DOMINION EFFECT

Located in Moscow’s Sharikopodshipnikovskaya Street, the Dominion Office Building is among the first of the new projects to be built for the growing creative and IT sectors in this primarily industrial and residential district in the southeast of the city. Zaha Hadid conceived and designed the project. Conceived as a series of vertically stacked plates off-set at each level with connecting curved elements, a central atrium rises through all levels to bring natural light into the centre of the building. Balconies at each level project into the atrium and correspond to the displacement of the outer envelope and a series of staircases interconnect through this central space. With the ground floor restaurant linking the atrium to the outdoor terrace and Sharikopodshipnikovskaya Street beyond, and coffee/snack areas and relaxation zones on the balconies, the atrium becomes a shared space over many levels that encourages interaction between the employees of the companies within the building. This integration also encourages collaboration between companies of different services and disciplines. Many IT and creative industry start-up companies regard this collective research culture as vital for progress and development, and the design of the Dominion Office Building reinforces this concept with open connectivity throughout the building. The office spaces are arranged within a system of standard rectilinear bays to offer many different possibilities for small, expanding or large companies. Located on the periphery of the atrium and housing the lifts, fire-escapes, washrooms and service shafts, the service cores provide a degree of privacy to the separate office spaces, with gaps in-between these cores giving some transparency and allowing light to penetrate the into the office areas from the central shared atrium space. This service core ring around the atrium, together with an additional bay of columns close to the outer envelope of the building, provides the structure. The off-set floor-plates are balanced between the opposite sides of the building. In some zones, columns are removed and replaced with transfer beams to increase the uninterrupted floor space for larger tenants or public programmes. www.zaha-hadid.com | Photography by Hufton + Crow

STUDENT-CENTRIC CAMPUS

AHR has completed the redevelopment of Oldham College in Greater Manchester, which includes three new buildings and landscaping. The new buildings lie to the North West of Oldham town centre and were built over three phases creating a student centric campus, which responds to an employment focused education curriculum. The first phase, Building A is a five storey building with teaching spaces and social breakaway spaces for students. The building works as an anchor for the College and celebrates the main approach to the campus from the town centre. The second building, Digital and Creative Centre Oldham, is a four storey building which is a combination of open plan teaching spaces and traditional classrooms. The use of light is a key aspect of the design of this building, and the creation of well-lit and airy spaces for the creative subjects the students study in are a critical outcome from AHR’s design process. Environmental performance is further enhanced by the design of the ventilation system, which exceeds the specifications set by the Department for Education Building Bulletins. Building C delivers new teaching areas over three storeys and defines a valuable green external social space placed centrally in the campus. Internal spaces are specially designed for vocational subjects along with further general teaching accommodation. AHR used graphite coloured concrete and dark brickwork to clad the buildings, complemented by metallic grey window units, chosen for their weather resistance. www.ahr-global.com

OLD GLORY, NEW STORY

Interior architects, Forme UK completed the refurbishment of the ‘New Wing’ of the Somerset House estate this year. The scheme is the fourth phase of the renovation of the iconic Grade 1 listed buildings. When the Inland Revenue vacated the ground floor of the East Wing and the entire West Wing after 150 years of occupation, Forme UK and the design team were briefed to convert the spaces for new use. A cluttered layout was quickly turned into a fluid ensemble of interconnecting galleries and commercial spaces. All the lightweight partitions installed in the 1960s together with other significant structural interventions were removed and the original wall features reinstated, so that the interior could return to its old glory. This restoration unlocked the estate’s potential for a sustainable future, while also restoring its authentic quality. The process required careful and extensive repairs. New timber floors, lighting and traditional materials were used to enhance the original fabric and mirror the aesthetics of the other wings, reflecting the Grade 1 listing of the estate. Forme UK’s contribution has restored Somerset House’s natural ability to delight with exquisite visual experiences. Bespoke chandeliers attract the gaze of visitors, guiding them through the building. The climax is reached in the West Wing, where the last remaining William Chambers cantilevered stone central staircase was restored with the intention to enrich the experience of upward mobility for office users. Bespoke floating light fixtures were hung to the ceiling several floors above and the lightweight stone structure of the staircase was laid bare. The latest phase of the renovation in the ‘New’ Wing on Lancaster Place has included the restoration of two grand cantilever staircases, the creation of three floors of fully serviced office spaces, and a public area in the ground and makers spaces on the basement and mid basement floors. The ground level features a large cafeteria and two fine dining restaurants with views of the Thames. www.forme.uk.com

