Telephone – Lady (featuring Beyoncé)   – Notes

 Activity Type: gap fill, matching pairs, comprehension.  Vocabulary: Slang words.  Grammar: Present Simple, Past Simple, Modal Verbs.  Time: 30 minutes.  Note: Taken from her second studio album “ Monster”, Lady Gaga originally wrote this song for . When it was rejected she recorded it herself with Beyoncé. The nine-minute video features Beyoncé bailing Gaga out of prison.

1) Write the following verbs on the board:

answer hear live reach break know make say call leave play stop feel like put telephone

2) Play the song. Students tick each verb as they hear it, in any form.

3) Give each student a copy of the worksheet. Ask them to work in pairs to complete the lyrics before listening to the song again, based on context and their answers to the previous activity. Remind them that they may have to change the form of the verb.

4) Play the song again. Students check and complete. Discuss the different verb forms.

5) Explain any necessary vocabulary.

6) Point out the following words in the song, and elicit their meanings:

kinda, gonna, shoulda, wanna, bub

Key: kind of, going to, should have, want to, champagne (bubbly)

7) Sing together.

Watch the video. Students write a news report based on the events portrayed.
