Young People’s views on their communities in Aberdeenshire 2019 | 3

1 Introduction This report shares the findings of a survey completed by 2401 young people, 16% of all Aberdeenshire Academy pupils. Designed by Aberdeenshire Youth Forum (AYF) members at their first meeting of 2019. Aberdeenshire Youth Forum is a group of approximately 30 young people aged 12-21 years who represent communities, schools, equality and specific interest groups in Aberdeenshire.

A survey was suggested as a means of finding out what young people in Aberdeenshire think about their communities: what they like; what they are concerned about; and their interest in working with others to improve their communities.

The survey consisted of 5 questions and took about 2 minutes to complete. Microsoft office 365 forms was used as the online tool to enable the survey to be completed online and via a QR code. Paper copies were also used.

The findings will inform and influence the work of all 17 community youth platforms by locality findings. The overall findings will provide the Aberdeenshire Youth Forum of the Aberdeenshire wide picture.

The CLD Work With Young People Team recognised the value of the survey for AYF and the community youth platforms, but also recognised the value of the findings for the service and the team offered full support throughout the consultation period in February and March.

In March, AYF came together for its second meeting of the year and agreed to create 3 working committees to progress work on the top 4 issues identified by young people.  Drugs and Alcohol  Bullying  Transport

AYF would like the report shared widely so that Aberdeenshire’s adult elected members (councillors, MPs, MSPs, MEPs) and other services and agencies, both statutory and voluntary, are aware of young people’s views in Aberdeenshire of their communities.

The young people of Aberdeenshire Youth Forum and the CLD workers with the Work With Young People Team would like to thank Aberdeenshire schools for supporting the survey and all the young people who shared their views on their community.