HILLTOP HARMONY

This private residential commission, a luxury contemporary villa in St. Tropez, South of France, was designed by London architecture practice JaK Studio. The design and build for the property was commissioned by a British couple, both of whom work in the creative industries, looking to create a beautiful and tranquil retreat at this popular holiday destination. Although executed to a clean, linear and minimalist aesthetic, the villa has been constructed to complement the traditional Mediterranean rustic style properties that neighbour it. Ceramic tiles on the east side of the façade are randomly laid to produce a textured, almost handmade finish; steep brick steps that descend into the garden give a nod to the narrow streets of old Mediterranean villages, which is lined by young lemon trees. The vast expanse of deep blue sea fringed by the bay and the undulating picturesque landscape of St Tropez nestled in the distance was, however, the single influential force that shaped the style and composition of the home. The north-facing façade overlooking the sea continues this vintage cruiser theme with a crisp, linear oakwood sunscreen framing the edge of the building and casting dramatic angular shadows on the interior space no matter what time of the day. With this play on light, the villa becomes akin to a habitable sundial, with residents able to ascertain the time of the day simply from the casting of the shadows. Meanwhile, rich wooden cladding on the west side gives a nod to the rambling thick forestry next to it, creating an aesthetic dialogue with nature. The main living room space in particular really celebrates the view. Floor to ceiling double-height windows, extending up into the first storey, creates a concession of ‘frames’, each one producing a real life gallery of art using the sea view ‘canvas’ before it. Upon entering, visitors are instantly greeted by this vista, enabling them to immerse themselves in an interior space flooded by space and light. Clean lines and simple form untainted by the distraction of fussy details give a pure and unadultered view of the landscape in the distance, underscoring the message that this is a property made specially for appreciating the beauty of nature. Outside, a decked sunken kitchen fitted out with a barbeque and Jamie Oliver clay oven completes the alfresco dining offering, while the infinity pool at sunlounger level melds seamlessly into the blue of the Mediterranean Sea. www.jakstudio.co.uk

Weekend residence

HOME FROM HOME Set in Sonoma, the heart of wine country, California, architect Gustave Carlson has designed and built his own weekend residence, a true reflection of his relaxed Californian style with a touch of nordic simplicity, paying homage to his Swedish genes. His wife Caroline is an artist and Gustave’s teenage daughter, now a freshman at U Penn, is a budding photographer. Together with a young son, the architect has created a space of simplicity and serenity, to relax and unwind, whilst still reflecting the creative nature of the sectors they work in and are passionate about. A new structure, the house stands at about 2400 sqft. The house essentially fits a big rectangular floor plan with an open kitchen. Bedrooms lead off a hallway down the house. All rooms open on to the wrap around veranda. The white structure is an adjacent art studio for Caroline, which also connects to the veranda, pool and lawn. The property is surrounded by vineyards and in the spring, wild mustard fields. While the exteriors fit with the vernacular architecture of rural Sonoma County, the interiors are light-filled, and modern. www.gustavecarlsondesign.com Photography by Laure Joliet

It is important to promote not insight into the topical issues of the day only excellence in prestige projects but also to give detailed thought to excellence in ‘every day’ developments. People do slowly realise that the creation of well-designed public spaces, public buildings, workplaces and sustainable neighbourhoods can transform a whole area significantly. The boundaries between art and architecture have always been blurred. The importance of creating a high quality ‘object’ that is functional, based on a concept does not change. Although some architects might have become household names, does it mean that the public care more about the quality of buildings if they like an architect’s designed chair? Designed by Norman Foster and Arup Group architect-centered, self-promotion that is and erected by Skanska implied by the term starchitect. A starchitect evokes the image of a professional whose sole motive appears to the blatant celebration of his (or her) personna — above and beyond that of the work itself. In recent decades, the rise of the starchitect has helped launch a number of prominent careers, bringing about waves of media coverage, while, ironically, contributing to the general deterioration of the profession itself. The media's infatuation and adoration of the omnipotent starchitect — designer, planner, builder, social engineer, master of the universe — has created a widespread obsession with all things new and unusual. This tendency to shock, simply for the sake of being shocking, has permeated both the mass media and the halls of academia, downplaying the contribution and importance of those less visible architects who are working, quietly and seriously, day after day, creating spaces and products that respond responsibly and creatively to the needs of their own place and time. Architecture should never be about the architect. It should only be about the product and the end user. Professionally, we must return to the center of our craft: allowing the search for solutions to become our focus. We must recommit to our greatest skill and access our most important talent: instead of merely designing buildings, we need to design solutions. We must address the real problems besieging the world we live in and focus on those areas of critical necessity such as sustainability, green design, and energy efficiency, that will soon determine how the destiny of our planet enfolds. This is where the very pulse of our profession is beating and it is where our future lies. Our survival as a species depends on how we, as human beings, choose to impact the planet. Addressing these issues is both our duty and our responsibility as architects. PREFERRED BIDDER

