Snyder and Schauer in Statistical Tie Snyder 48% - Schauer 47%

EAST LANSING, Mich. — Governor and Democratic challenger Mark Schauer continue to be in a statistical tie in the last pre-election Fox 2 Detroit/Mitchell Poll of conducted last night.

In the poll, Snyder has 48.1%, Schauer 47.4%, Libertarian Mary Buzuma 1%, U.S. Tax Payers Mark McFarlin 1%, and Green Party Paul Homeniuk 1%. Only two percent are undecided. At the end of the survey, voters were asked to name which candidate they would vote for if they had to make a choice without the option of being undecided. In that question, Snyder led by 2 percent (49%-47%). The automated survey of 1,310 likely voters in November’s General Election was conducted on Monday November 3, 2014 by Mitchell Research & Communications, Inc. for Fox 2 News (WJBK-TV) in Detroit and has a Margin of Error + or – 2.7% at the 95% level of confidence.

“Governor Snyder and former Congressman Mark Schauer continue to be in a close battle with the governor having a razor thin lead of just seven tenths of one percent. That is a half percent better than Sunday night, but still well within the margin of error. The good news for the governor is that when asked to decide without the option of saying they are not sure yet, Snyder leads by two percent, 49%-47%. Sunday polling has differed with Monday polling throughout this election season. That is the case here where some crosstabs differ from last night’s polling. However, the key with polling is to look at the overall results and they show a very close race on both Sunday and Monday night,” Steve Mitchell CEO of Mitchell Research & Communications said.

In a poll conducted Sunday night, Democrat led Republican Terri Lynn Land by 12%, GOP Attorney General led Democrat Mark Totten by 8%, and Republican Secretary of State Ruth Johnson led Democrat Godfrey Dillard by 7%, which is why the focus in Monday night’s polling was on the governor’s race. www.MitchellResearch.net 314 Evergreen Suite B, East Lansing, MI 42823 517-351-4111 Fax: 517-351-1265 5034 Champlain Circle, West Bloomfield, MI 48323 248-626-1716 Fax: 248-855-1054

“As we said in our release yesterday, we have adjusted (weighted) this sample to be more Democratic than four years ago. In this poll, 44% of the voters are Democrats and 39% Republicans. We also have 12% of the voters being African-American. These are high percentages for an off-presidential race. If we see a more traditional off-year turnout, then that would mean Governor Snyder will do better. We also saw in polling last week that one-third of the voters who voted by absentee ballot this year voted on Election Day four years ago and two years ago,” Mitchell said. “That means we may see a higher GOP turnout at the polls on Election Day.”

The chart above shows the race for Governor in the five most recent Mitchell Research/Fox 2 (WJBK-TV) Detroit Polls leading up to Monday night’s polling.

“Governor Snyder’s favorability (48% favorable- 46% unfavorable) is very close to the support he has in the trial ballot question. His final job approval is 54 percent. Schauer’s favorable/unfavororable (43%-40%) is very similar to Sunday night (42%- 38%),” Mitchell said.
