    THE SCHOLES: A SIXTEENTH-CENTURY LANCASHIRE HOUSE'11 BY T. C. BARKER, M.A., Ph.D., AND S. A. HARRIS, A.C.I.S. '"THE Scholes stands in about three and a half acres of grounds A near the southern fringe of St. Helens in the district of Thatto Heath. A road and housing estate are barely a hundred yards from the north section, but when the many tall trees are in leaf the house is almost completely hidden. To the south-west, from a height of some 260 feet, it commands a fine view over a wide expanse of surprisingly unspoilt countryside. A multi- gabled, rambling building, mostly of massive blocks of red sandstone, it probably incorporates fifteenth-century work but dates for the most part from the later sixteenth. It is now the property of Pilkington Brothers, Limited, and the residence of Mr. J. B. Watt, one of the directors, on whose initiative this study was undertaken.(2) In former times it was necessary to build with materials near at hand and it is not surprising that The Scholes, situated in a district where a fine freestone has been quarried for centuries, is almost entirely stone-built.