Premier Interlink has been appointed as the preferred bidder for the construction of a modular building complex, comprising of offices and site welfare facilities, required for the proposed construction of the new EDF Nuclear power generation plant at Hinkley Point C in Somerset. This vast £40 million, 38,000 sqm, impressive range of buildings will house all the management and technical personnel required during the scheduled 10 year construction stage of this much needed new nuclear power plant. Almost 1000 steel framed modules will be constructed ‘off site’ at Premier’s state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in East Yorkshire, before being transported to the HPC Site for final assembly and fitting out, a process that will take only 16 months from manufacture to hand over. The proposed EDF HPC will provide reliable, low carbon electricity to meet seven per cent of UK demand. During its 60 years of operation, it will avoid around nine million tonnes of CO2 emissions per year. 0800 3160888 | [email protected] | www.waco.co.uk

MIELE PROFESSIONAL CPD

Miele Professional has launched its first CPD seminar for Chartered RIBA Architects. The RIBA approved CPD material tackles the topic of how to design an efficient laundry in a care home, using Miele Professional’s decades of experience in the field. The seminar aims to give architects a deeper understanding of the implications of regulations that need to be considered in a care home; the machines and services required; and offers best practice examples of room size and layout. It also covers environmentally friendly solutions, and ideas for future proofing the laundry room, something that Miele is a particular specialist in due to developing its range of energy-efficient machines for care homes. The presentation gives background on the care home market and the very specific requirements of this area, before moving on to design considerations. The material marks the first time that Miele Professional has moved into developing CPDs and is the first in a line of seminars being created for different commercial environments. PROVIDING SOLUTIONS

Architects and designers could be exposing their clients to risk of breaking the law if they do not include a specific type of accessible toilet in new build or refurbishment projects. Under the Equality Act, which replaced the Disability Discrimination Act, service providers are required to make reasonable changes, including to the built environment, where a disabled customer or potential customer would otherwise be at a substantial disadvantage. To help architects and facilities managers get their accessible toilets right, and meet Changing Places campaigners needs, leading disabled toilet solutions company Clos-o-Mat has developed the most comprehensive and a unique ‘one-stop shop’ solution. In-house, the company can provide design advice, then supply all the equipment, if necessary install and commission it, and subsequently service and maintain it. Full project management can also be provided. This is reinforced with support services including 2D and 3D CAD drawings, and sector-specific advisory white papers available for free on its website. www.clos-o-mat.com

TWO NEW FACED

This year has been an exciting year for Urban Front, not only is it 10 years since Urban Front started on their remarkable journey making their distinctive doors, but they have just launched two new designs, the Quattro and Milano V. Continuing their #ThinkBig campaign, Urban Front's new design, Quattro, is shown here as an oversized pivot door in Iroko, 1.5m wide with a bronze handle. Urban Front says, "Large doors on pivot seem to grow in popularity eliminating the need for double doors and increasing the wow factor of entrances regardless of the design of the house". The Milano V is a vertical boarded door that has a special feature of a hidden handle, finished here in a dark urban grey on European Oak. Used internally, the Milano V has a simple design that is not only elegant, but also easy to blend into living areas. 01494 778787 | www.urbanfront.co.uk

FROM THE ABYSS

International designers Laetitia de Allegri and Matteo Fogale joined forces with leading British tile manufacturer Johnson Tiles to produce an immersive installation for the London Design Festival. Taken from the French term that means ‘placed in the abyss’, ‘Mise-en-abyme’, the piece was produced using bespoke floor tiling from Johnson Tiles, handcrafted to change in colour by three per cent from tile to tile and create a gradient effect, teamed with huge transparent acrylic shapes that visitors walk through. The resulting effect is a changing sense of perspective when travelling from one end of the bridge to the other. Darren Clanford, Creative Director at Johnson Tiles, said: “It’s very important to us to support new creative talent for the London Design Festival and our collaboration with Laetitia and Matteo was our most ambitious piece yet. We relished the opportunity to produce a new and bespoke tile design that would make their ideas a reality.” www.johnson-tiles.com

