Enter a feeding station assisted by a Zoo Keeper where you can touch and feed these giant creatures – one of the only places in North America where visitors can come this close to a rhinoceros.

Tampa’s Lowry Park Zoo has welcomed two endangered Grevy’s zebra foals — a female born March 17 (St. Patrick's Day) and male born April 11 — in the Zoo’s African “Rhino Reserve” exhibit, shared with southern white rhinos.

Bearing soft brown and white stripes at birth, newborn foals stand on their long, wobbly legs within one hour of birth. The new mothers, “Pixie” and “Zippo” have responded extremely well to the foals, who often blend in to their mother’s striping patterns when they stand side by side. Mothers and foals live together for several years, sharing a habitat with the stallion (male), “Marty.”

Grevy’s zebra, sometimes known as the imperial zebra, is the largest species of wild equine in the world. The black stripes are narrow and close-set, being broader on the neck, and they extend to the hooves. According to wildlife experts, each zebra has its own unique set of stripes, which are as distinctive as fingerprints!

Family Health: Clostridium Difficile Family Health: Clostridium Difficile

Clostridium difficile or commonly known as C. diff is a bacterial infection in your intestines. C. diff infection occurs when the C. diff micro-organism begins to grow out of control resulting in severe infectious diarrhea and inflammation of the large intes- tine. According to the Mayo Clinic, each year tens of thousands of people in the United States get sick from C. diff, including healthy people who are not hospitalized or taking antibiotics. The presence of C. diff in hospitalized adults is ten times higher (up to 30%) then in healthy adults. This infection is by far the most common cause of diarrhea found in hospital patients. C. diff can cause symptoms ranging from diarrhea to life threatening inflammation of the colon if gone untreated. C. diff is commonly found in older adults in hospitals or in a long-term care facility. This bacterial infection is becoming more com- mon, more severe and much harder to treat. Basically, a C. diff infection occurs when a person’s preventative bacteria is not strong enough to stop the C. diff from outgrowing the GI tract. This happens for nu- merous reasons: - A long stay in the hospital or a long-term care facility - Age - Illness - Antibiotics The unfortunate truth about a C. diff infection is that it is very hard to treat and treatment can last for several months. Apart from the current antibiotics used to help treat C. diff, pharmaceutical companies are currently developing a vaccine against the Clostridium difficile infection that is indi- cated for first occurrence in at-risk individuals. Due to the fact of the increasing cases of infection, failure of treatment, and increased recurrence rate it is a target for prevention too through vaccination. The current studies for the C. diff vaccine are looking for individuals to meet the following criteria in order for eligibility for trial enrollment: - Aged ≥40 to < 76 years on the day of inclusion - At risk for developing C. difficile infection during the trial because of impending elective surgery or hospitalization, or current or impending residence in a long-term care facility or rehabilitation facility Some exclusions do apply.
