MEDIA RELEASE IT&CM China 2017 / 04 MEDIA RELEASE IT&CM China 2017 / 04 Macao Is IT&CM China 2017’s Largest Exhibition Destination; Exclusive Dinner Host Shanghai, 5 April 2017 – Destination Macao, fronted by Macao Trade and Investment Promotion Institute (IPIM), returned to IT&CM China 2017 as the largest exhibiting destination on the show floor. They were also the only destination to host a dinner exclusively for invited buyers on the 22nd of March, taking advantage of one of the show’s many captive networking sessions. Acknowledging IT&CM China’s value proposition as an effective platform in promoting China to the World and the World to China, Mainland China and in particular Shanghai, has been a primary market for MICE and corporate business opportunities for IPIM. This propelled IPIM’s decision to leverage on IT&CM China 2017 which shared an expanded hall space with Corporate Travel conference CTW China for the very first time, to target these segments. Elaborated Irene Va Kuan Lau, Executive Director, IPIM, “As we have already started to tap into the market with great success, we aim to generate new business leads and further strengthen our knowledge and network through IT&CM China. Macao’s recent infrastructure development and growth can now accommodate the largest MICE groups out of Mainland China, creating even grander possibilities with Macao’s selection of facilities.” Macao’s government recently launched two subvention programmes to accommodate the booming MICE industry and to better serve the needs of event owners and organisers. Both support programmes cover a range of eligible subsidies for event expenses, such as accommodation, food & beverage, speaker hosting, marketing promotion, and official event ceremonies. What makes Macao unique as a tourism hotspot are the flashy hotel and casino strips that are popular places of interest. New integrated hotels are in the pipeline starting with the redevelopment of Wynn Palace and The Parisian Macao. Still to come in 2018, the MGM COTAI (offering 1,400 rooms and suites, meeting space, boutique spas, retail and food & beverage outlets as well as the first International Mansion at MGM for the ultimate luxury experience); Morpheus, a new flagship hotel for the City of Dreams complex (780 hotel rooms, entertainment, international dining options, designer brands); and Grand Lisboa Palace consisting of two hotel wings – Grand Lisboa Palace Hotel and Palazzo Versace Macau (a collective 521,435 square metres with 77,158 square metres of parking, and a multi-purpose theatre). Through their hosted dinner, IPIM promoted themselves as a one-stop service provider for MICE while introducing the available support programmes and services that can be customised towards each event. Said Irene, “Macao’s promotional dinner was the perfect targeted platform to get our destination message across to key Chinese buyers. We are looking forward to getting to know corporate and incentive buyers and their needs so that we can better fulfil them.” At IT&CM China 2017, Macao displayed 31 co-exhibitors under their pavilion encompassing venues, hotels, PCOs and DMCs, showcasing the destination’s capabilities in hosting events of any scale. Interested buyers had the chance to learn about the many facilities and attractions that may be suitable for their upcoming events. IT&CM China 2017 was held from 21 – 23 March in Shanghai and is co-located with CTW China, the leading Corporate Travel Management conference for China. • Casino Boss Francis Lui Won Big in Macau, but His Next
IT DIDN’T QUITE WORK OUT THAT WAY. A partnership with an American casino operator fi zzled, so after running a couple of card clubs in other peo- ple’s hotels, his family’s irm, Galaxy Entertainment Group, built one of Macau’s new glittering casinos BY RUSSELL PEARLMAN in 2006. That and building two other incredibly successful casinos in Macau transformed Lui, 62, from the ambitious son of a wealthy Hong Kong con- struction magnate into one of the world’s richest men. In turn, Lui helped transform Macau—which over the past several hundred years has been, in turn, a waystation for refugees fl eeing the Mongols, a bustling Portuguese-run trading colony, a haven for CASINO BOSS early-20th-century gangsters and a neutral port in the storm of World War II—into its latest incarnation: the world’s biggest betting parlor. Gamblers drop more than FRANCIS LUI WON BIG $28 billion a year betting at Macau’s casinos. Las Vegas doesn’t even get one-quarter of that. But instead of sitting back and enjoying Macau’s current form, he’s at the forefront of trying to reinvent the area yet IN MACAU, BUT HIS again. He’s making a multibillion-dollar bet that Macau’s next reinvention won’t involve much gambling at all. Over the next few years, Galaxy wants to add NEXT BET BARELY 10.7 million square feet of space to its existing Galaxy Macau resort, nearly doubling its size. It potentially will include a convention center, a concert venue with INVOLVES GAMBLING.
