Oh the disappointment!When I heard that synth pop gods Vince Clarke and Martin Gore were uniting, or maybe reuniting, depending on your memory of the original Depeche Mode lineup, I was eager to hear what these two masters would produce. Would Clarke’s talent for catchy hooks and Gore’s talent for dark, yet alluring, melodies bring us the ultimate synth pop album that fans of Depeche Mode and Erasure have long been waiting for? Erm, no.Instead this comes across as the noodling of two guys with synths. Rather than an album of songs, we have here a collection of instrumental noodling that, at worst, sounds like aimless sonic wanderings of interesting synth sounds and, at best, sonic wanderings of interesting synth sounds.Still, when you’re in the mood for something instrumental, that you can play as background music while you’re doing something else, this might fit the bill.Perhaps my hopes were too high?
