EDITORIAL NOTE An interminable, though not positively lethal, winter; an un-genial apring; a dry and warm summer; an autumn that prolonged summer; -and' a cold and hard ending. That was 1970. It was also Buropoatl Conservation Year, and, though only a beginning, has achieved some thing towards general consciousness of the threats to our environment and an app~ation of aB that giV~8 interest, variety, <:Xhilaration and joy-which includes our bird$. They h~ve a hard struggle. "Probablypois6Iis, though still a men ace, are no longer the biggest drain on the bird population. Economic fa.t'ining, invol\ting destruction of cover, is the biggest; and for many common species the everlasting toU 'tiiken by man's speed on the road may perhaps be next. Nevertheless the record and the outlook alike are not so bad. These counties have suffered less than some from loss of hedge, timber and vegetation, and the evidence is that the breeding seasoh was a good one. On the debit side the birds which depend on old tim~r are dwindl ing-Nuthatch, Treecreeper, Woodpeckers and possibly Tawny Owll. On the credit side Redstarts and Whitethroats, casualties in 1969, have shown a come-back; the Sparrow Hawk, in extremis a few years ago, has recovered markedly; Heronries have swelled a little; Quail have almost 'exploded', and game-birds have done weU, even Black-game possibly showing an increase; the Kingfisher has flourished; more Bewick's swans accept Wye Winter hospitality; and more Gretn Sand piperssQjoum with us. As to rarities. if a First or Second Record be a "scalp" we have notched several-Pectoral Sandpiper and Bar-headed Goose are First for both Counties, Sanderling a First for . and Ruff a First for Radnor; and Spotted Redshank a Third for Radnorshire. Of other scarcer or more interesting birds there are records of Bittem, Comcrake, Com Bunting, Black Grouse, GadwaB, Hobby, Kite, Great Grey Shrike, White Wagtail, Nightjar. Hawfinch. and possibly Wood lark (an almost lost species). Interest lies as much in the personality and behaviour of the commoner as in acquaintance with the aristocrat, and all Members are invited to send in any observations of unusual incident, even among our common species, for such adds alike to the knowledge and the enjoyment of fellow Members.

FIELD MEETINGS were held at Ludlow; Bredwardine Wye; Talybont Reservoir. Brecon; Haugh Wood (four times); Whitney-on Wye; Penybont; HoUyhush, ; Shobdon; Waun Marteg; Hind well Pool (twice); Abbeycwmhir; Rode Tropical Bird Garden, Bath; Belvide Reservoir, Staffs.; Cherry Hill Nature Reserve; and Letton. 454 HEREFORDSHIRE ORNITHOLOGICAL REPORT, 1970

INDOOR MEETINGS, at the Percival Hall, included The Nest box and Atlas schemes; G. N. Smith's colour films; J. L. Fox on Bird Migration and Conservation; G. A. Walton on Bird Watching in Southern Ireland; Dr. J. M. Flegg on Rings for Research; F. G. Holland's fine film "Storks over Stavno"; and at the Town Hall the R.S.P.B's colour films "Winged Aristocrats" and "Birds of the Grey Wind." MEMBERSHIP. New members totalled 53 during the year, bringing the Club up to 418 on December 31st. PUBLICATIONS. Copies of "Herefordshire Birds" (1954) by Captain H. A. Gilbert and Dr. C. W. Walker, "Birds of Radnorshire" (1955) by G. C. S. Ingram and Colonel H. Morrey Salmon, and most of the Club's previous Reports may be obtained from the Secretary at 22!- Pence a copy, which includes postage. The Club's FINANCIAL POSITION is again satisfactory, and can be found summarised near the end of this Report. (, THANKS are due again to Dr. C. W. Walker, of the Editorial Sub Committee and to all Members who have assisted with the Nest-box and Atlas schemes, or who have sent in the notes without which this Report could not be compiled. T.R.H.O.