THE MIGHTY STEAM ENGINEERED FRAME

The American Hardwood Export Council presented four projects at 100% Design as part of the London Design Festival 2015. The Invisible Store of Happiness, a celebration of wood and craftsmanship in the form of a three-metre high wooden sculpture made out of American maple and cherry, was showcased alongside three pieces from The Wish List project that AHEC presented at the Victoria & Albert Museum during London Design Festival 2014. Getting Away From It All, A Stool for the Kitchen and Ve-sel were all on show. The Invisible Store of Happiness was shown at Clerkenwell Design Week 2015 and brought together two of the UK’s brightest talents, furniture designer-maker Sebastian Cox and sculptor Laura Ellen Bacon. The structure consists of a mighty steam bent frame that gives way to thinner, weave-able strips manipulated to twist and flow into a whirlpool of texture and shape. Sebastian Cox conceived the project and led by his growing passion for Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), took it to AHEC as a proposal. He asked Laura Ellen Bacon, whose poetic willow sculptures he has always admired, to join him for the project. www.americanhardwood.org | Image courtesy of Petr Krejci Photography

CUSTOM SCREENING

Following a £9 million refurbishment project, the Merrion Centre multi- storey car park, Leeds, has been dramatically revamped, including a custom screening solution from Levolux. The solution incorporates rectangular-section Fins, arranged in a ‘diagrid’ pattern and horizontal aerofoil-shaped Fins. The unusual ‘diagrid’ arrangement of rectangular- shaped aluminium Fins, each measuring 200mm wide by 100mm deep, extends to screen an area with a combined length of almost 160 metres and a height of up to 11.5 metres. The lattice work assembly of Fins is fixed between vertical steel supports at five metre centres, creating a series of bays that continue along north, east and south elevations. The Fins are illuminated at night, thanks to the incorporation of colourful LED lights that are fixed where the Fins interconnect. While the ‘diagrid’ screen is relatively open to maximise daylight levels on each floor and allow good outward visibility for occupants, an alternative screening arrangement was required to obscure unsightly entrance and exit rampways and service areas. In these areas, Levolux utilised its innovative Infiniti Fin system to incorporate 200mm wide aerofoil-shaped Fins, arranged horizontally to form a series of vertical stacks. www.levolux.com

D-FENDING THE CHAMPERS

The new Moet Pavilion and Roof Terrace at York Racecourse is not only opulently stylish for the enjoyment of race goers but with the help of Yeoman Shield’s new Mini D-Fender, the back of house areas are also keeping up appearances. The Moet Pavilion is a very popular and well-used meeting point on race days. 200 metres of Yeoman Shield’s new Mini D-fender has been fitted to protect the pavilion’s cellar and storage areas from damage which can be caused by the passage of heavy trolleys, equipment and objects through the area. Installed to the walls at mid and low level for maximum protection, by Yeoman Shield’s directly employed fixing operatives, the Mini D-fender was complemented by the addition of MD75 rubber corner protection angles to corners also vulnerable to damage. The installation of the Yeoman Shield rubber Mini D Fender and MD 75 Corner Protection Angles will contribute to keeping the busy back of house areas looking smart and damage free for some time to come with the additional benefit of being easily cleaned. 0113 279 5854 | [email protected] | www.yeomanshield.com

BALMY CLIMATES FOR BOMBAY SAPPHIRE

Bombay Sapphire recently commissioned the creation of the company's first in- house production facility at an old Victorian paper mill in Laverstoke, Hampshire, on a 20,000sqm rural property. The abandoned 18th century paper mill's original brick buildings were converted into the distillery and a pair of phenomenal curved glass greenhouses were added to house the 10 tropical and Mediterranean botanicals used to create the world famous gin. The centrepiece of the award-winning distillery is the amazing greenhouse. It is made up of two glasshouses, which extend from the distillery, using recycled air from the distillation process to maintain a warm climate within. The glasshouses take full advantage of advances in glass technology, including EnduroShield's easy clean nanotechnology. EnduroShield easy clean surface treatment for glass was applied in factory prior to installation into the swooping glasshouse structures. EnduroShield chemically bonds to the glass substrate, transforming it into a high performance hydrophobic surface, which will protect against staining, and reduce the effort and frequency of maintenance, water and contaminants bead right off. London’s newest boutique hotel Laslett hotel looks to capture the rich cultural heritage and local contemporary scene of Notting Hill within the design of the hotel, making the ground floor more of a neighbourhood hangout than a traditional hotel lobby. It incorporates a curated British library, walls of art, the Henderson bar and coffee which serves an evolving menu of dishes supplied by celebrated local chef Sally Clarke and her Bakery, and a shop showcasing collaborations with designers and artists. Larger hotel chains like the Best Western have launched a new boutique brand called Vib, short for Vibrant, which include contemporary and modern design, local design elements from the location of the hotel, large creative spaces, personalised food and beverage options, green-friendly features and vending machines where customers can purchase a variety of amenities including apple headphones. “This was a natural evolution for us. Even the traditional no-frills hostel market is getting a makeover with brands. For example Freehand Hotel, which offers tourists the opportunity to mix with locals in the lobby, plush couches with coffee and handcrafted tiles lining the walls. European hostel brand Generation Hostels has also created lavish common areas with fantastic bars, cinema rooms and areas for yoga in their 10 ‘poshtels’. “We’re trying to capture people who are curious and people who want to experience design and want to experience something local,” said Josh White, Chief Strategic Officer.

