First edition July 2020 Catalog no. 125-432 Introduction

Welcome to this gathering and sampling of my work. Here are new hymn texts with new music, previously published texts with new music, and a selection of previously published texts with their original music, giving them a new chance to be seen and sung. Many of the texts are based on . There are close paraphrases and more distant paraphrases. There are popular psalms such as 8 and 23, and the “difficult” . Psalm 120, not in the Revised Common Lectionary, becomes a strong song against war. Besides the psalm-based hymns, there are hymns for the Christian year and hymns on the ministry, death, and resurrection of Jesus. The title of the collection comes from “As Her Soul Becomes a Song,” a new hymn on the Magnificat which is here in two settings. Two of those reap- pearing with their original settings are “Rise, My Song, and Stretch Your Wings” and “Over the Waves of Words,” two of my personal favorites from my first words and music collection, Over the Waves of Words.

My thanks to all the composers, and especially to those who wrote specifically for this project. David Ashley White’s request for words for a new tune—the reverse of our usual collaboration process—led to the text, “Our Every Breath Is Heaven’s Gift.” Amanda Husberg is always willing and able to create strong, singable tunes and I called upon her as I have many times before. Maggi Tucker and I both attended the Hymn Society conference in Dallas in 2019 and re- newed our collaboration. Pat Michaels has written many tunes for my texts, and we led a successful festival of them together in Cambridge, Massachusetts, in 2019. Some from that festival, and others com- posed since, are included here. Andrew Donaldson is a close friend with whom I have done varied and interesting projects but not many published hymn settings. His settings included here are especially welcome.

He uses traditional forms to create striking new texts with biblical and theological integ- rity. His work is included in hymnals and hymnal sup- plements from a wide spectrum of denominations, and in many independent hymnals and hymnal supple- ments. He is a frequent presenter at conferences of The Hymn Society in the United States and Canada, and has been called a master of his craft in the review pages of The Hymn Society journal. Dozens of anthem set- tings of his words have been composed and published. Selah Publishing Co. has been publishing collections of his work since 1995. Besides hymn and anthem texts, Leach has written words for cantatas and art song. With David Schaap, he edited The Selah , Hear the Angels Sing, and And Jesus Said: Hymns on the Parables. Born in Bangor, Maine in 1953, Leach received a B.A. in religion from Bowdoin College and an M.Div. from Princeton Theological Seminary. He was a United Church of Christ pastor in Connecticut from 1978 to 1999. Since then he has been a member of the Evan- gelical Lutheran Church in America. He writes secular as well as sacred poetry and is a visual artist working chiefly in collage. Leach lives in Stamford, Connecticut with his wife, Beverly, and is a member of St. John’s Lu- theran Church in Stamford. Richard and Beverly have two sons and three grandchildren.