THE NEST·BOX SCHEME In 1970 our Nest-Box scheme comprised 1,076 boxes, divided into 42 groups of varying size scattered among our woodlands. Between 40 and 50 ornithologists were needed to service these groups of boxes and to keep a check on their occupants. We are very grateful to all these ladies and gentlemen for their generous expenditure of time and trouble in this most worth-while activity. 550 boxes were occupied, and just over 4,000 eggs were laid, of which 3,175 reached maturity and fledged successfully, a ratio of almost 80%. The Pied Flycatcher had a disappointing year, nests numbering only 104 (145 last year). Something seemed to have gone amiss with its spring migration. At L1ancillo, for example, three cocks anived and adopted boxes, but no hen-birds came to join them. The eastern sites, Ledbury and Brockhampton, failed to repeat last year's success, but a nest at Mathon was a most gratifying first record. The various Tit species nested in normal numbers, and Redstarts, with treble the 1969 number of nests, almost regained normal numbers after their last year's catastrophe. Eight boxes were occupied by Dormice and one by bumble-bees! Ringing of fledgelings and some adults was again carried out by Mr. Baillie, Dr. Boddington and Mr. Chris Mead of the British Trust for Ornithology. C. W. WALICER, (Chairman, Herefordshire Nature Trust). HEREFORDSHIRE ORNITIIOLOOICAL REPORT, 1970 455 B.T.O; ATLAS SCHEME-lbird Season With three sea~Qn's work on the B.T.O. Atlas completed, it is evident that in obta.Uiing ,positive coDfi.rmation of breeding certain species are proving rather elusive-;-Spa~row Hawk, Water Rail, Wood cock and Grasshopper Warbler are good examples. There is also the problem of the bird Which, although present at the right season, never Dlay have attempted to' b~ed, yet the possibility cannot be fully dis counted. The CrossbiU recorded in 5036 typifies the latter question; shoulc:bthe species 'turn up again during the next two years can some one produce' good evidence of breeding? The following !\ummary shows the approximate position at the end of .the 1970 seasOn. A few records have still to be added. Birds in the selected list have all been noted in the squares indicated at the right se;lSOn, and it is requested that special attention be given to those species by in~restea Club Members during the final two years of the Survey. My grateful thanks a~ due to all those who have helped to bring the third year of thjs exercise to a satisfactory conclusion. AJ.S.

Shobdon , ; Was it coincidental that Buropean Conservation Year should fit in with an inftux of Quail to the County? Were the populace,on the northem .shores'of the Mediterranean" conscience-stricken, anq birds allowed free paS$age?; It was certainly a Quail Year, and prompts one to delve into past history'. " 'i· "Ithu IObg been thought that the 'area Of laM between the rivers Lugg and Arrow, to the' south Mwhich the Pibsley brook flows, and which includes a war-time airfield and covers some third of the parish of Shobdon, bas a speCial attraction to the species. It is a mini-plain and' was in pie-historic' times a large lake. Could the soil, the Pres ance of some minerals, plants or insects cause Quail to soujoum, or the fact that to the north and west the hills serve as a barrier? One can ohlyguess.

This land was, until the el.ulf 1920's, owned by,the Bateman family of Shobdon Court, who were great preservers of aame. They bred Mallard commerCially, hen~ the Decoy Pool, and Old', Decoy ;JoS we ~ew' it., ne eH8s were collected, incubated by bl'pody, hel\S, and the duc~s retUrned. to the pools. They annually ~changed 'game-bird eggs with other of their esta~es in differet)t partspf the (:oW)try, t,llereby ensudng introduction of fresh blood. In the Bateman papers a note of 172~ ll)Cords the purchase oia draught-net forQuai]s, Partridges etc. So one must conclude they were present in some nUmbers in those days.

The late Mr. Bolt had a clutch of 10 Quail's eggs in his collection labelled "Taken at Shobdon by T. Norris 1912".

A Member of this Club was present as a lad when a shooting party shot one at the R~d, nearrr~tei~e,;in 19iO. In the .l~te summer of 1939 I saw my tirst Quail on barley stubble in th~ pari~h., I was not then farililiar with the ~II. 1949 saw Italian P.O.W.'s \forking on farms adjoining the airfield, and they were quick to recognise the call. It reminded them of home and caijsed much heart-burning.

During these years the airfield was constantly active day and night, and quail were heard calling from the adjacent fields; they did not seem UQduly distur\led by thf> noise., During 1950 this CluQ was foun ded, and an annual report ,for 1951 was published, which contains subsequent notes on Quail. In 1952 I heard my first Quail calling, and the following year a bird returned to the same field. Breeding Was also proved at Staunton-on-Arrow, just west of Shobdon. 458 HEREFORDSffiRJ:, ORNITHOLOGICAL REPORT,l-970

The following years saw the llumbers increasing annually, till a peak was reached in 1961, when on a calm summer evening, on a walk round tqe airfield (now nearly all

1962 was a cold summer, and numbers were considerably down, 1?ut built up again by 1964. Then in 1965 the Air Ministry sold the land on the airfield, which resulted in a new occupier witba different farming policy, and in the following years it .was difficulLto find any birds. The decline was on a national scale, so that one cannot wholly blame the farmer concerned. Lamenting over the probability of the species being excluded from the Atlas survey list, at least inFJ;erefordslJ.ire, it ~ave me much pleas ure, when I investigated a reported Corncra'Ke, to find it turned out to be. fl Quail. The following evening I heard. two calIihg on the airfield. They were back,. anti later bred. Theitpresence enabled many Club members to hear the call, which was a new experience for them. They now appear wide-spread over the County, and I have a feel" ing that their presence coincides with a good· Partridge year. Let us hope that both species remain with us for generations to come. T.R.A.

