The technique is based on multi-modal mixture mod- els and efficient computation using online EM. Neal, Thesis Advisor Dr. Allen Anderson, Reader Dr. Andrea Bohlman, Reader © 2016 Mason Taylor Allen ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT Mason Taylor Allen: The Musical Features of 2015’s Top-Ranked Country Songs Under the direction of Dr. Jocelyn R. Neal The 2015 top-ten country songs analyzed in this study are characterized by the various formats of their song form, harmonies, and lyrics. This thesis presents a comprehensive study of the structure and narratives in sixty-seven songs that summarizes the distinctive features within those domains of contemporary commercial country music. A detailed description of the norm along with identifiable trends emerges. The song form that features most prominently in this repertory includes a verse-chorus-bridge form with three iterations of the chorus, an intro and outro section, and instrumental sections immediately following each chorus. The top-ten country songs have varying degrees of departure from this typical model. Primary features of the harmonies of these top songs include the frequent use of a double-tonic complex, the absence of a 5-1 authentic cadence, the same chord progression throughout the verse, chorus, and bridge, and the use of only two chords throughout the song. Lyrical analyses show that 2015 songs are continuing the traditional themes about romantic attraction, love, heartache, good times and partying, home, family, nostalgia, religion, and inspiration, within the context of small-town country life that this genre has used for years.

Gender on the Billboard Hot Country Songs Chart, 1996-2016 Jada Watson (University of Ottawa) [email protected] In May 2015 radio consultant Keith Hill revealed that country radio programmers have strict rules on how many female artists can be included in airplay rotation. Referring to females as the “tomatoes” of the country salad, Hill’s remarks have sparked debate about gender-representation in country music. This paper examines gender-related trends on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart between 1996 and 2016, aiming to investigate how female artists have performed on the charts over this two-decade period. Analyzing long-term trends in frequency distribution, this study uses statistical results to unpack assertions made about women’s marginal status in country music. Keywords: country music; gender; Billboard charts; radio Introduction: #TomatoGate In a 26 May 2015 interview with Russ Penuell of Country AirCheck on the subject of country radio scheduling and ratings, consultant Keith Hill spoke candidly about how female artists factor into the format’s airplay rotation: If you want to make ratings in Country radio, take females out. The reason is mainstream Country radio generates more quarter hours from female listeners at a rate of 70 to 75%, and women like male artists. I’m basing that not only on music tests from over the years, but more than 300 client radio stations. The expectation is we’re principally a male format with a smaller female component. I’ve got about 40 music databases in front of me and the percentage of females in the one with the most is 19%.

Por meio de tais aspectos, busco compreender essa embalagem, cuja função básica é a mediação entre artista, sua música, a gravadora e o ouvinte, sempre atravessado pelas marcas do consumo. Abstract There is a dark mythology surrounding the post-punk band Joy Division that tends to foreground the personal history of lead singer Ian Curtis. However, when evaluating the construction of Joy Division’s public image, the contributions of several other important figures must be addressed. This thesis shifts focus onto the peripheral figures who played key roles in the construction and perpetuation of Joy Division’s image. The roles of graphic designer Peter Saville, of television presenter and Factory Records founder Tony Wilson, and of photographers Kevin Cummins and Anton Corbijn will stand as examples in this discussion of cultural intermediaries and collaborators in popular music.

    Revival In The Hebrides by Duncan Campbell Note: This is a transcript of a taped message on the Hebrides Revival which was preached by Duncan Campbell in 1968. The blanked words are those that were difficult to distinguish on the tape. There are two things that I would like to say in speaking about the revival in the Hebrides. First, I would like to make it perfectly clear that I did not bring revival to the Hebrides. It has grieved me beyond words to hear people talk and write about the man who brought revival to the Hebrides. My dear people, I didn't do that. Revival was there before I ever set foot on the island. It began in a gracious awareness of God sweeping through the parish of Barvas. Then I would like to make it perfectly clear what I understand of revival. When I speak of revival, I am not thinking of high-pressure evangelism. I am not thinking of crusades or of special efforts convened and organized by man. That is not in my mind at all. Revival is something altogether different from evangelism on its highest level. Revival is a moving of God in the community and suddenly the community becomes God conscious before a word is said by any man representing any special effort. Now I am sure that you will be interested to know how, in November 1949, this gracious movement began on the island of Lewis. Two old women, one of them 84 years of age and the other 82-one of the stone blind, were greatly burdened because of the appalling state of their own parish.

    Power Gold: Concentration Game CMA Sets Trend for Industry

    February 10, 2020, Issue 691 Power Gold: Concentration Game This edition of Country Aircheck’s Power Gold is led by eight artists who combine for 46 of the Top 100 most-heard Gold hits. Luke Bryan and Florida Georgia Line lead the parade with seven songs apiece, followed by Jason Aldean and Zac Brown Band with six each. Rounding out the top PG hit-makers are Kenny Chesney, Thomas Rhett, Blake Shelton and Carrie Underwood, all with five hits in the Top 100. One artist – Dierks Bentley – places four songs in this elite group, meaning that nine acts are responsible for 50% of the current Power Gold. More thoughts on that later.
