He was ready since 1892 when Rizal was deported in Dapitan but was held back only on the advice of Rizal not to proceed with the uprising. Nonethe- less, upon the discovery of the Katipunan, he, without reluc- tance, called for the armed revolution. Being a worker who only had an education equivalent to grade 4, Bonifacio had no acumens like the ilustrados. He only had his body and strength to offer employers for his subsistence. Compared to peasants also who could still own a piece of land, a nipa hut, or a carabao, Boni- facio would lose nothing if he became a revolutionary which he did. The peasants could still be reluctant in joining the struggle for their possessing a meager wealth, but they were subjected to the abuses of the friars and hacienderos. They also found themselves, over a period of time, dispossessed of their meager properties. The promise of kicking out the hacienderos and colonial- ists was their motivation to raise their arms in revolt. Thus, the revolutionary forces were largely composed of exploited workers and peasants. It was their stamp to be the leaders and backbones of the revolution. Bonifacio, however, was not aware of his class as be- ing the most progressive. He still thought that the ilustra- dos were above him. Feeling beneath them, he even upheld two ilustrados to become pres- ident of the Katipunan before he asserted himself due to the inaction of his predecessors. He also believed in Jose Rizal who said that the revolution could not start, among other reasons, until the revolution- aries were armed as the colo- nialists. Bonifacio, who read on the French Revolution, ap- parently forgot that the French royalty were toppled by those armed with mere pitchforks and clubs. Nonetheless, when the colonialists discovered the Katipunan, Bonifacio started the revolution even with just bolos and bamboo spears.
