) showed 12 films only as opposed to the large offering of 27 films in the Fantastic section, evidence that this genre still predominates even though it is no longer exclusive. Japan made a big showing this year in both categories. Two feature-length animated films caught the attention of Sara Martin , an English literature teacher at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona and anime fan, who reports here on the latest offerings by two of Japan's most outstanding anime film makers, and gives us both a wee history and future glimpse of the anime genre - it's sure not kids' stuff and it's not always pretty. Japanese animated feature films are known as anime. This should not be confused with manga , the name given to the popular printed comics on which anime films are often based. Western spectators raised in a culture that identifies animation with cartoon films and TV series made predominately for children, may be surprised to learn that animation enjoys a far higher regard in Japan.

  • Anime Weekend at BFI Southbank with Preview of from up on Poppy Hill
PRESS RELEASE May 2012 12/32 Anime Weekend at BFI Southbank with preview of From Up on Poppy Hill From June 8 – 10 BFI Southbank will once again hold its biennial weekend showcasing the best in recent anime. Anime is comparatively new to Western audiences – although Japanese animation has existed since the turn of the 20th Century. It was only when films such as Akira (Katsuhiro Otomo, 1988) were released in the late 1980s that the western world sat up and took notice. The Anime weekend at BFI Southbank will be packed with hotly anticipated previews, high-profile Q&As and an eclectic mix of different genres and styles. The weekend will open with a preview of the much anticipated From Up on Poppy Hill (2011), the latest offering from Studio Ghibli. Directed by Goro Miyazaki (son of studio founder and preeminent director Hayao), From Up on Poppy Hill is a timely tale set in rural Yokohama just before the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. A frequent misconception of anime is that it is invariably violent, or only for adults, but titles such as A Letter to Momo (2011) and Oblivion Island (2009) will appeal to audiences of all ages. Also screening will be UK premieres of Full Metal Alchemist 2 (2011) (featuring a Q&A with special guests director Kazuya Murata and producer Masahiko Minami) and The Princess and the Pilot (2011). Also screening will be Gintama: the Movie (2010) and Makoto Shinkai’s (The Place Promised in Our Early Days, 2004) latest film Children Who Chase Lost Voices from Deep Below (2011), which firmly moves him from ranking as an up and coming animator to an established director.

Animation Studies – Animated Dialogues, 2007 Michael Broderick Superflat Eschatology Renewal and Religion in anime “For at least some of the Superflat people [...] there is a kind of traumatic solipsism, even an apocalyptic one, that underlies the contemporary art world as they see it.” THOMAS LOOSER, 2006 “Perhaps one of the most striking features of anime is its fascination with the theme of apocalypse.” SUSAN NAPIER, 2005 “For Murakami, images of nuclear destruction that abound in anime (or in a lineage of anime), together with the monsters born of atomic radiation (Godzilla), express the experience of a generation of Japanese men of being little boys in relation to American power.” THOMAS LAMARRE, 2006 As anime scholar Susan Napier and critics Looser and Lamarre suggest, apocalypse is a major thematic predisposition of this genre, both as a mode of national cinema and as contemporary art practice. Many commentators (e.g. Helen McCarthy, Antonia Levi) on anime have foregrounded the ‘apocalyptic’ nature of Japanese animation, often uncritically, deploying the term to connote annihilation, chaos and mass destruction, or a nihilistic aesthetic expression. But which apocalypse is being invoked here? The linear, monotheistic apocalypse of Islam, Judaism, Zoroastra or Christianity (with it’s premillennial and postmillennial schools)? Do they encompass the cyclical eschatologies of Buddhism or Shinto or Confucianism? Or are they cultural hybrids combining multiple narratives of finitude? To date, Susan Napier’s work (2005, 2007) is the most sophisticated examination of the trans- cultural manifestation of the Judeo-Christian theological and narrative tradition in anime, yet even her framing remains limited by discounting a number of trajectories apocalypse dictates.1 However, there are other possibilities.
