The Cloze procedure, which researchhas shown to provide a valid measure of reading achievement,requires language production skills and readingstrategies not yet available to elementaryschsol English-Second-Language(ESL) pupils who are not literate in theirvernacular. A modified Cloze procedure, designed toovercome this problem, was found to have high concurrentvalidity with traditional vocabulary and readingmeasures.
