Memorial Hall On Saturday, February 6, 1954, the dream of each Muhlenberg alumnus was realized when Memo- rial Hall, the new physical educa- tion building, was dedicated in a brief program. In the 58 years since, Memorial Hall has been the site of numerous basketball games, wrestling meets, concerts, speakers and, of course, volleyball matches. In 2008, Demo- cratic campaigners Bill Clinton and Barack Obama paid Memorial Hall a visit. Although it is 58 years old, Memorial Hall remains a thoroughly modern facility. Recent im- provements have included the addition of an overhead scoreboard, repainting of the fl oor, a new lighting system installed in 2010 and a repainting of the walls and bleachers in 2011. Since 1998, Memorial Hall has been home to the Buttermaker Tournament. Th e Mule volleyball team has enjoyed playing at home, compiling a 133-84 (.613) record in Memorial Hall since 1991.

Comprised mostly of freshmen, the team worked extremely hard but met with lots of frustration and disappointment during the early part of the season. In an eff ort to keep their morale up, and to point out the necessity of continuing to work hard and thus ultimately achieve success, Coach Frank Marino told them the following story: Th ere was once a group of frogs who happened upon a large vat of milk. Seeing an opportunity for fun, they jumped into the vat and began to frolic. Unfortunately, the edge of the vat was shaped in a curved way that allowed for easy entry but impossible exit. Th e frogs swam frantically about and tried hard to escape from the vat. Eventually all but one frog grew exhausted, sank to the bottom and perished. Th e remaining frog continued to kick and kick until the milk solidifi ed and was turned to butter. Th e frog was therefore able to climb out of the vat and survive. Th e obvious moral of the story is if you keep kicking and trying, you will eventu- ally succeed. Th at group of freshmen went on to set the College record for wins, and their record still stands. Further, of the seven who were freshmen at that time, fi ve made Deans’ List every semester and three were Phi Beta Kappa. Th e group came to be known as the “Buttermakers” and established tradi- tions of excellence and pride which succeeding teams strive to maintain. Th e program holds a tournament every year named in their honor. 14 • Muhlenberg College Volleyball 2012 NNewcomersewcomers 7 2222 KATHERINE TAYLOR BOLL GRBELJA Freshman • M • 6-0 Freshman • OH/DS • 5-9 Naples, Fla./ Franklin Lakes, N.J./ Seacrest Country Day School Indian Hills

GGOODOOD STUDENTSSTUDENTS

Th e Mules had an impressive team GPA of 3.344 for the 2011-12 academic year, earning the Team Academic Award from the American Volleyball Coaches Association for the fi ft h year in a row. Th e award recognizes collegiate and high school volleyball teams that have maintained at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade-point average (out of 4.0) during the school year. Muhlenberg is one of only 17 schools in Division III – the only one in the Centennial Conference – to receive the award each of the last fi ve seasons.

GGOODOOD CITIZENSCITIZENS

Th e members of the Muhlenberg volleyball team are appreciative of their status as collegiate players and make every eff ort to give back to the com- munity that supports them.

• Muhlenberg and the other 10 Centennial Conference teams have combined to raise more than $50,000 in six years of the “Digging for a Cure” campaign. In 2011, the CC schools donated their proceeds to Tanner’s Touch, a Car- roll County, Md., organization developed to raise money for pediatric cancer research and families of children with cancer. In previous years, the money was donated to Liv- ing Beyond Breast Cancer, an organization dedicated to empowering all women aff ected by breast cancer to live as long as possible with the best quality of life.

• In October 2011, the Mules spent the Tuesday of Fall Break reading to a third-grade class at Sacred Heart Re- gional High School. Th e Mules shared with the youngsters their favorite books about Halloween and answered ques- tions about being college athletes.

• Th e team annually participates in Muhlen- berg’s celebration of National Girls and Women in Sport Day. Several dozen elementary- and middle-school girls from Allentown come to cam- pus and are taught the basics in a variety of sports. Afterwards, the Mule athletes talk to their guests about making healthy choices in their daily lives. 20 • Muhlenberg College Volleyball 2012 Proud Sponsors of Muhlenberg College Athletics
