trumpeter Terence Blanchard has become a most prominent brass player, bandleader, recording artist,

orchestrator of film scores, and leader in the mainstream post-bop community. Blanchard is the Fred A. & Barbara M. Erb Jazz Creative Chair at the

Detroit Symphony Orchestra and a visiting scholar at . He has served as the artistic director of the Thelonious Monk Jazz Institute as USC

in Los Angeles and of the Henry Mancini Institute at the University of Miami Frost School of Music. He has cut dozens of albums on major labels including Columbia, Sony Classical, and Blue Note — and the awards can do the talking, as he has been nominated for thirteen Grammys and has won five. He has played with virtually every major figure in every corner of jazz, including (but not at all limited to) , McCoy Tyner, Toots Thielemans, Dr. John, , , and . As a performer and composer, Blanchard’s individuality can be heard in director ’s films; Emmy winner Anthony Hemingway’s Red Tails; his opera ; an upcoming Fox drama; a dance collaboration with Desmond Richardson’s Complexions; two commissions for the Detroit Symphony Orchestra and the Los Angeles Philharmonic; and two Broadway plays.

Mark Stryker is a cultural journalist and critic with 27 years of experience working in daily newspapers. From 1995-2016 he was an arts reporter and critic at the Fred A. and Barbara M. Detroit Free Press covering classical music, jazz, visual arts and cultural news. He has won numerous national awards for reporting and criticism on subjects ranging Erb Family Foundation from the City of Detroit bankruptcy and Detroit Institute of Arts, to classical composer Elliott Carter and jazz bassist Ron Carter. Stryker's first book, "Made in Detroit: Jazz From the Motor City," will be published in 2018 by the University of Michigan Press. He is also a recipient of a 2012 Kresge Artist Fellowship for his writing about jazz. A native of Bloomington, Ind., Stryker earned a bachelor’s A Celebration of Jazz in Detroit degree in American history from the University of Illinois and a master’s degree in journalism from Indiana University.