HEATING THE ESTATE

Kirtling Towers, the remains of a Grade I 16th Century Tudor house, has recently received its first two installations of Windhager biomass heating systems. The estate made the decision to convert to biomass as an economical and more sustainable alternative to its previous oil heating system. As a result, two separate Windhager biomass district heating systems, each comprising an 180kW BioWIN Excel Kaskade system were installed by local installers, Acorn Renewable Solutions. They are currently underway with phase three of the project with an expected completion by the winter. The two Windhager 180kW biomass systems were installed by Acorn Renewable Solutions as an efficient and environmentally friendly replacement for the estate’s old oil boilers. The automatic feed and backup system of the BioWIN Excel boilers provide the estate with a constant and reliable heat source all year round, without the need for regular maintenance visits. The installation qualifies for the Government’s Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI), which will reward the Fairhaven Estate with £35,000 per year in return payments from the scheme over 20 years. 01225 892211 | [email protected] | www.windhager.co.uk

A MINIMAL DIMENSION

Brio has added to its wide range of hardware for straight sliding doors with two interior Zero Clearance Glass options. Brio recognised that architects had an urgent need for an architectural hardware system that would enable glass panels to bring a new dimension to minimalism, and developed the Zero Clearance Glass system with a virtually invisible 2.5mm clearance between glazing rail and track. The clean lines achieved by the concealed hardware and low profile glazing rail allow the panel to appear as if suspended between floor and ceiling. Brio’s Single Run Zero Clearance Glass hardware makes floor to ceiling installations more streamlined and ultimately compatible with today’s uncluttered minimalist interiors. Single Run Zero Clearance Glass hardware allows an infinitesimal gap – 2.5mmm - between the glass panel and the hardware, enabling a pleasing aesthetic finish to floor to ceiling installations. The use of glass panels brings a new dimension to minimalism with the clean lines achieved by the concealed hardware and low profile glazing rail causing the panel to appear to be suspended between floors and ceiling. www.briouk.com

INTO THE SMÅLAND WOODLANDS

Kährs has introduced a new collection of ten rustic oak wood floors. Part of Kährs Supreme Range, the Småland Collection features a dynamic timber surface with a unique composition of knots, graining and cracks. Its very rustic, undulating appearance is complemented with a range of surfaces treatments, which create a multi-faceted surface. Kährs Småland Collection is suitable for contract and residential environments and features a multi- layered construction, which can be installed over underfloor heating. All floors within the new range are made in Småland, Sweden; within the Småland forest region where Kährs was founded in 1857. The designs have a one-strip ‘plank’ format enhanced by a bevelled edge along all four sides. Colour tones range from light beige/grey Oak Vista, to deep toned Tveta, which is smoked to give a brown/black hue. Surface treatments include brushing, handscraping, sawing, staining and smoking, and all designs have an oiled prefinish. The new designs are crafted from sustainable oak, sourced from the Småland woodlands, and have a multi-layered construction for optimum stability. 023 9245 3045 | [email protected] | kahrs.com

REFLECTING GOOD ROOFING

The devastating storm surge that hit the east coast two years ago damaged many properties up and down the country. Dunes Amusements in Cromer, Norfolk, was one of the businesses destroyed by the surge and worked with Norfolk Pro Build, Gray and Jarrett and Sika Sarnafil to repair the damage in order to open to the public once again. The project was one of the first in the country to use Sika Sarnafil’s new Self Adhered roofing membrane. Gray and Jarrett undertook the roofing portion of the project, firstly removing the existing strawboard decking down to the steel frame and replacing with a steel corrugated deck. Applying a Sarnavap 500E as the vapour control layer, followed by new insulation, they then installed the Sika Sarnafil Self Adhered Membrane, G410-15EL FSA in light grey. The membrane gave a smooth, sleek finish to the roof, a specification requirement of architects, Canham Consulting, as people would be looking down on the roof from the town above. 01707 394444 | [email protected] | www.sarnafil.co.uk