ANECDOTE AND ODDITY 1. Hovering. Can only the Kestrel really hover? The Buzzard does so clumsily. On Nov. 10th, near Bridge Sollars, TRHO watched a Barn Owl, in the car lights, hovering exactly like a Kestrel for half a minute over the edge of a field. On Sept. 10th at LlancilIo TRHO also watched a Heron virtually motionless in the air; there was a brisk south wind; the bird faced it, gave one flap per six seconds over about half a minute, and remained stationary making a rather uncanny sight. On Oct. 18th, in viewing their Kite, up the Elan Valley, the FSB's watched him bearing up into a heavy head-wind without ever a wing-beat. 2. MALLARD. At Nantmel two albino ducklings were seen on the Dulas, on and after June 15th (DJLS). HEREFORDSHIRE. ORNITHPLOOICAL,~RT, 1970 459

3. Buzzard and Sparrqw llawk. -'{hat ,the Bqzzard (and lOOSt preda tors) pays his way is borne out by observation. On April 11th, on Radnor F.oTeSt, ROBGwatched two Buzr.ards actually on a CarrionCrow'snest and being dive-bombed by the parents. TRHO records a neighbour seeing a Buzzard twice visit a Crow's nest and remove young, and at Lulham, in March, ",atched a JJuzzard stoop ott a group of Jackdaws-~esult uncertain. At Llandrindod Mr. T. E. Tylh observed a Buzzard. carrying off what was almost certainly araf: 'Preying upon pigeon and rabbit is l:\coml11onplace, and on Nov. UltJt, at ShobdQIl,TRJ\watched a Sp;urow Hlj.wk chase and catch a Woodpigeon. 4. Grouse.' June 25th: at Nantrriel, blLS came on two families of 5 a,nd 7 young; jUldin I?oth caSl;s the;mother flew off while the cock performed ~ broken~wing tri;ck. 5. Moorhen. On June 13th at Penybont CW, when walking to- '. wards the backwater behind the.weir, heard distress calls; and on arrival found that they were caused by two M~rhens which were being chased by a stoat. The stoat waS sWimming -after b'ne of the pair. When it came close to them the birds made a tremen dous noise, and eventually one disappeared and the other climbed a tree overhanging the water. The stoat then crept about in the long grass and swam in the water near the treed Moorhen. Then a small chick swam oat oldie reeds towal'ds the parent. After a few more skirmishes between parent and stoat, all went q~iet.

6. Rook. The one local rookery near Bridge Soll~rswas felled in " ~utumn 1969., In the absence of big timber, the birds crpssed the river to a" small hanging wood of young ash arid esu\bli~d 40 nests, the lowest among which was no more than 17 feet above ground (TIUiO).

7. Lapwing. In May, at Brilley, WLS reeqrds three. nests being carefully ploughed round and left safe by 'the local owner. Agri· culturists ple4SC cc;>py.

8. Wren. At Brilley again" WLS reports a pair talQag over an old Swallow's nest, on barn rafters, and covering it with a moss top.

9. Black~ircL Any ,time is cOllrting time. In:, nyd-Sep~ember, at lIow,C'Wle, BS watched a.,cock jlOd hep, B}.ackbirp in her orchard. . He bowep ~ bobbed over a fallen apple1lDd pec~ed bits to giv~ to his ,lovC;7SPmetil11es -acct;l)ted and sometimes rejected. She then ~opped off. temptingly t9 a diff~rent apple, where the process was repeated Adam and"Eve in the bird world? 10. BJaMird. KAM,tepbrtS that in 'triitl-Janulltyatock Blackbird Iltarted ,fighting bis reflection' in the wheel disc of a caravan. He , often kept it UP' fot half an hour or more;' This occurred on and ; oil for two weets; often beklre. it was fully light he'could be beard tinkling away at it, 11. Robin. At .K~ton on April 8th an observer wa.tched a Robin being attacked by two others. On, her gQing to its aid it fel' dead -without visibre wound or dariia~ (per.CIP). 12. YellOw Wagla". On Aprll28th at Titley Pool JLF watched nine Yellow Wagtails on obe sman hawthorn, delitly migrating. This i~~icates that the species I11igrates in parties, not individua1)y. 13. Sporietl Flfes'.r. AtI\'itlgtOb, 'on August9th, MLB-T watched a bird consuming a Peacotkbutterfly. It had greaVdifticulty, but finally achieved its meal. 'i, ;, -i:~U~ 14. -TailPiece. A coCk GUineafowJ, near Madley, haR now lived wild. with'a cock Pheasant, for three seasons; surviving the winters and ein:umYenting the guns. ,
